Sitting atop Banker's Hill, perhaps the most historic and romantic of San Diego's neighborhoods, is the Sherman Doig House (SDhouse). Built in 1887, this historic privately owned Victorian home is now available for overnight stays and offers the intimacy of a bed and breakfast in the center of 'Americas Finest City'.
The rooms are charming and eclectic. The neighborhood is delightful and centrally located.

As vrbo listers since 2007, we have had dozens of satisfied travelers stay in our original listing located nearby in Coronado. We purchased this magnificent historic Victorian home in 2013 and have completed some minor cosmetic modifications to accommodate those looking for a unique vacation rental.
Cassandra Stroud purchased this house in 2013
The home is currently under stewardship of the trustee of the Bertha Stroud Family Trust and was purchased not only to establish a legacy estate for the heirs of the trust, but to share this historic landmark with locals and visitors to San Diego. This property was chosen because, just like the namesake of the trust, it is eclectic, whimsical, and possesses a unconventional character that can best be described as eccentrically unique.
For travelers looking for the charm of a bed and breakfast, but prefer the privacy of a vacation rental with the ability to make their own meals - this home is a perfect choice.
(6) fanatical baseball buddies coming to SD to watch the STL Cardinals!! The house was perfect for us. Plenty of room to spread out, good food in the area, and a friendly owner. :)
House was very well located, parking was no problem, the house was very clean and interesting decor to wander through...plenty of room for all six of house...would recommend for longer stays too...Charlotte was very knowledgeable and accommodating
The Mothers of the parents-to-be gave a surprise Victorian baby shower in this wonderful old home. The ambiance was a perfect setting for the era, and the ladies enjoyed trying on the hats hanging in the hallway. Parking was not a problem for the guests. The owner was gracious and helped set up the rooms with chairs and other items that we needed, and the staff was wonderful in anticipating our needs. A memorable event to be remembered by all. I would definitely recommend this house to others for an event or overnight stay.
We had 13 extended family members sharing the house while in town for a wedding. The house was perfect for our needs: roomy gathering place for breakfasts and chats, comfortable bedrooms and convenient baths, close to the India Street restaurants in Little Italy. The owner was pleasant and did everything possible to make our stay enjoyable.
A group of us were in San Diego for a conference at the convention center. The property made for an easy and enjoyable walk (just over a mile each way) and was in easy distance of restaurants and other attractions as well. It was as advertised with large rooms and plenty of privacy for 5 of us at a fraction of the cost of a hotel (even of a not so great hotel). The full kitchen was well stocked and everything was in good working order. I'm definitely going to try to stay here again should work or play take me to San Diego with a group
We stayed here for a family reunion. There were 7 of us, two couples and three singles, and we are all retired and aged 65+ so we opted for the first two floors of the four floors available so we wouldn’t have to climb several flights of stairs. The house is a beautiful Victorian filled with unique and colorful antiques and period pieces. The owner has done a wonderful job of making each floor comfortable. She showed us all four floors and the upstairs rooms are lovely too. Floor two housed our two couples, with two private bedrooms, single bathroom, living room and kitchen. We were able to gather as a group in that living area each evening. The three singles in our party were on the bottom floor which can be arranged into 4 separate sleeping areas if needed. There isn’t a kitchen on the first floor, but it is cleverly set up with a sink, cupboard with dishes, toaster oven, coffee press, microwave, refrigerator, and a small sitting area, complete with TV. This floor also has two bathrooms, two showers, and a lovely spa tub, which I used to ease my aching joints at the end of the day. The house is centrally located and after we got the hang of the one-way streets, we were able to get down to the harbor and over to Balboa Park and even the airport within minutes driving. It is certainly possible to walk to many of the restaurants close by, but we opted to drive. Parking is definitely an issue in San Diego, or at least in this area, but there is a parking structure under the park/playground down by the Maritime Museum which gave us a good launching point for our dinners and sightseeing in the harbor area. We appreciated the Wi-Fi access, although reception downstairs was sometimes spotty. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay together in this house and were especially pleased that we happened to be there when all the jacaranda trees were blooming. It was a beautiful vacation and I would definitely recommend this house.
SDhouse is located in the long established neighborhood Park West, an area which also acquired the name 'Bankers Hill' because of its reputation as a home for the affluent.
Bankers Hill is one of San Diego's nicest upscale residential neighborhoods located west of Balboa Park and east of Little Italy. Bankers Hill is best known for some of the grandest homes in San Diego and the incredible hillside view that looks over downtown San Diego and the Pacific Ocean. Banker's Hill has some of the best examples of high end residential architecture that dates back to the late 1800's. Examples of Victorian, Craftsman, Revival, and Emerging Modern homes can be seen throughout the Bankers Hill area. Many of the original mansions that were built here have been restored to their original beauty and some have been converted into professional buildings used by lawyers, doctors, dentists, and small companies.
With views of the Pacific Ocean and Balboa Park, Bankers Hill is home to young professionals who want to live in an urban pedestrian setting. As many homes are actually positioned up on a 'hill' overlooking Downtown, San Diego Bay, Coronado, and the airport, it is common to see people spending their time watching the airplanes landing and the sun setting across the water.
Bankers Hill is an ideal place to go for an afternoon walk. The walk will offer you spectacular views of the city and the intrigue of some of San Diego's finest historic homes. Some of the popular Bankers Hill restaurants include Bertrand at Mr. A's that has amazing views, Busalacci's, Cucina Urbana, The Hob Nob Cafe, and The Bankers Hill Restaurant.
As a result of this idealistic location, the SDhouse is conveniently located to many attractions & amenities.
