About Susan Gurley

We are mid westerners who fell in love with New Orleans. Of course it doesn't hurt that our daughter and family live a few blocks away. She told us we must buy this house, and we did! Everything has been replaced or restored, from the piers, to the siding, insulation and wiring, those things no one can see but that make the house very comfortable. We had a blast decorating the interior, and hope you like the artwork and our small but significant and growing library of books on the area's history.

Susan Gurley purchased this house in 2013

Why Susan Gurley chose Central City/Garden District

We wanted a comfortable home close to our family. This shotgun double is perfect for us. There is a long-term tenant next door. Our 900 square foot side is spacious enough to stretch out in, yet small enough to be manageable.

Lovely property

  • 5 of 5

We had always wanted to experience staying in a traditional shotgun home: This was perfect for us. In a great location, close to Magazine Street, this home was meticulous and thoughtfully outfitted. There was coffee, spices et. al including lovely linens, towels and soap. We felt very welcome and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We would recommend this property to anyone who is looking for an easy walk to restaurants and who is also looking for a lovely home away.

I fell in love with this restored shotgun house that has been put together with TLC. Every room was a treat to be in even the bathrooms. The ceiling fans in each room were used and assisted in making the rooms comfortable in the stifling heat even though there is an excellent central air conditioning. I loved the wide plank wooden floors and the tile in the back bathroom. The little beautiful backyard was a real treasure too. It is 5 miles from the French Quarter. I loved my walks in the Garden District neighborhood and visiting the funky shops on Magazine Street. A few more blocks up was the delightful St Charles Avenue. It was quiet. I highly recommend staying at this little jewel.

Better than the French Quarters

  • 5 of 5

This was the most relaxing and entertaining vacation I have had in a long while. This place is close to some of the greatest places to eat (without lines you have to wait in), like the Red Dog Café (amazing breakfasts), Rum House (amazing drinks), Frankie & Johnnies (crawfish). Be sure and check out the Black information book in the house - lots of great suggestions for dining, etc. The fact that we got to park literally a few steps from the front door was amazing and it was free, saved us tons of parking fees if we stayed somewhere else. AND the bed was amazing - so comfortable and it was so quiet! There is a step stool for those of us that are vertically challenged, because the bed is quite high. There are 2 bathrooms - a washer and drier and the backyard was amazing too. I can't say enough good things about this place. We decided to spend our entire time in the Garden District because of all the cute shops and fantastic Dining. THANK you Susan for an amazing place to stay!!

Just perfect

  • 5 of 5

I can only agree 100% with review by Jordan and Cheryl who stayed in March .

This place was perfect. We stayed for 6 weeks. Quiet neighbor hood great neighbors .

House beautifully decorated, amazing kitchen has everything we needed ,spacious. We spent almost every morning and evening in back yard enjoying weather on comfortable rocking chairs.

The location is just walking distance from everything you need. Magazine St with all its shops and restaurants , St Charles avenue. Just 1/2 hr walk to the most beautiful Audubon Park.

Close to some of best restaurants in New Orleans. (Patois, Clanceys , Shaya ,Dick and Jenny's just to name a Few)

This is an elegantly restored shot gun and more.

Thank you Susan hope to return again. Pierre and Maureen

Even better than expected

  • 5 of 5

The shotgun on Annunciation Street surpassed all of our expectations. It's online description and photos did not do it justice. The interior was clean, spacious and very well appointed. The kitchen, in particular, had everything we required for creating our own NOLA meals. Having two bathrooms was a real plus, making getting ready in the morning much easier and quicker than sharing a bathroom. The backyard was a great setting for starting our day over morning coffee and planning our events. Take advantage of it as not many rentals offer a private yard!

As for the was ideal. Far enough from the maddening crowds of the French Quarter yet close enough for easy access to anywhere via the St. Charles streetcar (about a 10 minute walk). And between the shotgun and St. Charles is Magazine Street -- a shopping and dining destination we regularly visited. We also loved being so close to two large grocers -- Rouse's is only a few blocks away on the river; Fresh Market is about a 15 minute walk at the west side of the Garden District. We shopped both, Fresh Market for more specialty items and Rouse's for anything we'd want (they offer fresh boiled shrimp and crawfish throughout the day along with a large assortment of fish and seafood). In addition to easy access to the French Quarter, the St. Charles streetcar made for a very easy transport to Audubon Park, another great destination for a picnic and leisurely stroll amid beautiful homes and to the Garden District for truly spectacular homes. (Tip: do a walking tour with Two Chicks and be sure to request guide Loki.)

Other location pluses are the dining opportunities. Two of our favorites included La Boulangerie, a French-style bakery on Magazine, was an almost daily visit, and Atchafalaya on Louisiana Ave. was another easy 15 minute walk and was one of the finest upscale meals of our trip.

Lastly, Susan was a very informative and responsive owner. All emails were answered within 24 hours, more typically within a couple of hours. If we ever have the opportunity for a return visit to NOLA, I can't imagine us staying anywhere besides Susan's shotgun on Annunciation.

Our experience at the Uptown shotgun double could not have been better. The owners were so prompt and accommodating. It is well-appointed and comfortable, a wonderful place to stay. It was definitely a key part of a great Mardi Gras experience for us!
