Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 2

Urbana is the perfect get away, right in the middle of it all. It’s located in the heart of San Diego's most thriving cultural, business and leisure districts but when you step inside the gate, you leave it all behind. The house was built in 1889 and charms visitors with original architecture that’s been completely re-imagined and designed to accommodate guests with a taste for modern amenities and a contemporary aesthetic.

When you come to the flat from a day exploring the beaches, parks, and charming districts of San Diego, you step into an adult playground all your own. Use the gas BBQ and outdoor dining table while you enjoy the lush landscapes, raised bed gardens, bamboo fences and curving hard-scapes around you. Dine on the patio as you watch the sun set over downtown San Diego's skyline. Look down into the garden for a more secluded, peaceful view.

The kitchen offers everything you need with fully stocked cookware, new stainless steel appliances, BBQ tools, dish and glassware, silverware, a full set of chef’s cookware, graters, strainers, steamers and much more. The television and iPod doc are both there to entertain you while you whip up culinary creations as well.

The living space offers a flat screen smart TV, Wifi, Blu-ray player, board games and books to help you unwind and let your mind play.

Use it as a work, sleep or play space. It has full bed with luxurious bedding to lounge on during the day and sleep comfortably at the end of your day's adventures. A custom designed and built floating shelf holds the Blu-ray player and IHome speaker/charger/alarm clock. Lounge and read a book or catch up on emails under the reading lamp in a playfully buttoned designer sitting chair.

The bathroom has been completely remodeled with shower and fixtures. All linens, toilet paper and paper towels included.

Use the two person dining table at meals, and convert it to a work-desk when you need to. When the weather is nice (95% of the time in San Diego!) enjoy the outdoor sitting table and BBQ.

The studio has black out blinds, double paned windows that shut out the city sounds, high ceilings, hardwood floors, a ceiling fan, heater, AC and all new cabinetry, tile, and fixtures. We love staying here, and hope you will too!

The studio also has soundproofed double doors that can be opened up to a neighboring rental. If you're interested in a larger space, or in vacationing with another couple or with kids, this a great way to share lodging with the option of privacy. Please let us know if you're interested in a double studio stay!

About Marie

Our family has lived in Ramona since the 1960s, and works to refurbish homes in San Diego, hoping to breath new life into their communities. We worked together to transform this 1889 historic home into a contemporary playground for vacationers and a respite for business people. Rob is a green designer and builder who has innovated energy efficient homes in San Diego for 40 years. Deborah, his wife, has worked to design the landscape, raised bed gardens, and hard-scapes surrounding the house. I worked together with my parents to design the interiors, furnish the cottage, and make prints of my original paintings for the interiors. I have a masters degree in painting and lived in the bay area for the past ten years working with kids.

We're a family of four generations of San Diego musicians, builders and artists who hope to host visitors and show them the best of what our home town has to offer. We love to travel, meet new people, and create. We hope that this flat feels like home to you.

Perfect place to crash for a few days

  • 5 of 5

I loved this place, it is small but it has everything you need for a long weekend. It is within walking distance of just about everything downtown, including the start and finish lines of the race I ran! The owner made sure everything was tidy and ready to go, check in was a snap, so was checkout. My damage deposit was refunded in a timely manner, overall a great place to stay, I would go back!

Lovely place in a great location

  • 5 of 5

The place is small but perfect for a short stay in San Diego for the weekend. Little Italy offers so much for restaurants and night life all a short walk from the apartment.

OK for two

  • 2 of 5

While the walk to little Italy was easy it was 'down hill' , It's a steep walk all the way back.

If you are under 50 and need the exercise the up hill walk back might be good for you.

It was not for my wife and I at eighty with a replaced hip.

This is a one person or two person at best. The two units upstairs #3 and #4 are small and tight, about 30 steps in total from the front gate 'UP'. The bed is pushed into a corner, so one side of the bed is against the wall, meaning that one person has to crawl into and out over the foot of the bed. (Night trips are a little more cumbersome).

You will hear the flights of airplanes as you are almost directly under the flight path and the freeway traffic that is very close by is 'NOISY' 24/7

The appliances were most satisfactory and the little appointments here and there added to good atmosphere that were tastefully chosen. cutlery and utensils were good quality and appreciated.

While it was stipulated that 'no smoking' in or on the property was not permitted, that did not deter those in unit #4 who smoked outside all hours (2 am) when their smoke wafted into our unit. Like so was the occupants on the lower unit who sat at the table smoking with the smell drifting up to our unit.

While I do not, as many would not, appreciate notes of do's and don'ts plastered on the walls etc. it would be of help to remind smokers with a note on the table, inside and outside tables, that no smoking in the units or on the property is allowed. As non-smokers it was very annoying, especially when we had to get up at 2AM to close the windows.

As Canadians, it worked out to $1,100.00 for 8 nights. pricey when we could have obtained beach accommodation for less.

Over all, we enjoyed our stay in San Diego.

Owner's Response: We are sorry you didn't enjoy your experience. Certainly, if we were notified about of the smoking ,or any other issue you found problematic, we would have addressed it immediately as we do have a strict No Smoking policy on the property. We do post as many photos as possible to make sure that the space is not misrepresented in any way. I believe the square footage is listed in the details as well. I can't speak to the exchange rate, but it sounds like the $1,100 probably includes the $500 refundable security deposit as the rate during April is less than $100 per night.

Lovely In Almost Every Way

  • 4 of 5

The studio flat is very tastefully decorated and a very pleasant set-up. Almost everything is as it should be. Exceptions: 1) *pillows on the bed need immediate replacing 2) we did not receive any service when, on arrival, we made it known that the television was not working. It was still not working when we checked out 4 days later. This put a negative note on what could have been a much better experience.

A true oasis in the city

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 nights at Urbana Studio and were overall very happy. It is very small but well equipped with all anyone would need for a short stay. There was a small closet but no other drawers or storage place. It was delightful to sit outside for coffee, breakfast, and evening drinks. We did not make use of the BBQ, but it was a nice option. If you are not used to urban noise, do plan to wear ear plugs--the studio is on the flight path and there is freeway noise.

The studio is located in a rather eclectic neighborhood of scattered Victorian homes, low-rise apartments (older and newer), and office buildings but there is no real commerce or retail in the area. It is within walking distance of Little Italy and Balboa Park; we had hoped to not rent a car, but found it was easier to visit the surrounding San Diego neighborhoods with a car. Be aware if you do have a car--there are parking restrictions near the studio that are not well posted and do restrict parking for street cleaning (we did not see the sign and received a parking ticket).

All in all, we were very happy with the studio. However, next time I would see if one of the other larger units on site would be available, especially for longer stays.

Here you can stroll through coffee shops, boutiques, bars and some of the most unique specialty shops and restaurants San Diego has to offer. Walk three blocks in the opposite direction to reach Balboa Park, the Old Globe theater, art museums and the famous Prado restaurant.

To the south, it is just minutes to the Convention Center, Gas Lamp District, and Petco Park. To the north, visitors can get lost in the architecture along Banker’s Hill and in Hillcrest daytime boutiques and buzzing nightlife.
