1 bedroom, 1 bath, European cottage. Beautiful wrought iron and Spanish tiles through out the house. Private pool with great sunset views, and ocean views. 200 feet from the beach in Frank Bay. You can hear the waves hitting the beach at night. Just a 5 minute walk by the sea into the town of Cruz Bay. 3 parking places.
Very easy to walk into town for boat trips, shopping, excursions or night life activities! Nice, clean, private and easy.
I am a sculptor, painter, and a stone mason.
Benjamin Shepherd purchased this cottage in 2013
Its romantic. You can hear the waves hit the beach at night. Count all the shooting stars laying by the pool.
Your own private pool. Parking is such a hassle in town and from this place it is so easy and delightful to walk.
After visiting St. John multiple times before, this was our first trip with our new baby, she had just turned a year when we arrived. This cottage was within walking distance of Cruz Bay which was great for us since we found ourselves pushing the little one in her stroller at least twice a day. The little extra room off of the bedroom was a perfect place for her pack and play.
We really enjoyed the pool as well. There are not a lot of private villas/cottages in this price range that have a private pool.
Lastly, we appreciated the privacy at this cottage, it's on a large lot and felt very private when in the yard.
Thank you to the manager, Jen, for making sure that we had everything we needed!
The place was great, nothing fancy but a nice and quiet place to unwind for a few days, easy walking distance to the restaurants in Cruz bay.
What a perfect way to experience St John Island life. Franks Bay Cottage was a paradise getaway for both of us.
The grounds are very tranquil. The cottage is build like a traditional island home. The stone floor, the walk in shower, the iguanas, the humming birds and the geckoes immersed us in a true island feeling. To get up in the morning have a cup of tea, swim in the wonderful private pool and listen to the sounds of the island life waking up, there is nothing more relaxing. The pool was also a great benefit when we came back from the beach and the salt water to cool down before getting ready for the evening. The accommodations were perfect. The bed was comfortable and the AC in the room kept us cool at night. The front screened-in living room was great to relax after a long day at the beach and enjoy a glass of wine with a nice evening island breeze that came through. Super close to downtown, walking distance, how great it was to be able to enjoy the nightlife of Cruz Bay and safely walk back. Frank Bay Cottage was a short distance to Frank Bay Beach where we could enjoy some extraordinary snorkeling. A well kept local secret.
The ability to have a fridge, microwave and stove allowed us to keep our beverages cold and to store food for breakfast and sandwiches for the beach. A cooler was provided for us to keep our food chilled while at the beach.
What a refreshing way to escape a commercial hotel and truly experience life on the island.
Our host Jennifer Doran went above and beyond expectations, organizing paddle board rentals, suggesting restaurants that were divine (La Tapa and The Terrace), helping organize food choices for the stay and letting us know about all the happy hours that were well used :-) Her suggestions of beaches led us to experience probably some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Her knowledge of the island (30+ years) was a great added value to be able to enjoy the island of St John from the inside without having to dissect pamphlets and go through tourist booklets.
Frank Bay Cottage was an extraordinary experience and a beautiful Villa and we would highly recommend it to anyone that wants to discover St John from the inside.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Frank Bay Cottage. It was close enough to walk to town in 5 minutes, yet peaceful & calm. It was wonderful to have our own pool to relax by in the evenings & after a day at the beach. Jennifer is one of the best assets of the cottage....she is so helpful and went out of her way to accommodate us. We would definitely stay here again.
This home was in such poor condition we had to leave. The property appears to be for sale, so guessing the owner really doesn't care about it much anymore.
As mentioned, we vacated the property in less than a day due to the following reasons:
The AC was a barely working window unit in the bedroom only & none of the windows or doors closed enough to keep any cool air inside.
Fans were broken.
The 'seating area' pictured is not secure & just an open air patio. The sofas in the owners photos are actually wicker patio furniture covered in fabric.
The bed is extremely worn old & stinky.
Light switches falling out of the walls.
Found a roach IN the fridge.
Had to sleep in a mosquito net. Seriously, bugs everywhere due to stagnant air (since its downhill no breezes are possible) & being on top of an old pond (brown & smelly).
The only way to lock the house was via a padlock on the interior iron gates to the kitchen - you feel like you are in a hot jail box. All windows had those iron bars in the photos but they aren't as quaint when they are all padlocked. Made us question the safety. Felt like a jail cell seeing locks & bars on every window.
The 1 bathroom towel bar was falling off the wall.
We were informed at check in that the power goes off regularly rendering the water (sink & toilets) useless.
Iguana poop everywhere - quite stinky too.
Very steep hill to house that is not well lit at night.
All but 3 pool patio chairs were broken & unusable. Pool water level was about 6" too low and was not being filtered - very dirty.
No TV, No radio, No phone (not advertised this is included, but a just a note for those who assume houses in 2016 come with these items)
Absolutely NO ocean view despite claims on the home description there is a view. You can barely see a brown stagnant pond from the pool, the roof of the shack & some other houses. There are wooden window shutters that can't be moved & the kitchen window was falling out of the frame & wall.
Note: Frank Bay is not the beach pictured. The real Frank Bay consists of an enormous electrical box & a rocky shore, NO way to hear the waves from the house.
Overall the house is very misrepresented, rundown, & in complete disrepair. Do not stay here! For the price, so many other options are available for a much better value.
If I could give this place negative stars, I would.
Despite voicing our concerns, the only help the owner offered was a second portable AC unit.
This place is a dump!!
The location of this property is perfect! It is close to town yet quiet and comfortable. The AC works great in the bedroom for comfortable evenings and the home is furnished for everything you would need. The property manager Jenn was the icing on the cake as she was constantly available and checked up on us occasionally to see how we were doing. She also picked us up at the ferry landing when we arrived and took us to the house to make sure we knew were everything was located and operational.
St. John is mostly national park and filled with beautiful ruins of Sugar Mills. Many right on the water. Excellent restaurants and beach bars with live music provide excellent entertainment. A just a short 5 minute walk by the sea to town.
