It's official, the National Geographic Society has identified Sunset Beach, in Brunswick County, NC, one of the World's Best Beaches.

Check it out @ http://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/top-10/top-beaches-world/

If you're looking for a quiet, family oriented beach, stop looking--you just found it! Sunset Beach is a quiet, barrier island with the widest beach strand in the state. It's a bike and pedestrian friendly community with little commercial development.

The home is approximately 400 ft from the dunes; an elevated boardwalk then leads you over the protected dunes directly to the beach strand.

The Holy Mackerel has 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths. The home is designed with 2 bedrooms and 1 bath on each side of the home with the living/dining area and kitchen in the center. Each side has a privacy door separating it from the center living area. This arrangement is ideal for two families.

Each bedroom is equipped with cable TV and DVD/Blue Ray player. Bedrooms 1 and 2 have a queen bed and bedrooms 3 and 4 have two twin beds in each bedroom. The queen mattress sets are new for 2015.

The kitchen has been recently updated with all new stainless steel appliances. The new stove features a convection oven with glass cook-top. The dining table seats 8.

The home is elevated and offers 2 bays of covered parking. Additional parking is available in the driveway. A laundry area with washer and dryer is located on the ground level.

An outside shower with hot and cold water is located under the home and a cold water, basin sink is adjacent to wash out sandy bathing suits.

A generous sized, heavy wooden picnic table is on the concrete slab under the home with an outside grill just steps away.

Bed and bath linens are not furnished. Rental linens are available thru a local independent business. Ask for their contact information.

About Tom Freeman

Hi, we are the Freeman family; Becky and Tom, owners of The Holy Mackerel. We have two adult sons (Jacob and Luke) with families. Thank you for visiting our site and considering our home for your vacation destination. Our goal is to provide you and your family a safe, comfortable home at a competitive price.

While growing up in NC my family frequently visited our state's coastline. As a young boy I grew to love the beach and the marine environment.

Upon marriage Becky and I set as our goal to one day own a home at the beach. In 1987 we found our home and have been working on it ever since to to make it the best we could.

Tom Freeman purchased this house in 1987

Why Tom Freeman chose Southern Coast

As a native I had seen many changes to our beaches as a result of aggressive development. Sunset Beach was different. Among all the North Carolina beaches I had visited, none had the same 'feel' as Sunset Beach. We found it to be a quiet, family oriented beach with little commercial development.

Back in the day Sunset Beach was accessed by a single lane, floating bridge that spanned the Inter Coastal Waterway. The island is now accessible via a safe, two lane high rise bridge that is always in service. I've heard it said many times that as soon as you cross that bridge everything changes.

Becky and I invite you to see if Sunset Beach has a similar effect on you.

One Happy Family!

  • 4 of 5

This has been our third year renting this house and we can't say enough good things about the owners. They are absolutely fantastic to work with! This house is perfect for 2 families because each one has their own side with their own bathroom. The kitchen is fully stocked. The only down side we experienced this time is the floors were a little dirty when we got there.

Nice spacious cottage

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay. We are a family of five so the layout was great for each child to have their own room. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils, pots and pans, etc. We had everything we needed. The front porch is a wonderful spot for a morning cup of coffee. The outdoor shower with rain head and handheld head is great.

Phenomenal outdoor shower and front porch

  • 4 of 5

We had 5 adults and 2 children. There was plenty of room! The space worked really well for socializing / dinners and were able to put kids to sleep and still socialize easily. The front porch faces West and therefore is cool and shaded for a majority of the day. I spent much of my time on the porch in the rocking chairs. There were some books left that left several of us with reading options. The outdoor shower was perfect with a changing area and then the shower beyond that with 3 separate heads and HOT water! The indoor bathrooms were dated but it didn't matter since we really only used the outdoor shower. The beach access is directly at the end of 32nd street. There were 7 houses between beach access and this house. It took 8 minutes to walk from house to "campsite" on beach with a 4 year old. There are no tents allowed before 27th street but they are allowed at 32nd. The house is a perfect location on the beach....far enough from the main beach entrance and close to Bird Island sanctuary. The beach is shallow for around 100 yards before gets deep so good for kids. There were enough waves to boogie board and space for biking and soccer playing. There is a picnic table and grill underneath the house. The clothes washer and dryer were front load and very nice. The house has nice stainless steel dishwasher/stove/fridge as well. We knew to bring towels and sheets but didn't think to bring dish towels /washcloths... so that is something to remember. There were lots of kitchen appliances and supplies ,however, we routinely ran out of forks so recommend bringing some plastic forks if several people in the house. The clothes lines below were very helpful. Food Lion is only 8 minutes away in car. All in all we had a very relaxing and good experience. No complaints. The island itself has 1 bike shop, 2 clothes shops, and 1 ice cream place so it is not commercialized at all, which our family really appreciated. It is a safe island in general and safe for bike rides.

Owner's Response: Thank you for that detailed review. Glad you enjoyed the outdoor shower. We had been wanting to re-do it and based on our positive comments from our guests I think it is a success. My wife thought I was crazy to put metal roofing on the sides. She thinks it's pretty cool now. We really appreciate your time to provide comments.

Nice, quiet, safe feeling neighborhood. House is only a short walk from the beach. Very clean. Kitchen utensils were nice and orderly. Nice big dining table. Comfortable beds and plenty of room for 6-8 people.

This is a nice, quiet, comfortable early April beach vacation.

The area is home to numerous world class golf courses. For the outdoorsman, in-shore and off-shore fishing charters are available from Ocean Isle Beach, Calabash and North Myrtle Beach. Local parks offering play equipment, tennis courts, ball fields and open areas are a short drive away. A paved, public boat ramp is located on the mainland by the new high rise bridge. The ramp launches directly into the Inter Coastal Waterway.

Rental companies on the island offer sea kayaks, bicycles, beach chairs, beach umbrellas, and other beach related items.

By far the best amenity is the the beautiful, natural beach strand. Due to several natural factors, Sunset Beach actually grows in width each year. Scenic walks on the beach there are unmatched anywhere.
