About shelia or A. G. Spicola
Florida natives who love the water and the quiet privacy of Casey Key but also love to drive to Venice or Sarasota to go to the opera, out to dinner, and so much more. We love having our children and grandchildren down for family gatherings. There's a new scene everyday at the beach, so we never tire of walking the beach, swimming in the crystal clear water, or just sitting out.

Nature lovers gem
In reading other reviews I can agree and disagree. This is truly a unique and magical place. It is definitely for a certain kind of renter. If you love privacy, if you love nature, if you love the most beautiful sunsets and sunrises, this is the place for you. We have been back to this charming house several times.
It works perfectly for our immediate family of 4 and our extended family of up to 12 for a day trip. The couches described as "dumpster ready" are described by my nephews as the most comfortable couches ever. The landscaping is lush and natural, the views from the master bedroom of the gulf and the back guest bedroom of the bay are amazing. The kitchen and living areas are large and open and can accommodate a number of people without ever feeling crowded. Anyone who comes to visit for the day is always so impressed. It feels like an old family property...so rare to find in Florida anymore
I would say one of our favorite features is the big picnic table under a 200 year old tree that faces the gulf. It is absolutely wonderful for having lunch or dinner while looking at the beach. There are so many areas to sit down with a book in the beautiful breeze. The beach is wonderful with soft sand and a gentle slop. We rarely see anyone else on the beach.
This location is extremely private on a private road with only a few houses beyond this house. Great for biking or wonderful walks along the gulf. I understand that some are put off by the vintage charm of this house, which is why I say it is not for everyone, but our family finds it to be one of the most relaxing and enjoyable houses we have ever rented. It is clean and comfortable and a terrific value for the location and amenities. We absolutely love love love this house!
Location Location saves this house
This is hard to review because even though the home itself is in disrepair - it sits on such a unique property for some it could be worth it. There were only 2 reviews when I rented it so I was not prepared. Everything the angry reviewers said about the house is true but there are more - poor plumbing, falling broken gutter, only tiny oven of ancient stove worked & the couches well dumpster ready there are more issues but I think you get the point. But - it was clean I know that sounds impossible but it's true. It's a clean falling apart home that sits on a magical piece of property.
We went for Christmas w/ my 25yr old twins likely the last vacation for us as just our small family so it would have been precious to me even if I was in a tent. Hubby and boys give it 0 stars for the record. Here is my take - it's a remote pristine little island that I doubt you'd find a place to rent as inexpensively as this. Certainly not cheap but likely cheaper than any of the mansions on the island. The beach in front of the house is amazing, shells plentiful- the bay, if the dock has not been condemned, is lovely!
If not for the location - I'm sure I'd agree w/ my family but personally - I'd go back - but only because I loved the location.
The couple who owns it does make attempts to be helpful - But in the condition the property is in, it's like putting a bandaid on wet skin. It's not going to last. Personally would not take young kids at all-just too stressful.
All in all - I would never rent or expect to rent a home in this condition but the beach- the island - is absolutely worth a trip and you must read Stephen King's Dumas - he has a home on the island - and references landmarks you'll recognize.
This house is a dump
You should be ashamed of yourself for renting this house in this condition. So many broken parts, too many to list, but here is a start; broken windows, cracked windows, windows that don't open or close, duct tape holding sliding glass doors together, sliding glass doors that barely open, a pair of kitchen tongs holding kitchen doors closed, broken cabinets, a oven that barely works, the ac in the bedrooms barely works, no light in the master bath, ...the list goes on. But worst of all; a completely unsafe dock that is falling apart. I could not even have my parents walk out on the dock to get on our boat, TOO UNSAFE.
The location of this property is the only good thing about it.
A true gem! Private beach, bay kayaking
This is a true gem. Its in the secluded area of Casey Key and is a special property. Full gulf to bay with wonderful natural landscaping.
The master bedroom has views of the gulf and the back bedroom has amazing views of the bay. The 3rd bedroom worked great for us with 3 kids under 11.
There is an open kitchen and great sitting areas. The outdoor areas are really amazing. You have your own private beach (we did see one person all week). There is a dock on the bay where we saw fish jumping and dolphins. There's a large picnic table under large trees near the dunes. Its a great spot for lunch or just sitting in the shade on a sunny day.
We had an amazing time and really enjoyed this property.
Exactly what we were looking for!
We stayed at the Casey Key House last week, and absolutely loved it. I was down there with kids on a cycling training mission. The road riding from this location was excellent. It was very easy to link rides using bike paths and roads with wide shoulders.
After our rides, the beach in the front yard (on the Gulf) and the intracoastal waterway in the back yard (that's right... water front AND back!) provided endless opportunity for the kids to sunbathe, fish, kayak, swim, etc. The kids loved it! You could not ask for nicer sunsets (or a nicer place to have morning coffee!).
The house is not a mansion or museum. It is a real house where a real family raised their children and probably created many fond memories. Being a landlord myself and an engineer, I could identify some work that needed to be done, but nothing that affected our enjoyment of the property. That said, the house is spacious, well-furnished, fully functional, comfortable, and clean. With teenagers, it was great to have 3 bathrooms! The pictures accurately represent the house. We had everything we needed, and did not have any issues, but the owners met us at the house to welcome us, and made it clear that they were available if we needed anything.
We loved it, and will absolutely return next year if it is available.
Casey Key is a very private and quiet island located between Venice and Sarasota which each has all kinds of cultual and sporting activities. The home is at the north end of Casey Key on a private road right on the Gulf of Mexico and the Intercoastal Waterway or bay as we call it.
