Overview

About the property

Lodge, 7 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms On 5 Acre Homestead With Private Pond, Sleeps 15

Summer or winter, this rustic retreat is perfect for some Montana mountain play time. It's one you'll fall in love with and won't want to leave!

Grandpa's Cabin is one of two original family homesteads we offer in this very special location, easily one of the most unique in the U.S. Its five acres are situated on a family homestead and the property is bordered by Duck Creek pond, which offer some of the best blue ribbon trout fishing in the West.

The property is less than 1/8 mile from Yellowstone National Park on its west side, and offers easy access across the street to backcountry trails in both Yellowstone Park and Gallatin National Forest.

This home offers breathtaking views of nature at its finest, and with huge picture windows offering views across Duck Creek pond to the western mountains of Yellowstone National Park.

Wildlife Viewing: Duck Creek Retreat and the immediate surrounding area is rich in wildlife, including bison, elk, deer, moose, grizzly bear, black bear, otter, beaver, muskrat, Canadian geese, ducks, Trumpeter swan and Sandhill cranes.

Fishing: World class fishing is available on private Duck Creek and Duck Creek Pond. A professionally installed fish ladder permits runs of wild Brown and Rainbow trout from the Madison River and nearby Hebgen Lake. Native Brook trout also inhabit the pond and Brown trout up to 32 inches have been caught and released. A Montana fishing license is not required to fish on the Pond, but it is on other Montana waters. A Yellowstone Park license is required to fish inside the Park.

The west entrance to Yellowstone Park and the town of West Yellowstone are only a short 8.5 mile (14km) drive away, W. Yellowstone offers everything you'd hope to find in a destination resort town, from restaurants, live theater, museums and shopping to equipment rentals and guide services.

Three nights in a rustic cabin experience

  • 4 of 5

Overall it was a lovely stay.

Pros: plenty of space, lots of bedrooms, a pool table, and a lovely outdoor fireplace.

Cons: carpeting, Linens, bathrooms, pretty much everything needs to be updated. There were bats in the house initially, but the owner and management were able to take care of the situation. There was a news paper and tape around the indoor fireplace which I did not understand and it was never explained to me. Because it's summertime when we visited, there was lots of overgrown grass and weeds and such, and I felt like they should've been mowed back. Also, because it's summertime, there's lots of bugs and mosquitoes outside.

If you have never visited Yellowstone before, trust me it's hard to find a place to stay in West Yellowstone. So I felt lucky to get this cabin which had lots of space and entertainment for my teenage kids. We would stay there again if we visited West Yellowstone. So although I listed a lot of cons, I would stay there again. Hopefully the owner will take note and make some improvements to the property.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review, and so glad that you enjoyed your stay! And thanks for letting us know about the boat, it is being repaired and should float high and dry and be ready for another summer of fishing and fun!

Good for large groups but needs heat

  • 2 of 5

The house is good if you have a large group but the front part of the house where the kitchen is not comfortable to be in unless you are basically dressed for the outdoors. The back part of the house has a gas fireplace which you can be comfortable in.

Cool and comfortable place. Lots of room.

  • 4 of 5

I'm glad the owners pay attention to the reviews- there's a brand new coffee pot and the grill had been dug out of the snow when we arrived. As previously stated, firewood is an absolute must. One of the cool things about this place, especially in the winter, is the fireplace. It is much cooler with a fire burning in it and wood was not easy to find in town. We will definitely rent this unit again.

Some suggestions

  • 4 of 5

It was a great place and had plenty of room. I would suggest when you know guests are coming have the house equipped. We had to dig out the bbq, 4 coffee pots but not one worked completely, had to piece a few together to make one work, I agree with one of the posts firewood totally should have been provided. Maybe put that is BOLD print b/c you NEED firewood to stay warm in the house. Great time was had by all however in West Yellowstone.
