Kitchen and bathrooms are totally renovated with granite counters. High-end stainless steel appliances. Stone tiled bathroom with fabulous 'rainhead' shower and separate deep soaking tub. All new furnishings including Pottery Barn and antique pieces.

Enjoy your morning coffee and the incredible views from the balcony as the sun rises over historic Charleston. Look down to Judge Trott's cottage; - from the 1700s this is one of the oldest masonry buildings in Charleston; and next to that is the Old Powder Magazine. History is right on your doorstep! About John Hodgson

We had always wanted to visit Charleston and when our daughter decided to go to school in South Carolina we decided now is our chance. We fell in love with the city. So much history, great food, warm weather and friendly people. Originally from North Yorkshire, England, Charleston immediately felt like 'home' - the history, beautiful architecture and the 'small town' feeling was exactly like being back in Europe.

There were a few criteria when we started looking for a property...1) Downtown so we could walk everywhere... 2) New/renovated, we were not looking for a project to fix up; yet currently living in a 200 year old Cape we needed character and history! 3) outdoor living...this property has a great balcony that overlooks St Phillips. Perfect for breakfast as the sun rises; gorgeous spot to read after walking the historic streets; and fascinating to watch the horse and carriages and the folk exploring as we sip on a cocktail before dinner.

What a great spot Downtown. Easy access to South of Broad....lots of places to eat! The unit is in a Historic building and lots of space for a one bedroom property....great big master bathroom and balcony to overlook the city!

Notes:
Penthouse has great light. Balcony is enjoyable at all times of the day. Cannot stress enough how incredible this location is! Right in the heart of downtown Charleston. The church bells are beautiful - but they dont ring at night!

Perfect Location to explore

We visited during Restaurant Week and found the apartment was perfectly located for the city's restaurant scene. Excellent restaurants on East Bay St. (Pearlz and High Cotton were our favorites) and N. Market St. (Cru Cafe for lunch) were all within walking distance. The apartment is very comfortable - light, bright and airy and the outdoor terrace was an added bonus. Loved Charleston and loved the apartment. We'll be back next year.

A month is not long enough!!

85 Cumberland is exquisite, and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our month here. It truly felt like we were home. I can not stress enough how convenient everything is from this little slice of heaven. Beautifully appointed and decorated, and meticulously maintained and clean! Being awakened by the church bells was such a wonderful way to start our days and coffee out on the deck watching the Holy City come to life is amazing. We did cook in occasionally and the kitchen is really high quality. But do go out!!!! You're in the middle of it all. No need for a car, but oh wait.....you can park across the street! We highly recommend this unit, these owners, and of course Ginger. What a professional. We'd be back but looks like you're all booked up! Fabulous, hope you got my note in your book.

Good with Caveats

Location, ambiance and design all good. But do note: security deposit in April and now is $3,000, not $1,000 as this description says (in spite of my complaining about the misrepresentation); elevator breaks easily and if you break it, you pay for it. Most building residents walk as a result. Property Manager is excellent and available. You will sign 10+ pages of contract and pay for cleaning when you leave, receiving deposit back (minus any damages) in about 2 weeks.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying in our beautiful unit and commenting on the superb location, ambience and design. Charleston is a fabulous city and the stylish 'Penthouse' is right in the heart of it. We apologize for the confusion over the security deposit, contracts are flexible depending on length of stay. The elevator is inspected on a regular basis and if any repairs are needed they are done immediately. This is a historic building and the elevator is charming; there are clear instructions on how to close doors properly etc, to make sure that it runs smoothly. Glad you found Ginger so responsive - she is a fabulous property manager and represents our tenants and the unit with the utmost professionalism.... she is always there to help when needed.

Heart of downtown

Penthouse suite is totally amazing. I absolutely loved my month stay in this beautiful unit. Location could not be better - easy short stroll to historic homes and gardens 'South of Broad'; to multiple restaurants, King Street shopping is 2 minutes away, and the historic views from the balcony over Judge Trott's house, The Powder Magazine and one of the earliest churches in the city are just amazing. This condo is beautifully furnished, it has super modern kitchen and baths; yet has charming exposed brick walls and large old windows to take advantage of the ancient city views. Loved this place so much it has convinced me to buy my own little piece of Charleston! Highly recommend.
