The studio is completely private with two entrances. There is no access to the main house from inside the studio. All entrances are covered along with parking on property. The studio has inside and outside dining with a covered patio, BBQ and garden, all completely private, surrounded by a 10ft hedge.

What makes this studio unique

Located on the North Shore of Kauai, one minutes walk by access path to the beach near the famed Tunnels, where Sea Turtles become apart of your experience in clear waters known for snorkeling.

HaleHanu is 2 miles South of Ke'e Beach, the start of the Kalalau Trail and Na Pali Coastline, and 1 mile North of Lumahai Beach where South Pacific was filmed. Hanalei is 7 miles South.

Definitely off the beaten track

  • 3 of 5

We stayed in Haena for 5 nights. This was good value compared to other rental properties on the north coast. However, we had stayed in a beautiful cottage in the ranchlands area near Wailua before heading north, which was far less expensive, spotlessly clean and more central to everything on Kauai. Next time, we would choose it over this property. Be prepared for a very long drive to the north shore, but convenient if you plan to do a lot of activities in the north - Ke'e Beach, Haena Beach, Tunnels Beach, Na'pali Coast Trail. Buy your food in Kapa'a or Lihue, as prices go up as you head north. Compared to other VRBO rentals we have used in other places in Hawaii, this property was a bit dated. Definitely quiet during the day, but there is no A/C, so windows stay open for a breeze, and you get to listen to squabbles and choice language from neighbours nearby at night. Home was tidy. Sheets and towels provided, and a shared laundry area. Beach is walking distance, as other reviews have indicated, but we were there in July, and there are no turtles in the area at this time of year. Great snorkelling at Tunnels Beach which is not too far of a walk, and we were lucky enough to spot Monk Seals on the beach near the property. The beach that is walking distance (5 minutes or less) was not swimmable while we were there. Water was very rough, this may have been due to some unsettled weather. If you are someone who is squeamish about insects, this property is NOT for you, and you may want to look for something that is not on a ground floor. We have travelled and lived in tropical locations, so are used to things like sugar ants and cockroaches and were not bothered by these things. They come with the territory, and are not a reflection of the cleanliness of the home. However, we were not at all prepared for the 5 inch (yes, 5, it was as long as a ball point pen) centipede on our floor mat one morning. These are very difficult to kill, and while not deadly, can cause a painful sting that lasts for days. Just be sure to look before stepping out of bed! We usually left early in the morning and came home early evening, and wished there had been some motion lights or other lighting in the driveway/entrance area. You have to walk through a cluttered garage (not shown in the listing) to get to the entrance, and it is pitch black at night. No amenities within walking distance, but short drive to Hanalei for shops. Friendly, quiet owners.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. Yes, the studio is dated, but it's meant to be 50's Hawaiian as the photos portray, it's intentional. There are fewer vacation rentals on the N Shore than anywhere else on Kauai because it's less populated due to the terrain. This fact makes for higher rates, but we have kept ours low. People come to the N Shore to get off the beaten track, so thanks for that. The studio was due to be fogged after you left. We have to wait for a span of at least 5 nights of vacancy before we can use foggers, as it's a big job removing all dishes, cookware, and literally everything out of the cupboards as we provide coffee, teas, rice, olive oil and many other stables that would cost a guest a nice dinner out. I am sorry for the encounter w/a centipede, a rare occurrence. As you had mentioned in your review there was a lot of weather, meaning rain, driving rain. Before your visit we had done extensive yard work including trimming back the large orange tree in front of the studio, these two factors resulted in bugs of all kinds relocating in unexpected ways. We are literally a minutes walk from the beach and yes a short walk to areas that are great for swimming in either direction you go. You are right about all the beaches that are close, like Tunnels, etc, but please know you were not lucky so see a Monk Seal, they're there every morning. At least one comes in if not two, and they are not the same ones as they travel, they come in out of necessity and have for generations. As for the "cluttered" garage, I'm sure yours is pristine, however, like most families we work, and the garage reflects that of a working Stone and Tile Mason. Vacation rentals are often in peoples homes where they live. Here on the N Shore no one has AC, we don't need it. This summer (as most people know), is the hottest on record, normally we do not get over 78 degrees, but this summer we've been in the high 80's at times. Our guests have come here to get away from the real heat of the Mainland, where it's been in the 100's. We're fortunate to live here, to wake up here, to know we are here. That's lucky. We're also happy to share what we have with our guests, a third of which are repeat guests. One look at out calendar will tell that story. I believe had you taken the time to respond to my requests, asking how you were doing, we could have helped, Aloha, Lesley

The location is quaint and positioned perfectly.

  • 4 of 5

Located past most of the 1 lane bridges going north, it is an easy and quick drive to Ke'e Beach and the beautiful Kalalau Trail. Also a quick walk to the beach and up to Turtle Beach for great snorkeling.

Lesley had plenty of snorkels, fins, bug spray, chairs, cooler... to allow for a great day at the beach.

Easy access to restaurants in Hanalei and groceries in Princeville.

We had a great week there.

Great place for quiet relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Studio is perfect for two people who want to enjoy the north shore but still have some home comforts. Laundry and kitchen were really helpful, bed was comfortable. Lesley was super nice as a host, really felt like we were welcomed there.

Beautiful if not somewhat remote

  • 4 of 5

The studio was a lovely place to stay. Lesley was very accommodating and helpful in answering our questions leading up to and during the trip. The main downside, which is more our fault for not realizing, is just how much driving would be entailed by staying this far along the North Shore and accessing activities and destinations elsewhere on the island. Even though it's just a few miles to Hanalei, I think it took 15-20 minutes just to drive just that section to Hanalei, due the narrow curvy roads and one-way bridges. But of course the situation was reversed the day we hiked the Napali Coast; everyone else had to drive a long ways and we were only 2 miles down the road!

Simply wonderful!!

  • 5 of 5

We had the best time at this rental! The pots and pans, the refrigerator, the comfortable bed, were all better than we have at home! Simple and enjoyable access to YMCA beach and Tunnels! Great shower and lots of free perks like French Press coffee maker, and extras like beach chairs, umbrella, snorkel gear, etc We would love to come back and see Pickles( the cat), Snoopy (the dog), Martha, Chuey, and Lesley the hosts!!!. Loved the free washing machine too! Don't miss the sunset at Ke'e Beach on the Napali coast, and also the Limahuli Gardens! Be sure to get a massage at the Hanalei Spa at the Colony resort!

Owner's Response: This April marks 3 successful and wonderful years of hosting guests from all over the U.S. and the world. We have now had many return guests that have come back year after year, and hope you will become a part of our growing family. We're constantly updating and improving whatever we can in the studio and patio garden to make your experience here a comfortable and positive one. Hosting has been a positive experience for us in turn, we hope to see you again as well. Lots of Aloha, Lesley, host

Mahalo HaleHanu!

  • 5 of 5

This rental studio was a perfect match for my husband and I. We loved being able to take a short walk to the sandy beaches and take long walks around the neighborhood. The studio itself offers a great full kitchen for cooking meals, a comfortable bed, 2 private entrances, and a nice private back porch looking into fantastic tropical foliage with an orange and lemon tree too. Beach amenities are provide: a beach umbrella, chairs, mini coolers. We had access to a shared washer/dryer which was great to use during our 2 week stay. The studio has tall ceilings and 2 ceiling fans which kept the air flowing even on hot days to keep us cool. The short drive to and from Hanalei and other nearby towns is beautiful and we never tired of it. The location was great for us to explore the north shore area and spend time at Tunnels Beach and the Napali Coast. The studio is in great shape and decorated nicely. We woke every morning to the beautiful sounds of local birds. We would definitely come back to this studio for future Kauai trips!

The home is set away from the road with the studio on the back side of the house, giving it privacy. There is a 10 foot hedge surrounding the entire property with exception of the driveway. The beach access path runs along the property on the other side of the hedge with the beach one minutes walk away. There is a wide beach area with reef. For good snorkeling, you may walk in either direction for one minute or less for many bays, including Tunnels further up about 10 minutes walk. The Trail Head is 2 miles up the road as well, where Ke'ee beach is, go early and take our walking sticks with you.
