Historic Waterfront House With Wharf--Rare On-The Water Experience!
If you stayed any closer to the water, you'd be in a boat! This rustic yet comfortable house is built directly on the pink granite ledges that fall sharply into tiny Wonsqueak Harbor. At high tide (photo) you will hear water rushing and gurgling on the ledges beneath the living room, and over the next 12 hours you will watch the water level fall 12-14 feet, only to turn and start rushing up again.
OFF-SEASON RENTAL: IMPORTANT: Please note! The $75 per night off-season rental is the main floor only. Thi includes open living, dining, and kitchen area with bedroom (queen bed) and adjacent bath. This rental is suitable for one or two people. Owner may or may not be using upstairs, and you may or may not be sharing bath with owner. Check with owner for details.
The house has 4 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, open kitchen/dining/living area facing south to the open sea, and a large open loft upstairs. There are beds for 8-9 people. The large and sturdy wharf is THE place for lazing in the sun, birdwatching, or--our favorite--enjoying a lobster feast.
Cook up some fresh-caught lobster out on the wharf while you roast veggies on the grill. Raise a glass, enjoy your feast, take in the sunset, and feel the cool salt-air breeze. Clean-up is easy: Dump your lobster shells over the side for the crabs to finish up while you hose down the wharf. It doesn't get better than this . . .
Unless, of course, you'd like our cook to prepare your feast to order . . . and don't forget the blueberry pie!
THINGS TO DO: If you're feeling serene, you can easily enjoy a day just watching the tides rise and fall while you rest in the hammock or read by a window. When you're feeling energetic, hike along the rocky shoreline to the surf-smashed ledges at Spruce Point. You'll see tidal pools, eagles, and seals, and whatever has washed up on the rocks. What you won't find are people, as this stretch of coast is surrounded by private land and seldom visited by humans.
Are you brave? Wait for a high tide, then plunge off the wharf into 55-degree water. EXHILARATING! (This is a favorite activity of our children and dogs!)
Are you a kayaker? This is the place, and there's little I can say except look at the photos, check out the maps, and prepare for an unforgettable adventure. Bring your own kayaks, or rent from the outfit just a mile up the road. (They will also provide lessons.)
So much to do, and you've barely left the property! Please click on the links provided to get an idea of all the things to do in this area. Enjoy Acadia National Park, both on Mount Desert Island, and right across the harbor, a 5-minute walk from the Wonsqueak House. Visit art galleries, glass studios, and sculptors. Hike along a lake or up a mountain. Book an excursion on a whale-watching boat. Pack up a picnic and explore back roads. Go antiquing! If you'd like to bring your own boat, we can help you secure appropriate moorage. Make a daytrip into Canada or into mountainous interior Maine . . . fishing, anyone? Enjoy live music at acoustically charmed Hammond Hall, join a workshop in the annual Schoodic Arts for All festival, drop in on a yoga class in Winter Harbor. And if your trip isn't complete without shopping, head for the unique galleries and shops right on the peninsula, or make the one-hour drive to Bar Harbor for great dining and tons of shops. (Better yet: Take the ferry from Winter Harbor. Big fun!)
CARS OPTIONAL: If you'd like to really go green, you can easily get around on foot, by bike, on the water, and all over Acadia Nat'l Park (both at Schoodic and on Mount Desert Island) thanks to the extremely convenient LLBean shuttle bus service--it's FREE, and they will gladly get you, your bicycle, and/or your dog to just about wherever you'd like to go. You can catch an hourly shuttle from the end of our lane.
Whether you stick close to the house for complete relaxation or strike out on adventure, you are sure to enjoy a vacation at Wonsqueak Harbor House. We would be pleased to have you as our guests!

About Cathy Clark
We are Vince and Cathy Clark. We live here with our two daughters. Cathy's parents live in the adjacent home on the same piece of property. We intend to travel some over the summer while making our home available to guests.
Cathy Clark purchased this House in 1974
Why Cathy Clark chose Gouldsboro
Cathy's parents bought the place in the early '70's, rescuing it from its sad status as a derelict foreclosure. Having been built in the '40's, the wood structure served as a repair shed for fishermen's nets that were used back in the days when they seined the Gulf of Maine for herring and sardines. The building was full of rotting twine nets, and had been vacant for years. Time had taken its toll. Over the ensuing decades, my family restored the building, refurbished the wharf, brought in water and electricity, and gradually turned it from an eyesore to a summer camp, then to a full-time residence. Because current law forbids building this close the shoreline, there are only a handful of homes in Maine that sit directly over the water as this one does. It is truly one of a kind!
What makes this House unique
Do you long to live at ocean's edge? Do you yearn for the cool, clean, salty Maine air? Are you looking for a place where the family can spread out, and your dog will be welcomed? Does your eclectic family require a variety of activities ranging from lazing around on the wharf to rugged hikes, to first-rate shopping and dining? The Wonsqueak Harbor House gives you all this, and as we open our home for the first year, we are offering rates much lower than anything comparable. We hope to see you!

This cozy little cottage gives you the full experience of life on the sea!
The grounds and the house are unique. It is surrounded by a beautiful evergreen forest, but is also perched on magnificent Maine rocks. The deck extends into the ocean and offers unbelievable views! If you are a swimmer, boater, kayaker or hiker, you will find it right outside the door. Great food and drink nearby and just a "doggy paddle" away from Acadia and Schoodic Point. The best part of our stay was Cathy Bell Clark. She is friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable of the history and surrounding area. Love the state, but this is where I left my heart.
Lyn, it was great having you here. I'm well aware that you spend lots of time traveling to beautiful places all around the country, and that's why I'm especially flattered that you decided to visit the Wonsqueak Harbor House a second time. You seem to have had quite a good time, and that's what I love to see. Keep up those great FB posts, and I hope to see you again!
Wonsqueak Harbor house is one of our favorite places! From first walking onto the property and breathing in the sights and sounds of Wonsqueak, one is captured by the rustic, rugged beauty of the area. There is so much we enjoy -- the comfortable home, fishing off the dock, climbing and exploring on the rugged, rocky coastline, swimming in the cold ocean water, listening to the lapping of the waves in the early morning and watching for the eagle. One can find it very hard to leave.
Our family has been so blessed to be able to return each year since 2014 and all are looking forward to being there again next summer.......and the summer after that...."Good Lord willin' and the Creek don't rise."
Thank you, Cathy and Pat, for sharing your wonderful Wonsqueak Harbor home with us and for making us feel so welcome and at home.
Sue Gardner (and all the Gardners and Kisers)
Sue, it's ALWAYS our pleasure to have you here. You and Ed and all the gang have practically become part of our family. When I hear the kids having fun at the house, it's just as good as hearing my own kids and grandkids while they laugh and play and make memories they'll keep all their lives. It's been a great summer, and we sincerely look forward to your return in 2018. Be well!
A True Vacation, We are the Most Fortunate Family Around......
...To have stayed at Wonsqueak Harbor House! Any visitor here would be hard pressed to find a more magical spot on this place called Earth. We (my wife, 2 1/2 year old son and I) stayed here the week of 4th of July. The locals in surrounding towns said it was the "busy" time of year, but as far as we could see it was mellow, friendly and totally not crowded. Our host Cathy (and hopefully your host Cathy in the future) was so kind and genuine. Knowing we had a young one with us she had a baby monitor ready for use, a teddy bear, and pulled out an antique step stool, and many ideas of what to do with him. When we arrived Cathy had a home cooked meal and some groceries ready for us as we were traveling from Maryland and arrived in the evening. It usually takes our son quite awhile to warm up to new people and a new enviroment, within 5 minutes he was cruising around like he owned the joint, he felt so comfortable and welcome immediately. There are so many activities to do so close to your home base. Hiking, exploring, ferry trips, shopping, wildlife viewing, RELAXING, and so many more. We were a tad limited with how much our son coiuld do, but know that there is so much more possible. The home itself was very clean, rustic, and up to date with a really good WiFi signal. We ate in a lot, the kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, plates, and cutlery. We ate out a few times, loved the Salt Box in Winter Harbor, and the Wharf in Corea. We loved hanging out on the deck and watching seals, birds, the tide come in and out and having dance parties on the wharf. We jumped in the water a few times showing our brave side. We felt a true connection with the land, the sea and our host Cathy! Thank you Cathy for being caring, informative, and overall amazing! We loved it!!
Spectacular location away from the crowds. The perfect Schoodic retreat.
We had such a relaxing time at the Wonsqueak Harbor House. I almost hate to say how wonderful it is because I don't want to tell the whole world what a great thing we've found or there will never be availability on the calendar again! We loved sitting on the deck and just taking in the beautiful view with our morning coffee or afternoon cocktails, but it was also just a short walk or bike to the park trails so we spent a lot of time hiking and biking too. It was super convenient and easy to put our tandem kayak in right from the house and tour around the adjoining coves. We took advantage of the lobster pot, and the grill, and made most meals right there at the house. But we enjoyed a few meals out too - lobster roll lunch on the wharf in Corea and great fish and chips at the Pickled Wrinkle. On a rainy morning we drove into Ellsworth and got some great deals at LLBean. Another day we put the bikes on the rack and drove over to MDI to bike on some of the carriage paths. We caught sunset from the top of Cadillac Mtn. and then went into Bar Harbor for a really good dinner at Cafe This Way. But we always looked forward to getting back to the comfort of Wonsqueak Harbor house and really hated to leave when our time there came to an end. It truly was a perfect home away from home - quiet, private, comfortable, and relaxing. Thanks so much Cathy. We are grateful to have found you and your beautiful spot. We'd like to come back and maybe (if they're lucky) bring some friends or family with us.
Shh! Don't tell anyone...
This is what you think of when you think of a Maine vacation. A secluded cove across from the Schoodic Point area of Acadia National Park, a couple of quiet villages just up the road, ice cream stand (for the kids) and a restaurant/pub (for the grownups) just minutes away. A water taxi to Bar Harbor for the days that you want to join the cruise ship crowds on Mount Desert Island. Abundant light and a deck over the water make it a pleasure to sit just watching the tide. There are books, toys, and games for foggy or rainy days, a grill and a rocky beach for sunny day exploring. Cyclists and hikers will love the access to the park, and a quick clockwise car-ride around the peninsula will get you to shores overlooking Mark Island and Frenchman Bay, the open ocean at Schoodic Point, or the innumerable coves along the inner coast. In the park, see the sunset over Cadillac Mountain or scramble over the rocks at Blueberry Hill. Back at the house, watch an eagle glide overhead or a lobster boat drop off its pots; read a book in a deck chair while the kids catch crabs; bake a blueberry pie as the grand finale to a lobster dinner on the dock. Cozy and clean, beds for eight and all the pots, pans, coffeemakers (and towels!) that you need. The owner is caring and attentive and the house is perfectly set up for a vacation that you’ll wish could last forever.
Dan, thank you very much for your articulate and thoughtful comments. (Gee, it's good to have a scholar write your review!) It is my pleasure to see folks taking such delight in what our home and area have to offer. It was especially nice that your Spanish guests got to see a part of America that they are sure to remember fondly. It was a pleasure to have you here, and I truly hope we'll see you again. Many thanks to all of you!
What a great time we had at Cathy's, and she is such a beautiful person. Plenty of room in the house for eight of us. Enough room on the "dock" to have a lobster boil. Used our own kayaks 4 different nights and actually saw Harbor dolphins the very last night. Magical. Hope to be back one day.
Tammy, thank you for taking the time to review us, and I'm thrilled that you all had a grand time. Special thanks to the dolphins, too! I understand you normally visit a different place each year . . . but I dunno . . . you might still have quite a bit of exploring left to do. In any event, we'd love to have you return. Oh! And thank you for the honey . . . yummmmmm!
Enjoy Downeast Maine and Acadia National Park without the crowds and commercialization. Photographers and naturalists know that the Schoodic region is one of the best-kept secrets in the Park Service. The Wonsqueak Harbor House is a local icon, and is frequently photographed by visitors as they exit Acadia NP's Schoodic Point loop. Built sometime in the 1940's, the building and wharf originally accommodated fishermen as they brought their huge seine nets on shore for repair and storage. Our family converted the structure into a summer camp in the 70's, then into a year-round residence. This is the first season we have opened our home to the public. Anybody who is interested in coastal living on the rugged granite shores of Maine will fall in love with Wonsqueak Harbor! The house faces south, out of the harbor and to the open sea. Enjoy our rustic home with its million-dollar location on cool, casual, activity-filled Schoodic Peninsula.
