About the property

3 Bedroom Suite, 3 Bath, Hawaiian Beach House; or a single master suite rental

Kona Hale Pili is a craftsman's masterpiece and a modern adaptation of the traditional Hawaiian pili grass covered house. Originally constructed in 1972, Kona Hale Pili has been totally renovated and appointed with elegant wood and stone accents accommodating modern amenities and a environmentally conscious low voltage lighting system and point source hot water. Kona Hale Pili is comprised of three separate buildings with soaring vaulted ceilings that are centrally connected by an open air covered lanai. A open air uncovered lanai and lush tropical landscaping adjoin the central lanai. Located direct oceanfront at the north end of Kahaluu Bay, unobstructed views are offered from Kahaluu Beach to Kaiwi Point at the end of Kailua Bay. Enjoy watching the surfers at the Kahaluu surf break, reef fish and turtles, spinner dolphins and breaching whales, in season, and spectacular green flash sunsets. Kahaluu Bay is accessible adjacent to Kona Hale Pili for experienced water persons, or by an easy five minute walk to Kahaluu Beach. Kahaluu Bay is renowned for its plentiful tropical fish and green sea turtles. Kona Hale Pili is now available as a vacation rental. Take the virtual tour to fully experience the property.

Why Stephen and Joy Connor chose Keauhou

We have been vacationers and part time residents of Hawaii for over thirty years. Our travels have taken us to many beautiful tropical places, but Kona captivated us. We found Kona Hale Pili in need of some TLC and embarked on what has become a stewardship to return the property to a condition suitable for its unique location. We enjoyed the six year renovation journey creating a craftsman's dream. You will appreciate it when you see it.

What makes this house unique

Quite simply, the oceanfront location could not be created today due to building setbacks and zoning constraints.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I love the layout and openness of the house to the ocean. You did a great job building it out, fantastic!

Kona Hale Pili is a modern adaptation of the traditional Hawaiian house. Hawaiian open air living at its best with louvered windows. Air conditioning is not needed as the diurnal breeze from the ocean during the day and the mountains in the evening provide natural air circulation. Ceiling fans throughout provide gentle air circulation in the bedroom suites.

Spend a relaxing day with an unobstructed view of the ocean for exceptional dolphin and whale watching. You will also have the prime location for watching the surfers at the surf break.

Dining, groceries and shopping are all conveniently located nearby.

For experienced water persons only, the ocean is accessible from the adjacent lava point. Easy ocean access is available at Kahaluu Beach.

We look forward to having you as our guests!

A Perfect Pad in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

You know you are in an exceptional vacation rental when you regularly happen upon people taking pictures of the front of the house due to the thoughtful and stunning architecture....I am not kidding...this happened three times during the stay! The whole experience of staying in this house is nothing short of magical. The owners and property manager are super responsive and friendly, which is not always the case with VRBO. The location is close enough to town, but far enough away to ensure privacy and peace. The layout and furnishings are nothing short of perfection! The house happens to border some of the best snorkeling the island has to offer. We saw over a dozen turtles while snorkeling during our stay.....and we even saw a whale breaching in the distance, which is early for migration season! There was nothing better than coming back to this place for a cocktail after a day of fun in the sun. Do yourself a favor and pick this rental for your holiday in Kona. You will return home rested and relaxed and thankful that you got to experience this exceptional property and setting!

The property and the location was everything we were looking for in Kona. Close enough to everything, yet far enough away to be peaceful. Only thing we might add would be some air conditioning for some of the rooms during this time of year, and a way to clean up the rain in the central foyer as it can become slippery. Overall, we truly enjoyed staying here!

Owner's Response: Glad that you enjoyed our home and your vacation in Kona. As our listing explains, our home is a modern adaptation of a traditional Hawaiian open air concept house. Louvered windows and vented vaulted ceilings allow for natural air flow. As such, air conditioning is not a practical option. When it rains the open central lanai area will become wet, but is designed to drain any water. The majority of the lanai area is covered, so need to get wet. Embracing the open air concept, living with the environment in real time in a wonderful location next to the ocean, is quite amazing.

Absolutely perfect

This was one of the finest homes I've had the pleasure to be in, let alone stay in for several days with my family. At every moment you are surrounded by palpable quality and worksmanship. Also surrounded by amazing oceanfront views, soft sea breezes, gorgeous sunsets and the occasional spray from a large wave crashing on the lava rocks just below. Truly wonderful. Sleeping in the master suite closest to the ocean, the waves were very loud the first night, but then I think we got used to it and they became pleasant for the remaining nights. I came to love the sound while sleeping.

Swimming from the house was delightful if you are comfortable walking out onto some lava rocks and plunging into the ocean at a calm moment in the surf. I did this with mask, snorkel and fins in hand (putting the fins on once safely away from the rocks) and was treated to a turtle friend my first time in. This is probably only for strong swimmers - otherwise, Kahalu'u beach (aka turtle beach) is a five minute walk away, and there are plenty of other beaches within a short drive.

During our five-night stay we had a couple of rain showers. As a portion of the roof of the house is open, this meant that it basically rained in the house, which was a little weird but also kind of cool. Using a broom (provided in the trash closet) to spread out the little rain puddles and running a fan over the wet area speeded the drying process. Even without rain, it was necessary to sweep out vegitation debris from the floor under the open portion once or twice per day to maintain a clean space. This was all a small trade-off for the great pleasure of having an open-air space such as this. The actual living areas (the kitchen/living room, and each bedroom suite) are totally sealed off or openable to the air as desired. Really the design of the house is amazing. We felt privileged to be allowed to stay in such a fine home on our holiday.

Spectacular waterfront property. Just steps(if you don't count the rocks😄?)from snorkeling

  • 5 of 5

The house was well stocked with quality supplies. The architecture was amazing and the overall surroundings contributed greatly to the enjoyment of the vacation. Great family time and room for all. It was pretty hot while we were there and so some AC

In the bedrooms would have been nice. A minor inconvenience.

We would return here without hesitation. Owners were easy to deal with and responsive Malono and Aloha 🌴?🌴?

Photographic location

  • 5 of 5

We not only enjoyed the proximity we had to the ocean, for snorkeling, paddle-boarding, and swimming, we were happy to come back with family photographs crowded only by the ocean and rugged coastline. Awesome family times were afforded by the shared spaces.

Location was convenient for all our day trips. We want to go back soon!
