A superb 19c manor house with private pool set in a private garden & 4 gites with shared pool, most have wonderful views of La Roque St Christophe. The house accommodates 12 people in 6 bedrooms with 6 en-suite bathrooms. The 4 gites, totally separate from the main house, have all been renovated and furnished to the same level of comfort as the house and share a second swimming pool. The largest, The Tobacco Barn, sleeps 5/6 guests in 3 en-suite bedrooms. The 3 other spacious gites - the Hay Barn, Walnut Store and La Roque Terrace - are each designed for 2 people. Each unit is fully self-contained, with kitchen, lounge, bedroom and en-suite bathroom, and has a private terrace with outdoor dining and BBQ. Alternatively the house and 4 gites would be suitable for large groups of up to 24 people - perfect for parties and weddings. The property is five minutes walk from local restaurant and boulangerie and perfectly situated for all places of interest the Dordogne has to offer.

Le Moustier: Situated between Montignac, famous for the Lacaux cave paintings, and Les Eyzies with its many prehistoric sites, the small village of Le Moustier derives its name from the prehistoric Mousterian era due to an important skull find there. It has a restaurant, bar and a boulangerie and the house is only 5 minutes walk from the village. Les Granges placed on the side of the river Vezere opposite La Roque St Christophe, a limestone cliff face with caves carved into the rock which were inhabited for over 55,000 years from the prehistoric era to the middle ages when over 5,000 people lived on the site. These kilometre long caves are illuminated at night and make a spectacular view from the property.

The surrounding area: Many local towns offer traditional street markets. Montignac in particular hosts an excellent market twice a week, and nearby Rouffignac has a splendid Sunday morning market, where local farmers exhibit freshly picked vegetables, plump ducklings, fresh foie gras and enormous selections of local cheeses. The Perigord is a gourmets paradise and there are many excellent local restaurants offering the best of the areas cuisine.

The property is excellently placed for walking and cycling with all tracks well marked. There are plenty to choose from and range in severity from easy to strenuous!

Other local activities include canoeing on the Vezere or the Dordogne rivers, horse riding and tennis, golf, hot air ballooning and river cruises all within 30 - 40 minutes drive.

The Dordogne Region: The land of a thousand chateaux, the Dordogne or Perigord as it was known, is split into four regions named for their natural features. Noir(black) region of dense forests, Vert(green) spruce trees, Pourpre(purple) vines and Blanc(white) natural limestone. Due to its natural beauty and abundance of medieval towns, chateaux and villages, the Perigord Noir is the jewel in the crown of the Dordogne. The Vezere Valley, with its predominance of prehistoric sites, makes this region one of the most visited. The medieval towns of Sarlat, Les Eyzies and the vibrant city of Perigueux and many traditional villages, each with a character of their own, including Domme, Rocamador, Beynac, Le Roque Gageac, Montignac with the famous Lascaux caves, St Leon sur Vezere, makes the region a real sight seeing experience.

The main house at Le Manoir des Granges is a typical Perigordian farmhouse, built in 1889 in local golden sandstone, on three floors with a natural slate roof. It has been restored to a high standard whilst retaining many of its original features. The house is surrounded by mature, spacious gardens, with an orchard of fruit and local walnut trees.

It has a 12 x 5 metre swimming pool set in a private garden, fenced for safety and The area surrounding the pool is sunny with sun loungers, parasol's and a large walnut tree for shade.

Inside, there is a well equipped farmhouse kitchen with all necessities for those who love cooking. An electric double oven range style cooker with 5 burner gas hob, dishwasher, 2 fridges, a dining area which comfortably seats 12. Downstairs WC/cloakroom.

The lounge is comfortably furnished with stone fireplace for log fires, satellite English and French (freeview) TV, DVD player and Hi Fi and a library with a diverse range of both fiction and non-fiction

About Paul and Philippa Ward

We were both born, and grew up, in Leicester, England. We met in 1976, when Paul was working as a graphic designer and Philippa worked, in the same office, as a secretary. We moved to Leeds, West Yorkshire, later that same year because Paul was offered a new job. Philippa decided to train as a nurse and qualified in 1980.

Why Paul and Philippa Ward chose Dordogne

We came to the Dordogne with our daughters, Charlotte and Nicola, for some wonderful camping holidays and fell in love with the region. From that very first holiday we said that we would love to come and live here. We never expected to be able to realise our dream!

We especially loved the Vezere Valley and when we saw Le Manoir des Granges for sale on a website we arranged a viewing. It was the last of 4 properties; there was no competition! The location is amazing with view across to Roque Saint Christophe. A village with a lovely restaurant and a boulangerie in walking distance. Only 10 minutes drive to Montignac for the supermarket and market.

We love walking, cycling and birdwatching - we can do all of these in our free time!

What makes this house unique

Our property offers flexible accommodation for a variety of group sizes. From 2 people to 23 people. Accommodation for mobility impaired.

We are centrally located for visiting all the main sites of interest. Two swimming pools and all our bedrooms are en-suite.

Chic country home with pool

Three families together - hard to find comfortable accommodation for all - but Le Manoir came up trumps. Six bedrooms each ensuite and everything you need for a comfortable stay. Plenty of kitchen equipment and dining ware and if we needed something Philippa the owner was happy to loan it from her own things. In the height of summer we ate every meal outside and hardly used the lovely lounge but it's there if the weather turns. The kids walked to the boulangerie every morning for fresh bread and croissants. The five minute walk away restaurant had closed which was a disappointment but made us go further afield sharing the driving and finding some lovely eateries. Cycling, running and walking from the door - the road is a D road but never bothered us - and plenty to see and do within a reasonable radius. Philippa and Paul always on hand for advice on anything. Weather gorgeous and this gave us one of the few down sides - hot bedrooms at night - but plenty of electric fans on hand to help. The pool and table tennis table were well used and plenty of shade for reading and relaxing. Would we stay again? Yes!

We like to know that people have found their stay clean, comfortable and well equipped. During the summer the temperatures can be very high. Luckily we have shutters on nearly all of the windows of the main house which helps to keep the indoor temperature at a manageable level. The two mobile air conditioning units are perfect for using in the bedrooms on the second floor whilst, as you have said, the fans in the bedrooms on the first floor keep the temperature cool for a good nights sleep. Our new table tennis table has proved to be a big 'hit' with our guests this year; also our new pool cover which has improved the temperature of the water. We are always looking for new ways to improve the quality of our accommodation which is very often based on the feedback from our guests. The village restaurant, which has new owners who speak excellent English, German and French, is due to open on 12th October - only 2 weeks to wait! They will be doing new menu's every day, vegetarian options and a separate coffee/bar area too. Thank you again for taking the time to write a review.

Welcoming and very comfortable

Wonderful respite in the Dordogne region with Roque St Christophe within walking distance, bakery nearby and all other amenities a short drive. Property lacked for nothing, comfort and amenities were well supplied. Paul and Philippa were exceptional in answering all and any late minute questions, very knowledgeable and accommodating. Remember to keep 80 euros back for cleaning of property after your general pick up. Make sure your party do not use self tanners as this causes concern for cleaning of towels. Recommend this fabulous property and owners.

Great! Great! Great!

we are a family of 5 (children 15, 13 and 9). we were fortunate to stay at the main house and to enjoy the generous hospitality of Phillipa and Paul, the owners. the house itself is outstanding - still has the ambience of an old farm house built in late 19 century. the house features greatly equipped kitchen for small breakfast or fancy dinner - we did breakfast every morning and cooked two dinners with produce we picked at local markets. the rooms are specious, very clean and well equipped. the swimming pool is well maintained, with clear clean water (Paul maintains daily). the location is second to none - patisserie for your fresh baguette is 2 min drive in the nearby village, several good restaurants in St Leon, 5 min away, canoeing on the Vezere is around the corner, and so are many other "must see" destinations are within 30 min drive max.

the real treat is the genuine, generous, open and friendly hospitality of the owners - Phillipa and Paul. they were full of great and practical advices and went out of their way to address all our questions and requests. They are British, refreshingly fluent English spoken, which made directions, instructions and general communication flow easily. it was a great week for all of us and we are already planning our next stay. if you are heading to the Dordogne - this is where you need to stay! highly recommended!

All you will ever want or desire

There were seven of us who had met many years ago as members of a national association for single people. We often get together for self exploring holidays and took over Le Manoir for one week. A lovely charming property full of character. We did, very much, appreciate the en-suite facilities in every bedroom, the wi-fi, and the British TV channels. The property comes with its own private pool which was first class, and tables/chairs for alfresco dining which we took advantage of. There are loads of beautiful places to visit in the locality so no need for drivers to wear themselves out driving. The owners live on site and were always ready to give us helpful advice. There is one restaurant a few minutes walk away which also does lighter meals which we found handy after having a 3-course lunch. We tried one on a nearby camp site on our last night which surprised us because we expected a basic menu, but several of us ended up having blue shark! I really liked the Dordogne and if I go again I wouldn't bother to look for anywhere else to stay.

Outstanding Gite with a View

My wife and I stayed 4 nights in late March 2015 in the Gite facing the cliffs of La Rogue St. Christopher. We had a wonderful stay for so early in the season. Paul and Philippa graciously helped us narrow down the sites to see, markets to visit and places to eat resulting in a great short vacation in the Dordogne. The Gite was clean, comfortable, well appointed and quiet. The views of the cliffs were impressive, especially when they were lit up at night. We would gladly stay here again on a future trip to the region.

Dreams can come true !!

We had dreamed of a quiet Gite, sun glinting off a pool, surrounded by historic villages, lazy rivers and pastoral French scenes .We were taking our Golden Retriever on her first trip abroad so needed space and dog friendly owners , and we hoped to meet some nice folk along the way .

We stayed at the Haybarn in early September. The accommodation is a lovely converted farm outbuilding within the grounds of Le Manoir des Granges ,a delightful old manor farm set amongst open fields and fruit trees. Owners Philippa and Paul ,were everything good hosts aspire to be . Their thoughtful approach to each of their guests has to be experienced to be fully appreciated , for they have time for everyone and know just when to offer advice , conversation or privacy ,that only comes with experience. As an old saying goes, we arrived as strangers but left as friends.

Our stay was very comfortable , the Haybarn’s bed has set new standards for holiday comfort, and the Gite has everything we could have wanted and more. The pool is kept spotless and we could mix with the other guests as we chose around the barbeque and pergola .

There are beautiful walks from the Gite , up into wooded hills, down along the banks of the river Vezere or into the hamlet of Peyzac Le Moustier for the morning collection of Baguette or Croissant .

Every day we found a new restaurant to try, another Chateau to visit or a walk to explore ,all within a very short drive from our Gite. The Haybarn offered such a warm welcome that we ventured out early to try and get back to spend more time sitting in the gardens, soaking up the afternoon sun and chatting with the other guests . By the end of our week we were loath to leave and have pledged to return for a longer stay next time.

From reading this you would be forgiven to think we are related to Philippa and Paul , but read all the other reviews and you will come to the same conclusion, they add all of their lucky guests to their growing family of admirers and they collect the praise well deserved after giving us all the holidays we have dreamed of.

Les Granges is situated in Le Moustier near to Montignac and the beautiful village of St Leon sur Vezere. Close to Lascaux caves, the towns of Sarlat, Beynac, Domme and Perigueux. Directly opposite is La Roque St Christophe, the site of a small Bastide town dating back 55,000 years and inhabited up to the 16th century. This kilometre long cave carved into the rock thousands of years ago, is lit up at night and makes a spectacular view from the property. There are many historic sites dating back to Prehistoric times, caves, grottos, cave paintings, all situated in the most beautiful countryside. This area has been made famous by Jean Auel's Earth's Children books. The sixth and latest one, Land of Painted Caves, was published in 2011. Many of our customers come to stay to see the area linked to these books.

The Perigord is noted also for its gastronomy, foie gras, truffles, confit de canard, wild mushrooms and walnuts! We are surrounded by pretty villages, all with markets at least once a week, giving our renters the opportunity to experiment with the local produce. As well as walking, cycling, canoeing and golf there is a Budhist centre and a Hammam very close so you can either be active or relax!

Golf: There are four 18 hole courses and three 9 hole courses in the Perigord region. Most are between 35minutes and one hours drive from our property, others are slightly further but well worth the drive!
