Overview

About the property

Historic Downtown Artsy 'Alpine Studio,' near Marfa, in Alpine - 3 beds

The dog and child friendly Alpine Studio is located at 106 West Murphy Street downtown Alpine on historic Murphy Street, within easy walking distance of everything in Alpine. Three beds - 1 king 1 full and 1 single - comfortably accommodate one - a couple or - families and friends. The master king bed is a talalay organic latex and cotton dreamily comfy mattress with silky soft sheets and a light down comforter (nights are chilly in the high desert) The Studio is quite large. There is a yellow circular dining room table with 4 chairs in the second bedroom with the full size futon and antique Portuguese twin bed. There's a table for 2 by the kitchen in the main room. There's an additional sidewalk cafe table for 2 outside at the front of the building: great for people watching! (AND ordering 'delicioso' food from the next door Jalapenos mexican restaurant which they will deliver AND give you 10% off the tab:) El Patio mexican restaurant just opened on the other side of the Studio ..and they're fab also:)

Alpine is located at 'the hub of the wheel' and the neighboring communities are approx. 20 minutes away in 3 directions:

Marfa (west/huge minimalist art scene - Donald Judd), Marathon (east/Gage hotel)

Fort Davis (north/Historic Fort, McDonald's Observatory)

The Alpine Studio is 1/2 block south of the Amtrak station (there is some occasional train noise so I supply individually wrapped earplugs for sensitive sleepers:). The Holland Hotel is 2 blocks away (nicest hotel in town) and they provide the same for their hotel guests. Murphy street was Alpine's main street in some of it's earliest years as 'Murphyville.'

The Alpine Studio is very spacious with 2 private front entrances and 1 back door leading out to the back yard. There are 6 lavender deck chairs and additional seating, along with an umbrella. It's a 2 bedroom (3 beds: 1 king 1 full futon and 1 twin)/1 bath with fully stocked kitchen (fridge/toaster oven/microwave and single hot plate burner) and enormous sink. As you enter the main room, there is the king bed and in the adjoining room, separated by curtains, there is the additional full size futon and a twin bed. The Studio is very pet friendly. There are 3 central ac/heat units and a laundry facility. Please smoke outdoors (and remember we're in the beautiful tinder box of the mountainous Chihuahuan Desert :)

We have high speed internet - and a TV with DVDS but no cable.

The Alpine Studio is located next door to several fun shops and restaurants where you can dine on tasty mexican food ('Jalapeños'), enjoy delicious coffee/pastries/internet and slurp icy 'raspas' (Raspa co.) and shop for gifts and treasures (Brown Dog Gardens).

The place is incredibly well located for exploring on foot.

Holland street is one block north of Murphy Street and it is the 'other' main street (on the north side of the Amtrack 'tracks')

Holland street boasts: the Holland Hotel (2 blocks) with a great bar and restaurant, the Saddle Club (lovely bar and tapas/4 blocks away), the Reata restaurant (upscale: 4 blocks), the world famous Railroad Blues honky tonk pub/music venue (4 blocks),the Rangra movie theatre (2 blocks), several art galleries/fabulous shops (Ivey's, Gallery on The Square, Kiowa Gallery, 'yours truly' at Galeria Sibley) and locally owned Front Street books (daily New York Times/Wall Street Journal available). Plaine coffee shop (wonderful homemade pastries/cappucinos) with the best West Texas 'cow dogs' next door (including vegan:) Plaine coffee shop (3 blocks) and the Holland Hotel (2 blocks).

Sul Ross State University is about 12 blocks east on Holland Avenue, next door to our fave italian restaurant. La Trattoria (great pizzas, pasta and sandwiches/family owned). There is another great pizza rest. 'Guzzi Up' across from the Holland Hotel (1 block away) and the Bread and Breakfast (2 blocks) is also a dynamite breakfast/lunch spot. Sul Ross University has a great Museum Of The Big Bend and a huge indoor salt water pool that is open to the public and costs $2:). There are also some great hiking trails behind the university that give you an amazing 360 view of the country (15-20 minutes up). There is a 'desk' on the top of Sul Ross hill that has a notebook in it to record your ruminations - fun activity!

The skies in our country are unfathomably clear and beautiful so make sure to schedule a star gazing party at Mcdonald's Observatory in Fort Davis about 45 minutes away. The Fort is also a lovely spot.

Balmorhea boasts the largest spring fed public pool in the state, with amazing cottage rentals.Check them out! Prada Marfa in Valentine is also a tres chic spot to locate for the intrepid traveller that may want to experience 'all things Marfa.:)'

Big Bend National Park/the mexican border are about 45 minutes south. (Terlingua Ghost Town boasts the Starlight Theatre/restaurant, Desert Sports runs river trips/biking trips: great folk)

Big Bend Ranch State Park tends not to be as busy as BBNationalPark and has a wonderful (and cheap) bunkhouse for accommodations or the old adobe ranch headquarters that is dreamy. Great camping, hiking, biking etc..The solitario region is awesome and one of our fave spots.

Other:

Blue Water grocery store for organic food on hwy 118 south.

Saturdays 9-10:30 am: Farmer's Market is 1 block away on Murphy Street (be still my heart:) in the old Ritchey Hotel that is being lovingly (and slowly) restored.

Regina's for mani/pedi, Pretty Bird Salon on Murphy Street or Americana Aveda Salon for hair.

Call/email me with any questions.

'Neighbor Nancy' has Brown Dog Gardens down the street and is your 'go to person' if you have any immediate needs when here or I am a text away :)

Art work in studio is by Woody Farris (Fredericksburg), Lizanne Thate (Austin/Fredericksburg), Matt Skinner (Alpine, Colorado Springs), Roger Cutforth (San Miguel/Terlingua), Shiloh Sibley-Cutforth (Austin), Rachel Sibley (Alpine/Austin), Liz Sibley (mosaics). We have more of their 'stuff' at Galeria Sibley.

Please check out by 11a.m. unless you have made other arrangements with us.

There is a $10 charge per stay for use of the 3rd bed and an additional $10 charge per stay if you have dogs that shed because of the 'double vacuuming' required post stay. Thank-you for your understanding.

Special reduced rate for week reservations can only utilize one weekend ie no Sat to Sat bookings please

About Liz Sibley

My husband Hiram and I have lived in Alpine for 35 years. He is a 3rd generation West Texan. I am a hybrid from all over (England, South Africa, Virgin Islands) We founded the Alpine Montessori School 29 years ago/I worked as the admin. for 14 years and am still very involved. I'm a mosaic artist. Our 2 children were born and reared in West Texas (you raise chickens, you rear kids:) Both are artists. Chris is in Film/Media in LA/Austin/Alpine and Rachel is also in Tech/Media/Creative arts. We are very proud of this beautiful area we call home and are tickled to share it with you via our guest cottage/Historic home: The Alpine Studio. Come stargaze and enjoy!

Liz Sibley purchased this house in 2013

Why Liz Sibley chose Big Bend Country

We rescue and restore old houses. The Studio has always appealed to us architecturally and historically. We also own the Historic Bottle House BnB next door. Murphy Street is a fabulous area that is coming 'into it's own' with murals, cool restaurants, shops and galleries.

What makes this house unique

Proximity to everything...walk!

Charming place, great location.

  • 4 of 5

The pictures don't do the place justice; quaint, quirky, charming, and art-filled. Lots of labels & explanations throughout the studio -- a nice touch.

The train horns at night are indeed loud (and on one night there were at least 8 trains) despite my fancy wax earplugs. Tolerable if you have, say, 10 hours to get 8 hours sleep.

It's a great jumping off spot for Big Bend, Marfa, and Ft. Davis, and the next time I'm back in that spectacular area I will definitely book the Alpine Studio again.

Quaint lodging, great location

  • 5 of 5

Was on a trip out to West Texas with the family before school started. This property was perfect for us, easily within walking distance to most places in Alpine. Great food from the food truck right next door, farmer's market just a block away on Saturday morning, and all the shops in Alpine just across the train tracks.

Very Good

  • 4 of 5

The place was perfect for our needs. We were able to use it's central location to hit all the area's attractions (Marfa lights, Ft. Davis, McDonald Observatory, and Balmoreah State Park). Train noise was an an issue just once and not that big of a deal. Very clean and eclectic. The small shower was the only negative. Overall, very positive place to stay.

Alpine Art Studio - Quaint and Fun

  • 4 of 5

Description is accurate. Only complaint is that the shower was merely a trickle.

Artsy place in Alpine

  • 5 of 5

On our second trip to West Texas, my husband and I wanted to spend more time in Alpine. We use VRBO for all our out of town travel and are satisfied with the dozens of locations we have over the years. The Alpine Studio and Liz the owner is the reason we use rental property and no longer stay at hotels. The process of renting the property was smooth, professional, and accommodating to our questions and needs. The Studio itself was quaint, cozy, and the representation of the town of Alpine. Liz does a wonderful job of creating an atmosphere that is relaxing and educational at the same time. The Studio allows you to swim through Alpine's past and present with books, NPR radio schedule, maps of the area, suggestions of what to do and where to eat. All you need is within walking distance or a short drive across the tracks into the quaint and friendly town. If you can't find what you are looking for Liz is a phone call or text away to help.

The Alpine Studio is unique, but amenities you would find in a hotel and more are provided. The kitchen has enough space and workable room for small meals. The bathroom is a bit small, but it makes up in space elsewhere. The one con that should not go without being mentioned is the Amtrak train that is across the street from the Studio. The horn for the light sleeper is annoyingly loud, a nuisance for the heavy sleeper. Hard to get past, but need to share because it is part of the experience.

Please do not overlook this adorable property on your search though. Take some sleep aides with you and enjoy the Alpine Studio and the town of Alpine. We will certainly be back again!
