About the property

House, 4 BR + Loft, 3 BA, Sleeps 12, 100 ft lakefront w/hard, sandy bottom, A/C

Built in 1996, this 2300 square foot Lake Leelanau house offers 100 feet of private frontage directly on the lake. Lake Leelanau is a 23 mile long, all-sports lake with crystal clear water, natural sandbars, and excellent walleye and smallmouth fishing.

'Merriweather' is located 30 feet from the water's edge with a greenspace that offers lots of natural privacy and attracts an assortment of birds. The lakefront area features a hard sand bottom with shallow water for wading and swimming.

A 75-foot aluminum dock has two 8-foot by 10-foot platforms - one at each end of the dock - which are great for viewing and participating in lake activities. Use of a 14-foot aluminum rowboat, canoe, kayak, oars and life preservers is included.

Sleeping areas, each with a full bath with a tub and/or shower, are on three levels of living. The master bedroom on the main level has a king bed and attached bathroom. The upstairs level has one bedroom with a queen bed and cot beds, and a separate loft with a double-sized futon. The upstairs level bedroom and loft share a bathroom with a shower. The basement has a bedroom with a queen bed and twin bunks. A bonus room in the walk-out basement has two twin beds, a sofa, and a kitchen table and chairs. The two rooms share a full bath.

The main floor has a fully equipped kitchen with snack bar. The open great room and dining room have sliding glass doors leading to the wrap-around deck which faces the lake.

The house is air conditioned.

Nestled across from rolling hills and cherry orchards (prime hiking areas), Merriweather is located within three miles of two public boat launches.

A short drive away are casinos, Lake Michigan, public beaches, the Crystal River, Sleeping Bear National Dunes, golf courses, excellent restaurants, shopping, wineries, art galleries, and Interlochen Arts Academy. Traverse City and Glen Arbor are within 25 miles; Leland and Suttons Bay are within six miles.

About Mary

We are retired educators who married 36 years ago and combined two households. We stored our extra pots, pans and dishes, hoping to get a cottage 'someday'. That 'someday' came less than one year later, when we bought our first cottage in downstate Michigan. After many wonderful summers with our children there, we started vacationing on Lake Leelanau and bought our property in 1996. Our children are grown now, with children of their own, but they still find time to vacation with us at Merriweather. We hope your family chooses to create Merriweather memories of their own.

Mary purchased this house in 1996

Why Mary chose Lake Leelanau

We love the Leelanau Peninsula! Where else are there hills and lakes, towns and farms, art festivals and Walleye contests, all in one location? A favorable climate, crystal clear lakes and streams, and great shopping in quaint harbor towns are what drew us to the peninsula in the first place. The variety of available activities far exceeds any other vacation area of its type. We bought on the Leelanau Peninsula because it is laid-back enough to get away from it all, yet close enough to civilization to enjoy fine restaurants, excellent wines and world-class concerts. The Cherry Capital Airport has daily jet service to many large cities.

What makes this house unique

Merriweather features sunrise views and shaded midday and evening relaxation. With its manicured lawn areas, as well as wild green spaces, it offers privacy for guests and a haven for a variety of birds. Great hiking opportunities are available across the street in the cherry orchards and the seasonal wooded roads. One of our favorite family activities is driving to Glen Arbor where we spend the afternoon climbing the Sleeping Bear Dunes, driving along the Pierce Stocking Drive, and looking out at Lake Michigan from a 450-foot high dune. We then shop at the Cherry Republic (retail store specializing in cherry-related products), eat dinner at the Boone Docks, and watch the sunset over Lake Michigan.

A Family Kind Of Place

  • 5 of 5

We tried this cottage after a decade at another down the lake. It is a crap shoot to select a location based on pictures on the VRBO site. This was a winner. The cottage is very nicely laid out and easily accommodates both indoor and outdoor activities. Since I rented it for my children and grandchildren to join us for our annual family vacation to Leelanau, a particularly outstanding feature is the shallow sandy bottom swimming area adjacent to the dock. A sandy bottom is not all that common on the lake. As it was relatively shallow for several feet out, it was perfect for the grandkids to romp and splash. If you came by at the right time, you might even spot me sitting in my lawn chair in the water, Mojito in hand. The bedrooms were great, and the cottage has all the appropriate amenities. We had the pleasure of meeting the owners at the conclusion of our week, and they are great to work with and very well organized. We hope to be annual visitors to this happy place.

We love the cottage. It is very clean and up to date. Fantastic deck looking over the lake. Great dock area and the lake is fantastic. The Leelanau area has plenty to do or you can just hang out peacefully at the cottage.

The perfect MI vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

We love this location so much we have stayed here for the last 10 years. The property owners are fantastic people and do everything they can to make sure you have an enjoyable stay. They always have a gift box waiting on the kitchen table with gems from the Cherry Republic. The house is extremely accommodating and with 3 levels the opportunity exists for privacy. The house is on the west side of the lake so generally the water is calmer and easier to fish. It is only a couple miles from the city of Lake Leelanau, which makes grocery and gas runs very convenient. Our favorite feature is the dock. We all spend many hours either sun bathing, fishing or watching the kids ski from the 2 landing areas of the dock. The shallow water near the shore has a sandy bottom which the kids love. If you want a relaxing and hassle free stay, Merriweather is the place to be.
