Surrounded by protected green space for dozens of acres of rolling hills and woods, the property has a fire pit, a swing set and climber for kids, and lots of space to run around and explore.
A large front porch overlooks the front yard, perfect for enjoying morning coffee or an early evening cocktail. A large screened-in porch faces the back yard, where the barbecue grill generally lives. The large back yard is the perfect place for kids to play and for informal family soccer or football games. Beyond the yard are more woods to explore.
Inside the house, a large den, formal dining room, sun room, and a study contain two decorative fireplaces. The kitchen has a large Viking stove with six burners and two ovens with plenty of room for large dinner parties. The house is furnished with everything you need for your stay, including bed linens, towels, kitchen equipment, cooking staples and basic toiletries.
Six bedrooms occupy the second floor, including four queen beds, along with two rooms with a total of five twin beds. The house comfortably sleeps twelve. Entertainment in the house includes ping pong, foosball and two television sets with DVD players.
The house is close to the Norfolk town center, skiing, the public town pond, a playground, soccer field, tennis courts, four state parks, wineries, Music Mountain and tubing on the Farmington River. In Norfolk, there are restaurants and the famous Infinity Hall, an incredible setting for viewing music and other performances. The Yale Music School holds performances on their beautifully-landscaped grounds at the center of town throughout the summer and the Norfolk public library is an architectural gem with a great kids’ room. A farmers’ market runs from late spring to mid-fall every Saturday. The town of Winsted has lots to offer including go carts, mini-golf, duck pin bowling, batting cages, a free-public skate park, and a dinner movie theater. Scenic towns nearby for great day trips include Great Barrington, Salisbury, Kent and Litchfield.
This setting is perfect for a small retreat or family get-away you will always remember.
My brother's family and ours has been enjoying this house as a relaxing get away for us and our friends. Connecticut natives, we have been amazed at the natural beauty and recreational options offered by the State's quiet corner. The endless activities and scenic areas to discover in and around Norfolk have been one of the great experiences in owning this house.
Robert Cox purchased this house in 2010
With plenty of room to spread out and the perfect balance of country and town, this property provides the ideal sense of quiet countryside with walking and biking access to many areas for entertainment. Feel away from it all without being too far away.
Our family enjoyed being all together in Norfolk in this beautiful old house. We tended to congregate in the well appointed kitchen and family room, but we also enjoyed the lovely bedrooms. The fall color was magnificent, while we were there, and we enjoyed several walks. There were excellent maps and brochures to help us make informed choices. The weather was chilly, but the house was warm and comfortable. We had lots of room to spread out and special places to come together. It was ideal for our family weekend.
If you like big old rambling houses with lots of character this is for you. Many beds, but outside of master bath only one shower. Can get backed up easily. Don't look under beds or along walls, you will find lots of dustballs. Only reason I did this was to find outlets for computer, (Limited number of convenient outlets available in bedrooms.)
This was the PERFECT house for a family getaway.
Drove from NYC and could not have been more pleased. Stayed with 6 adults and 2 children (4-1/2 year old girl, 2 year old boy). Plenty of room for everyone to stretch out and be completely comfortable. Open Kitchen is awesome - the hub of weekend activity. If you are looking for a magical family trip, look no further.
Friday's adventure was discovering how many rooms were in the house. So many bedrooms, bathrooms and any other "nook and cranny" you could want. There was more than enough room for 6 adults and 3 children. Although Saturday was an awful day, the house made our stay a HIT!!! We still walked the trail to the water tower, tried out the zip line, loved the enormous silver maple and used the convenient ladder to climb it. We went to the farmer's market (enjoying hot cocoa and music) then took refuge from the rain at your amazing library. Sunday morning we did a quick hike to Haystack and the tower. We created a new game called FOOTSOCK in your front yard, played hide-and-seek with everyone from age 4 to 72, enjoyed much food and laughter in your kitchen, played a lot of ping pong, board games, decorated sugar pumpkins (left two for you) and celebrated our daughter-in-law's birthday. Thank you for sharing your wonderful home and allowing up to add more great memories for our annual get together.
We and our extended family enjoyed a long weekend in this large and spacious home. Plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms for different family members. Spacious and well equipped kitchen. Back yard for the children. We enjoyed the nearby biking and hiking opportunities as well. Our host was very, very good with communication and emails.
We’ve enjoyed two summertime stays in this spacious and charming home. It’s a wonderful place, designed for children and adults to comfortably share and spread out in multiple indoor and outdoor places. There’s a piano and a ping-pong table, a huge lawn in back with a play set and beautiful flower beds, and enough space to sleep a small army. You are welcomed by a two-person swing on the recently renovated front porch and newly painted exterior. There’s a modern well-equipped chef’s kitchen for your homey entertaining pleasure. We love the area—the historical New England buildings, the natural features, and the culture. From here we’ve been to Norfolk Chamber Music, Music Mountain for both classical and jazz, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, an art opening at the elegant Norfolk Library, and Haystack Mountain State Park for hiking and plein air painting. We’ve enjoyed fresh produce and gardening conversations at weekend farmers’ markets in Norfolk and Winsted. We hope to return again and again.
