I'm a native Texan from Fort Worth. I currently live in Spring, which is north of Houston.
Robin Cavaliero purchased this house in 1991
On one of many trips to Galveston we saw this property and envisioned ourselves retiring here. We're not quite there yet, but we love the neighborhood and especially the neighbors, and we enjoy visiting any chance we get.
We fell in love with the front porches, it's wonderful to sit outside on a cool breezy night.
My fiance and I visited Galveston and stayed in the Alley House in 2013
and loved it so much we came back this summer and stayed in the Four
Palms. We love the relaxing atmosphere and are planning on coming back
before the end of summer for one last hurrah. Love it and recommend it
to anyone looking for a unique, intimate, and relaxing Galveston
So my initial impression of Galveston was formed long ago by trips to the beaches along the Sea wall. Even as Texas beaches go, they aren't great. And being much younger, I let that affect my overall impression of the island. What I haven't appreciated until I was older, however, was the history, and this place offers a part of that. A beautiful Victorian home in great condition, near enough to all of the fun stuff to keep drives short. If you hear "historic" and think "stuffy" and "pretentious," you'll be surprised - the decor is a great mix of old and new. The size is perfect for four people, might be a little cramped for six and any more isnt recommended. The whole house sets up well as a home base for excursions to east and Stewart beaches, the strand, moody gardens and the sea wall. The AC works well if a little loud, nice bath accommodations especially if you like to take baths. Great kitchen for prepping beach trips and a nice dining area. And if I had paid attention to the listing, I would have known I didn't need to bring beach chairs. Only complaints were seating in the living area - two chairs could well be replaced by a love seat or couch - and there being only two rolls of toilet paper when we arrived (shit happens). I guess you could also use the presence of a tub downstairs as a negative, there being only one shower on the house (and it being quite small).
On a final good note: the owner seems very organized and communicates last minute important information well - a ceiling fan wasn't working and we were promptly informed of the problem. I was easily able to get a hold of her so I imagine I would have had her attention in the event of an emergency (if there had been one).
So to wrap up - Galveston beaches still leave a lot to be desired in my opinion, but the city offers a lot more in terms of history and accommodations that makes it a great attraction. Think New Orleans with a beach.... I'd go again.
We loved the overall character of this house... there is no way staying in a hotel/motel could compare, even in Galveston, TX! We will definitely be back!
Robin's house was perfect for what we needed. Very clean and well kept. We cooked breakfast one day and had everything we needed for that.
We will definitely use the house again when we're in Galveston next.
We came to this beautifully restored historic home for a mini vacation. All the amenities we needed were readily available and the location was perfect. Robin was such a pleasure to work with and always available. We cannot wait for our next stay.
We enjoyed our stay here very much. The house is beautiful and very interesting. We had three adults and three children and we enjoyed having the room to spread out. It was an added bonus having two nice bathrooms. We were in town for a wedding and this property is very close to the Lyceum where the wedding events were held. We felt comfortable and safe, and the property is only a few blocks from the sea wall. The location is great.
The stairs to the second floor are pretty steep so that's something to consider since both bedrooms are on the second floor. We have a child with a disability so she and I stayed on the first floor on the fold out couch and it was a great arrangement for us. Just something to keep in mind when you are deciding who will sleep where. We really thought this house was comfortable and attractive and so full of history. The location could not be better for seeing the sites of Galveston.
We were all very comfortable. We would have loved a place to hang clothes in the bedroom with the queen and twin bed. Kind of minor, but we also wished there were tissue boxes throughout the house (summer allergies). Overall, the house met our needs and was an enjoyable place to stay for the weekend.
Centrally located between the Gulf and the Historic Strand Entertainment District.
