About John Stoltzfus

Ruthie was born in the village of Intercourse. Her parents were brought up in the Amish church but left the Amish church when she was two years old and joined a Mennonite church. She has four siblings. John was also brought up in a Amish family of nine children, his dad was a farmer on a dairy farm. John left the Amish church at age 21 and joined the same Mennonite church that Ruthie attended. We now attend Keystone Evangelical Free Church. We have two children and five beautiful grandchildren.

John Stoltzfus purchased this cottage in 2006

Why John Stoltzfus chose Dutch Country

We bought this property to provide our guests with a clean, cozy 'home away from home' that they can come to relax and be refreshed from all the busyness of life. You can sit on the porch and enjoy the garden and listen to the Amish buggies go by.

What makes this cottage unique

Lancaster County is a unique area to take sight seeing drives in the surrounding country side and see the Amish farmers working their fields. Within walking distance are approx. 50 shops. There are a number of Amish stores to visit, gift shops on Amish farms and buggy rides. There are a number of covered bridges that make beautiful pictures.John does some private tours in your vehicle to Amish farms. We also have a self guided tour available.

Loved this cottage . John made us feel welcome by coming to visit when we got there. He provided names of places near by that would interest us and let us 2 videos to watch which we loved and were very interested in. The cottage was adorable and very clean. We will definitely be back soon!!

Sweet Cottage in the heart of Amish Country!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at the Dawdi cottage and once again, it was perfect! The cottage is immaculate and has everything you need for a lovely stay in the heart of Amish country! John and Katie are wonderful hosts and their attention to detail shows throughout the cottage. There is even fresh bread, milk and homemade jam greeting you when you arrive! There are tons of shops located within walking distance, or if you prefer - just sit on the front porch and enjoy the sights and sounds of the town! The cottage worked out well for my elderly mom too - she had no difficulty with the very small step up onto the porch. I highly recommend the Dawdi cottage to anyone - you won't be disappointed!

Great place, better than any hotel room around. Spacious and great owner interaction.

What a great place to stay at the Cottage (Dawdi Haus)! Front porch with rockers, glider swing in the front YARD, yes a yard not a hotel hallway! Very spacious with two queen beds and a couch (sleeper?). Good sized bathroom, shower unit. Very elegantly decorated in true Amish fashion. The host left bread and jam (kinda like the Von Trappe family would sing about). Nice shopping area for Amish made stuff and not that far from Outlet shopping, eating, Sight and Sound Theatre and American Music Theatre. Did I mention food? Awesome area for great eats! Did not get to meet both the owners but did meet John an awesome and great host! TV, dvd, vcr, microwave, dorm fridge (oh, I forgot to mention the milk that was there for us along with small boxes of cereal).

The other property on site is the HOUSE, two bedrooms and sleeper couch, just a great place too. Thinking of taking all the family 8 or more, rent both places!

And if you do some traveling around the area, Litiz is a great place to visit, shopping at Wilbur chocolate factory and Clementine's boutique was our favorite!

Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

We have been visiting Lancaster County regularly since our eldest son was just an infant. We've stayed in chain hotels, local motels, and even driven up just for an afternoon. Now that we are a family of six, we've outgrown most hotel rooms and thought we'd give the Dawdi Haus a try and we are SO GLAD we did. What a charming cottage in a perfect location! Sitting on the porch watching horse and buggies clip clopping by is what a trip to Lancaster should be, and the Dawdi Haus delivered. The countryside drive instructions left by the Stoltzfuses led us through the most beautiful areas of farm land and to some delicious ice cream, too! Being walking distance to Kitchen Kettle and the rest of the shops of Intercourse was wonderful (especially on a busy Saturday!) and the location close by the community park was great for our kids to burn off some steam. Everywhere else we typically like to go was within a 15 minute drive-- specifically Strasburg RR and Shady Maple Market. Our children romped around the backyard chasing a rabbit, pumping water from the hand pump, and catching fireflies. Once the sun set, we had a wonderful view of the Heritage Days fireworks from the porch swing of the cottage. We think we've finally found our home away from home in Lancaster County and look forward to many future returns. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful home. Our kids are already dreaming of living in it when they grow up!

A nice welcome

  • 4 of 5

We were still quite jet-lagged having recently arrived in the USA from Switzerland/France. Upon arrival, we were left a very nice welcome note and also some homemade bread and delicious jam - a very nice touch. The cottage was so cosy and homely. How wonderful to be able to sit on the swing out on the porch and watch the Amish horse/buggies ride by, listening to the gentle clippety-clop of the hooves. It seemed almost surreal. The school opposite was full of laughter as recreation time arrived and all the children (dressed in their garb/bonnets) all piled out and played "children's" games in the grass - a sight almost forgotten these days. Just a short walk into the village of Intercourse provided a wide variety of shops and beautiful surrounding countryside. I loved driving along the lanes looking at the pristine houses and marvelled at the washing lines all proudly displaying the same Amish outfits, just in a different array of sizes! At the end of a weary day, it was fabulous to come back "home" and relax in the cottage and chill out on the porch having a nice cup of tea (well, we are British !).

We are located in the heart of the Amish people and you will see and hear their horse and buggy's as they come into town to do business at the stores and use one of the three banks.

The Cottage is within easy walking distance of approx. 50 shops including Kitchen Kettle where you can take buggy rides to Amish farms.

Our desire is to make the Cottage a 'home away from home' where you can come to relax.
