About Bruce Callahan

Great Grandson of original owner Edward T. Davis who arrived in the US from Europe in the 1840's from England.

Bruce Callahan purchased this cottage in 1890

Why Bruce Callahan chose Rhode Island

Wayward Cottage property has been part of my family since my Great Grandfather bought the summer cottage and barn as a summer place for his family. The barn was converted to a carriage house prior to WWI. The summer cottage was destroyed by the Hurricane of "38. The carriage house was then made into Wayward Cottage. My family spent summers during my childhood so I know it is a great place for kids. Actually, I have found it a great place to be with family and friends throughout my life. The "Islanders" are friendly and laid back. The Cottage is secluded enough for privacy, but is located near enough to Newport and Narragansett for all the activities historical, beach resort towns can offer.

What makes this cottage unique

The Cottage and grounds have always had a warmth, charm and natural beauty that has the power to both excite and soothe me.

Perfect spot

  • 4 of 5

My husband, my 2-year-old son, and my English bulldog and I spent a lovely week at the cottage in Sept. 2016. The owner was extremely responsive and accommodating. The location is perfect. We went shell-hunting every day on the rocky little beach and enjoyed fresh vegetables from the garden. The home is stocked with everything you may need--fishing gear, games and toys for rainy days, even a baby gate to secure the top of the stairs! My only (small) complaint would be the low water pressure and the teeny shower stall. This was a wonderful spot for relaxing and for a homebase for excursions into Newport. We will hopefully be staying there again this year.

Beautiful spot

  • 5 of 5

We thorouhly enjoyed our vacation. The owner was wonderful and had so many things set up for us when we arrived, right down to toys for the grandkids. The house is rustic and there's history on the walls. the 4 bedrooms were a perfect fit for us, the kids and 3 grandkids. Everyone had their own space. The area is beautiful for a morning walk before the heat set in. The view from up and downstairs porches was gorgeous. Our favorite spot all week was on a great deck the owner built at the end of the yard by the water. Nearly always in shade any time of day. We spent a lot of time there. There are many beautiful places to visit nearby. Don't miss Beavertail Lighthouse. Quick trip to Newport, but we never left Jamestown. Love Jamestown anyway and the Wayward made the stay perfect.

Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Bruce was VERY helpful all year with my endless amounts of questions. He was very accomedating as well. Very peaceful and relaxing. I have a 9 month old and was tied to the house somedays and appreciated the beautiful fews and little critters. Itis older furniture and if you have an over active imagination like myself, you can creep yourself out. But that is how cottages mostly are.

I would highly recommend this place.

Owner's Response: Typo-Nicole means beautiful views, not fews, and she is right. With the the water and waves and sun, moon and stars the wonders of nature abound and delight the senses. Little critters like rabbits, squirrels and birds are plentiful.

A perfect cottage

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our time at Wayward Cottage. It was exactly what we had hoped for but better. The view from the cottage was beautiful. The beds, all very comfortable. The kitchen was great for cooking, all the necessary tools including a garden of herbs to pick from. We had some family and friends come for a few days and there was room for all yet it is a nice comfortable beach cottage feel. We would surely do it again. Thank you Bruce and Linda for sharing such a great property.

Wonderful, wonderful, Wayside

  • 5 of 5

Wayside is a true family cottage with ample room for 10 (and more if you want to bring some sleeping bags).

This home has charm, character, as well as a nice view of Narragansett Bay. Walk to the beach, short ride to town, and easy trip to Newport. From the center of town you can jump on the Newport Ferry and avoid the hassle of parking in Newport. Being able to see the night stars is a bonus that will delight all who come.

Wonderful setting, helpful hosts, indoors just so-so

  • 4 of 5

The "stars": beautiful location -- lovely views of the water from inside and from the deck and lawn; the owner was very accommodating of our odd schedule and very informative about the area; great lawn for playing outdoors; interesting garden and much fun watching the birds and other wildlife (groundhogs, deer, even a skunk); easy access to the waterfront for walks, finding shells, etc.. Jamestown is a nice area with much to do (parks, beach, quaint town) and a short drive to Newport. Traffic is light on the island so we could ride our bikes on the streets with few cars passing by. It's a great vacation area.

The "wishes": The indoors could use some updating. The furniture is quite old. Perhaps some furnishings are there with fond memories of bygone days and ancestors, which is understandable, but to renters it's just old and not very comfortable. A nice new couch etc. would be nice. The pictures on the website were accurate enough; it just felt very dated once we got there. Having only one shower (a small, old one at that) is a challenge. There was a bath tub but that wasn't an ideal option with 6 adults on similar schedules. Again, this was shown on the listing but more fully "appreciated" once there. I wouldn't count on 10 people being there comfortably unless some are happy with "tubbing" instead of showering.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your praise of our hospitality, cottage location by the seashore, views, spacious lawn, wildlife and easy access to local activities and Newport. You are right about the old furniture "with fond meomories". At your suggestion we have started to replace the living room furniture with comfort and utility and mind.
