About Susan Gurley

We are mid westerners who fell in love with New Orleans. Of course it doesn't hurt that our daughter and family live a few blocks away. She told us we must buy this house, and we did! Everything has been replaced or restored, from the piers, to the siding, insulation and wiring, those things no one can see but that make the house very comfortable. We had a blast decorating the interior, and hope you like the artwork and our small but significant and growing library of books on the area's history.

Susan Gurley purchased this house in 2013

Why Susan Gurley chose East Riverside

We wanted a comfortable home close to our family. This shotgun double is perfect for us. There is a long-term tenant next door. Our 900 square foot side is spacious enough to stretch out in, yet small enough to be manageable.

Great experience all around

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here over Memorial Day weekend and this was our very first time to NOLA. Rather than waste your time and repeat all the great things the other happy reviews have to say (which we completely agree with)...I will share with you the answers to the questions I had before making this reservation and getting around once we got there.

GETTING AROUND - My wife and I are close to 50 and chose to try our luck getting around without a rental car for the entire trip. We did not use UBER/Lyft. We are still "old school" and chose to use cabs. We also utilized the street cars and the city bus.

-Airport - took a cab and was about 20-30 mins to get to the unit at midnight on Friday night - $40 (was $36 for return trip Tues morning - no idea why the difference - didn't ask)

-French Quarter/Bourbon St. - From the unit we used street cars and the bus. Street car was fun but the bus was quicker. Both offer unlimited day passes for $3/person and can be used for both. Exact change only-no credit cards-there is also an app. The Magazine St. bus runs along Magazine St all the way to Canal street (edge of French Quarter) and back. St Charles street car gets you basically to the same area just a few blocks difference. FYI...street cars have inconsistent schedules and take longer to get there while buses run regularly. We walked to the street car (St. Charles street) and to the bus on Magazine St. The entire neighborhood (aka Garden District) is surprisingly safe and inviting even at night. We never once felt like we were in a bad place even after midnight.

SUPERDOME - we went to a concert at the Superdome - after we arrived we were told my wife's bag was too big and would not be allowed in. This is how we found out it costs $28 round trip to the house and back by cab.

FOOD - we booked 2 food tours through "New Orleans Secrets" The Magazine St food tour and the Seafood and Shrimp Boil Tour. Both were very enjoyable. The starting point to the Magazine St tour is within walking distance or you could take a 1-2 minute bus ride to get there. The other takes place in the FQ. The Magazine St area is so much nicer than the FQ area. I'm glad we visited the FQ area but I won't miss that smell. Magazine St. had plenty of restaurants and shops to keep us busy.

The architecture is so worth checking out and there is at least one cemetery within walking distance if that's your thing. Hopefully this helps you have as good of a time as we did. :-)

Great location and a very nicely maintained residence. We loved it!

  • 5 of 5

If you’re interested in seeing more than just the usual sights and attractions of New Orleans, this is the place you want. You’re still within a couple miles of the French Quarter, but you’re also close to restaurants, stores (including groceries), bars, brewpubs and parks. It’s fantastic just to walk around and admire the neighborhoods. The residence itself was very clean, roomy, had a very nice kitchen, a bathroom and a half, and a beautiful, comfortable 4-poster king-size bed. You can’t go wrong here!

Very nice neighborhood home for a weekend visit

  • 4 of 5

This classic NOLA shotgun is clean and well put together. It's a great spot from which to venture out for shopping and tourism. Near a vibrant Magazine St. shopping and food district, you can walk around comfortably from morning into the evening. There is good public transportation to all tourist areas and if you are big walkers, as we are, you can get in lots of steps to see all that NOLA has to offer.

Nice living room, functional TV/dining space and kitchen for weekend tourism, comfy bed and 1.5 baths. The house is clean and well maintained.

A Wonderful Place

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for a week. We were so pleased that we had. The cottage itself was immaculate, comfortable and the owner was extraordinarily accommodating. Our deposit was immediately returned. The shotgun is furnished in comfortable and lovely furniture (especially the bed). The washing machine and dryer are very large. We didn't use the kitchen (too many good restaurants), but it was big and looked to have everything one would need. The location was an easy walk to both the Magazine Street bus and the St. Charles streetcar, so it was simple to get to the French Quarter. There were many good restaurants nearby, so in all ways, this was a great place to stay. I highly recommend it.
