Quality apartment quietly situated in old centre of Ceret - 1st Floor Flat

Bedrooms 2
Half Baths1
Space 968 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 1 - 7 nights

1st Floor Flat

On the 1st floor of a 'Maison de Maitre', this apartment offers space and a traditional feel. The sitting room to the front of the building has a high moulded ceiling, large open fireplace and two sets of French windows onto decorative balconies over looking the tree-lined street. There are double doors into the dining room/kitchen, which is similar in feel and again has French windows. Both rooms are sunny in winter and shaded in summer when trees are in leaf. The bedrooms are situated quietly to the rear with a balcony running across the back of the house, overlooking the garden. The bathroom houses the laundry area, and is a good size. There is also a 'cabinet de toilette' en suite with the double bedroom. The floors throughout the flat are tiled with 'tommes Catalanes' traditional hexagonal earthenware tiles. The furniture is country French style. This is a place that feels cosy and secure if one wants to stay in, but is at the heart of everything whenever one wants to venture out.

About the property

Maison de Maitre Appartements

These lovely apartments are situated in a wide-built 19th C 'maison de maitre' (lawyer's house) shaded by towering plane trees within the heart of this sunny southern town with its narrow lanes and pretty squares. Great care has been given to make sure that both flats are well provided, comfortable and attractive. And, although so central, the house is situated in a quiet area only a few moments away from good bakeries, small shops, cafes, restaurants and charming bars - some open till the small hours. Saturday mornings sees the bustle of the colourful local market in the streets around. Stunning country walks just a couple of minutes away and a local lake for swimming a few minutes by car, with the sandy beaches of the Med about a half hour further. Find out more about the town, please see the Ceret Tourist Information website: most helpful and well illustrated.

SPAIN: The Spanish border is about 15 minutes motorway drive from Ceret, and just over it lies the border town of La Jonquera - the spot where truck drivers stop to have amazing lunches for next to nothing (and its the place to stock up on food at Spanish prices!). Between the border and Barcelona (about 2 hours away) stretches the Costa Brava, with many charming small bays, as well as the larger well known (and less attractive!) resorts. Particularly of note is Dali's home in the fishing village of Cadeques, and Empuries with its Greek and Roman archaeological sites and the prettiest little beaches imaginable. Inland, Girona is a lovely town with a beautiful old quarter and good shopping. Besalu is a stunning medieval jewel of a town with an amzing bridge spanning a ravine. Figueres has the fantastic Dali museum. Spanish wine, tapas, and of course, endless pottery!

Walking: Wonderful guided walks all year round organised by an experienced, charming and informative local guide will take you to places you may never get to on your own - into the mountains, by the sea or over the border into Spain. Some are half-day, and are graded from easy to 'sportif'. There are also full day walks, and even one to see the sun rise from the top of Canigou (local mountain). The weather is usually fabulous for walking through autumn, winter and spring, and, in summer, the heat is avoided by walking high in the mountains.

For those who prefer to plan their own walks, the area is outstanding and the local tourist office has a good guide leaflet for local walks!

About Wendy Wilmot

I am a Londoner, a semi-retired professional property manager and lettings agent, with a grown up family and 4 small grandchildren.

Wendy Wilmot purchased this apartment in 2002

Why Wendy Wilmot chose Céret

Having traveled extensively through France during various vacation and being a Francophile, I happened upon Céret one summer and loved the place. Having done all the wrong things: i.e. no research, no checking other properties, etc, I bought the 1st floor flat in a matter of weeks and I bought the ground floor (a total wreck that needed much work ) not long afterwards. I loved being near the mountains (but not in them), being a short drive from the Med and having Spain on my doorstep in one direction and the rest of France in the other. I enjoyed the market on Saturdays right outside the door and the relaxed, friendly feel of this sunny little Midi town. And, for a Londoner, I loved the feeling of space - a big sky and wild walks just a few paces away. Plus the nearby lake for swimming and the sea with its cliffs and beaches only a short drive away.

What makes this apartment unique

The 1st floor flat has lovely proportions and a really 'French' feel. I love standing by the French windows (3 sets with decorative balconies overlooking the road) watching the passers by, or, in spring and autumn particularly, sitting in a pool of sunlight with a book! The 1st floor balcony across the back of the house catches the last rays of the day and is a peaceful place for a drink.

The ground floor flat, which is more contemporary, is cool in summer and snug in winter. It also has a great kitchen with everything needed for serious cooking. The garden (ground floor flat only) with its shady terrace is a huge asset in the summer.

Seriously satisfying in Ceret !

  • 5 of 5

Extremely comfortable and spacious 2 bedroom apartment in this beautifully characterful 19th century town house in the heart of Ceret's old quarter. My wife and I (& granddaughter) have just spent a memorable week here and were thrilled with every last detail. Very clean and well-equipped + the friendly owner provides excellent notes on the many local things to see and do. Highly recommended.

Lovely apartments conveniently located in a magical town.

  • 5 of 5

We rented both the ground floor and first floor apartments as well as the ground floor studio for the month of March. We're writers who came to write in an inspiring setting, and we had a wonderful time. The apartments are well equipped and very comfortable. They're on a beautiful street lined with giant plane trees, close to the center of everything -- including the amazing Saturday market. What more can we say? We loved it all!

A writers dream, a painters view, and lots of walks surrounding. Quiet village except for the music nights and of course, market Saturdays!

We were very satisfied.

  • 4 of 5

We wanted to spend time in Ceret, France. We wanted to be in the city center. The location was perfect.

As with all buildings in the city center the building was historic and very old. However, the apartment

Was in excellent condition. It was exactly what we wanted and hoped for. Valery, the contact person, was

available and responsive.

an exiting and nice stay

  • 5 of 5

We had two nice weeks in Ceret. The flat is situated directly in the centre of Ceret, well equiped, clean and cosy. Wendy gave many helpful recomandations to spend the time in Ceret and the area around.

Ceret is a nice little town and a good starting point to enjoy the mountains of the Pyrennes, the Mediterranean Sea and the cultural hot spots of Katalonia.

We can warmly recommend a stay in this nice flat.

Great stay in Céret

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent some restful weeks in this beautiful and homely apartment. It is nicely done up and very spacious, even if you are staying in the flat with four adults. The kitchen is well equipped. We cooked quite often, ´cause you get good food in Céret. But also the restaurants there in town and in the surroundings are worth visiting. Céret and the Vallespir is a perfect place for hiking. The wonderful Côte Vermeille and the beaches are not far away, but if you just want a cooling you can also use the nice little public bath nearby. Highly recommended destinations are the monasteries Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa and Saint-Martin-de-Canigou and especially the Prieuré de Serrabona. You can do worse than travelling with the one-euro-busses to Perpignan or visiting the Byrrh-Caves in Thuir. All in all it was a great stay. We will surely book again.

This area is marvellous for walking or painting: autumn colour breathtaking, February mimosa is stunning and then wild flowers and cherries take over. Winter blue skies and Canigou dominate the horizon, dusted with snow 2/3 of the year. Summers are warm, languid and sunny. Together with the clarity of light, this must have given inspiration to Picasso, Dufy, Braque and many more when they lived and painted here. Ceret is a small country town of real charm and great trees; very relaxed, but with many 'fiestas' all year and there is nearly always music. There are good restaurants and cafe/bars. Saturdays see the fabulous street market, with an additional craft market on Tuesday evenings in summer. The Musee d'Arte Moderne in Ceret is a must. Stunning Colioure and the Med beaches only 1/2 hour drive and there are castles, fortified towns and archaeological sites to explore. Toulouse and Montpellier are 2 hours away, Carcassonne even less. Spanish Catalonia is on your doorstep with its enchanting bays. And Barcelona is temptingly only 2 hours away.

Other Activities: Painting. Bird watching. Castles to visit. Fabulous spas in the area.

Golf: The nearest golf course is a small 9-hole course at Amelie-les-Bains, about 15 mins drive down the valley. However, there is a much more impressive course, Falgos, about 45 minutes drive, which is a magnificent place perched high up with wonderful scenery and full spa facilities for those who do not wish to play. Please check out the Falgos website, ask us for link. Nearby golf courses just over the border in Spain.

Ski: Just two hours’ drive to the Cerdagne pistes: ideal for a day’s skiing.

North-facing Cambre d’Aze is perfect for beginners, with wide slopes and easy forest trails while for experienced skiers there are well-groomed challenges. A good cross-country trail runs between Cambre d’Aze and its sister resort St Pierre del Forcats.

Try Puigmal for a good variety of runs with stunning views to north and west. On the other side of the valley, sunny Font Romeu and Pyrénées 2000 at Bolquère link to give 54km of pistes, backed by 500 snow-cannons.

For Les Angles (making its name among boarders) and Formiguères, head north at Mont Louis, the highest fortified town in France. There’s another good cross-country trail down by the pretty lake.

Take another half hour to cross the Spanish border for La Molina (40 pistes/50km) or head towards Andorra (four hours from Céret) to Puymorens: 40km of pistes plus cross-country trails.

Prefer golf to skiing? Go try Snow Golf at Font Romeu!
