Historic Waterfront House With Wharf--Rare On-The Water Experience!
About Cathy Clark
We are Vince and Cathy Clark. We live here with our two daughters. Cathy's parents live in the adjacent home on the same piece of property. We intend to travel some over the summer while making our home available to guests.
Cathy Clark purchased this House in 1974
Why Cathy Clark chose Birch Harbor
Cathy's parents bought the place in the early '70's, rescuing it from its sad status as a derelict foreclosure. Having been built in the '40's, the wood structure served as a repair shed for fishermen's nets that were used back in the days when they seined the Gulf of Maine for herring and sardines. The building was full of rotting twine nets, and had been vacant for years. Time had taken its toll. Over the ensuing decades, my family restored the building, refurbished the wharf, brought in water and electricity, and gradually turned it from an eyesore to a summer camp, then to a full-time residence. Because current law forbids building this close the shoreline, there are only a handful of homes in Maine that sit directly over the water as this one does. It is truly one of a kind!

Charm and Character
We love our time at Wonsqueak Harbor House! My kids love fishing off the dock, swimming in the harbor, and walking along the coast climbing the rocks. We love the quaint little town, driving to Schoodic Point, and visiting other little harbors and hidden beaches. The house itself has lots of character - it's like staying at home away from home. Cathy (and Dan) are great hosts!
It's always good to have your clan here, and I'm looking forward to seeing you next time. Dan misses the boys already!
Fabulous house and a wonderful host. The six of us loved our stay.
The house is clean and quite comfortable. We enjoyed time inside and outside and found everything we needed to cook some meals as well as great suggestions about where to go in the area. Highly recommend this Maine experience!
Judy, I'm glad you all enjoyed yourselves. What a remarkable group of women! Luckily for you, none of you stood still enough for long enough for me to do more interrogation so as to find out more about what wonderful things you have been doing out in the world. You are inspirational in reminding me the great value of hanging onto my dear ones though they may be far away. This, after all, is the "good stuff!" Hope you all got home feeling content and energized.
Hard not to love the charm of this place. Spotlessly clean and provided with every amenity you could possibly want. Cathy and her animals made us feel more at home than when we're home!
Great location and beautiful view. Loved being so close to Schoodic point!
TRUE LOVE FOR WONSQUEAK AND CATHY!
TRUE LOVE! That's how we feel about this property which we refer to as Wonsqueak. This is our 5th consecutive year there with our Michigan family. We let our 2 grand children choose where to spend a one week family vacation each year and they continue to choose Wonsqeak. In fact, they say they don't want to go back to Maine if we can't stay there. Now for some details:
the view is amazing---we enjoy the changes in high and low tides. Our two grandkids go in at low tide looking for crabs and sea glass. Sometimes they swim but their blood is warmer than ours; too cold for old retirees like us. The home is charming and we feel at home when we are there with 4 adults, two kids, 1 dog and 1 cat, plenty of room for all. We enjoy just relaxing---morning coffee on the deck---or going out for day trips to nearby attractions or activities. The Schoodic Peninsula part of Acadia is right across the small harbor from us. This smaller part of Acadia is not busy and offers some great views, sometimes accompanied by eagles. The small town of Winter Harbor is just minutes away and it's fun to poke around in the 5 and 10 store, galleries, etc. We finish up with hand-dipped milkshakes from Gerrishes Ice Cream Shop. Bar Harbor is only a 45 minute drive for shopping, lunch, and a drive through Acadia. We also enjoy kayaking on nearby Jones Pond. This year we drove north to Lubec (the easternmost town in the USA) and Fundy Bay where the views were startlingly beautiful. And I can't forget to mention the night skies. I stepped out on the deck one night at about 11:00 and I was surrounded by bright, bright stars. I felt like I was on a ride at Disney World...really. Last but certainly not least is the owner, Cathy. She is so friendly, smart and funny. We really love her and we appreciate the opportunity we've had to get to know her and to use her wonderful home.
You can tell from this description that we love Wonsqueak and Maine. WE ALWAYS LOVE TO GO THERE AND WE ALWAYS HATE TO LEAVE!
Thank you for the glowing review, Karan. And you KNOW the feeling is mutual. Wonsqueak loves it when you're here, and we hate to see you leave. I sure hope to see you next year. If I ever loose my "Aunt Cathy" privilege, I'm going to be bummed! Be well, and thanks again for coming to see us.
Wonderful Maine experience
The coastal home on Wonsqueak Lane was a pure delight. It felt like home to our generational family of six (adults). There was room for everyone and we never wanted for anything as it was so fully stocked and every need addressed. Our son-in-law and grandson enjoyed jumping into the cool Maine coastal waters. Spending time on the dock with family and just enjoying the quiet beauty was worth every penny.
We also all enjoyed our house guest - Lt. Dan - the 3-legged border collie. What a delightful dog who entertained us with his "singing" to the Bohemian Rhapsody. Cathy, our host, couldn't have been more helpful in making sure we were comfortable and our every need was met. This is the place for family reunions. Thank you, Cathy for sharing your piece of paradise and your furry friend. Hope he recovers from his sprain!
Enjoy Downeast Maine and Acadia National Park without the crowds and commercialization. Photographers and naturalists know that the Schoodic region is one of the best-kept secrets in the Park Service.
The Wonsqueak Harbor House is a local icon, and is frequently photographed by visitors as they exit Acadia NP's Schoodic Point loop. Built sometime in the 1940's, the building and wharf originally accommodated fishermen as they brought their huge seine nets on shore for repair and storage. Our family converted the structure into a summer camp in the 70's, then into a year-round residence. This is the first season we have opened our home to the public.
Anybody who is interested in coastal living on the rugged granite shores of Maine will fall in love with Wonsqueak Harbor! The house faces south, out of the harbor and to the open sea. Enjoy our rustic home with its million-dollar location on cool, casual, activity-filled Schoodic Peninsula.
