About the property

Small Island with 2 Living Spaces. Sleeps 8. Views.!! Available July - Aug.

Tremolo Island is an acre sized gem that has been in our family for over 40 years. The name 'Tremolo' means: call of the loon. It is a rustic and quiet place, an island. It is a place where time slows way down and where weather comes directly at you from the lake. Although we offer Wifi and a DVD player along with electricity, hot and cold running water, Tremolo Island is a place to read, look for wildlife, sit and watch the water, get out your binoculars, canoe, and let go of time constraints. And, you are reliant on a boat for getting on and off the island. If that's what you are looking for, Tremolo Island is for you!

The main house is open concept with large picture windows and sliding glass doors facing the lake. By open concept we mean no doors. The bunk house at the back of the island offers a separate space for privacy. A wrap-around deck, built just a few feet from the water, lets you take in all the moods of this unique setting. Sunsets are spectacular! The main house sleeps 4 comfortably with a bedroom downstairs and a spiral staircase leading up to the sleeping loft that has railings for safety. There is a queen size bed in the sleeping loft and a pull-out mattress for another 2 if needed. The house is complete with a full kitchen, hot and cold running water, electricity, television with a DVD hook-up and WiFi access. There is a wood stove in the center of the first floor living space. The stove can be used with permission from the owners. The bathroom is newly painted and has an easy-to-use composting toilet. The cozy bunk house is situated at the back of the island and sleeps another 2 comfortably. There are another 2 flat areas where tents could be, and have been, set up. Wooden walkways wind throughout the island for easy access. Although the island is small, it has many sweet and private spots to retreat to: a flower garden in the center of the island, a picnic area and fire pit near the bunk house, a mossy bed facing the cove and a hammock near the front of the island. There is a canoe for exploring the lake by water, one of the best ways of exploring Sand Lake. Otters, herons, loons, osprey, beavers, geese and ducks are a few of the inhabitants you might encounter as you glide along in the canoe or as you sit on the deck, reading or simply relaxing. Elgin, Ontario is the closest small town and it has a grocery store, a hardware store, library, fine wines and spirits store and post office. Wendy's Farm Stand is just 10 minutes from Elgin and offers all kinds of organic vegetables, meats and cheeses.

Pets are welcome on Tremolo Island, dogs particularly.

Tremolo is a perfect place for family and/or groups.

You will need a boat....obviously. If you already have one, the best thing to do is put in at Sand Lake Marine, run by the Glover family. They are super friendly and will let you park one car for free, the other car, $30.00 a week. They have petrol, oil and they run a small shop for incidentals.

If you need to rent a boat, here are a couple of Boat Rental Establishments to call: Westport Village Rental, Big Rideau Lake Boat Rentals, Scotty's and Coolbreeze in Westport. Scotty's will deliver boats to the location you are putting in. There is also a campground on Sand Lake called Battam's. They have small outboard motor boats for rent. They aren't powerful boats but they do the job of getting around. You can also call one of the Boat Rental establishments and ask about seasonal rates and special deals. The longer you rent, the better the deal. Once you have set up the rental and can tell us where you will be putting in, we will provide a map for getting to the island. It is VERY easy. The Glover's can also provide directions to the island. Lots of folks that live up there year round are friendly and always willing to help.

Please contact us for payment options.

About Carol A. Ortlip

I am Carol, the oldest of 6 six sisters, one of the owners of Tremolo Island. When our mother passed away in 2008, we inherited Tremolo Island. It was previously called Meow Island.....our mother loved cats. My sisters and I have been going up to the island since we were kids, nigh on 30 years now. I live in New Hampshire so I am the closest to the island and can get there more often than my sisters so I share the property management with my sister, Katie. We rendezvous on Tremolo every chance we get. Since I am a Special Educator, I have particular times when I can make the relatively short trip up. Tremolo Island is a magical place, one that lets all cares and worries slip away for a time. We feel extremely lucky to be able to offer it to others. It isn't very far from New York City (we grew up in Fort Lee, New Jersey by the way) or Boston. Once you are on the island, a cold glass of wine in your hand, the water and the loons singing to you, believe me, you will know what true peace and tranquility feel like.

Carol A. Ortlip purchased this house in 1970

Why Carol A. Ortlip chose Elgin

Our parents found Tremolo Island on a trip to the Thousand Island region. At first we all slept in tents or on the small houseboat our parents owned. Over time, they decided to move to Canada permanently and to build a home. Our mother designed the house and local tradesmen built it. My sisters and I have been going up to the island since we were young, very young. The memories live on and so does our absolute love of Tremolo.

What makes this house unique

Tremolo Island is an island.....for a week or two or more, it can be YOUR island. Whether you are there by yourself (which I was last year for over a month! Heaven!) or you are there with your family, (including your dogs) being on an island is unique. It is peaceful and exciting at the same time. Your experience of time will alter. You will be on Tremolo time. Everything slows down; sitting and watching the lake as it shifts from morning to afternoon to evening will become a full-time activity. You will want and need nothing more. If you want to rent for longer than a week, we offer a significant discount. Inquire for details. And, this is a fisherman's dream! The best fishing right off the back of the island! Guaranteed!

If you want to explore the mainland, there are some local attractions such as Rock Dunder, a great hike to a spectacular over-look of the Rideau. An hour away is the quaint, artsy town of Merrickville with restaurants and a spa. The Hotel Kenney has an ice cream shop and it is 5 minutes from Sand Lake Marina. By boat, it is almost imperative that you get to a lock, such as Chaffee's or Davis Lock to see how they work. You can also get to them by car. Wendy's Farm Stand is a must. Lots of organic veggies as well as organically raised meats, home-made pies and jams, cheeses, butter and spreads. Family run and owned.

A Canadian Cottage Experience Worth Repeating

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful island, very peaceful, nice place to swim, boat and canoe. Loved the time we spent there. The cottage was a bit old but comfortable and well taken care of. The views and light are really special.

The owner could not have been nicer. She was super friendly and helpful and left great directions to local attractions. Cruising the Rideau Canal and local locks in the boat was a lot of fun. Heard lots of loons, fish nibbled our toes when we went swimming and canoeing - a Canadian cottage experience at its best. Definitely a place to return to.

wonderfull for being close to nature and water

  • 4 of 5

We had a pleasant stay in Tremolo : calm and heartbreaking landscape in a house where you live next to nature and love it if you do not expect a high level of comfort. The sand lake and more widely the Rideau canal are worth being explored.

Even with all the rain, this is the most beautiful and peaceful place--wildlife all around, and not a care in the world! We are going back!

We will do what we can to take your suggestions for improving Tremolo Island while maintaining its rustic feel. Looking forward to having you back again next year!

Excellent value!

  • 5 of 5

Most relaxing vacation ever, excellent value especially if you are a dog lover... This place is dog heaven. Despite the temperature at home.... In our case 34c ... This island is cool! Beautiful breeze made for lazy days and fabulous sleeping.

Great swimming, fresh clear water, first 20 feet are a little painful (Stoney bottom)

The cottage is everything that a cottage should be rustic, cosy and inviting. It has everything. We have already rebooked for next year... That pretty much says it all. I've paid a lot more for previous rentals and never found this level of peace, quiet and comfort. Awesome Value.

Tranquil and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

The island was easy to get to from the marina and was set at the quieter end of the lake system. This is an older cottage which had been thoughtfully laid out. Windows on 3 sides gave great views of the water all around and the view across the lake is perfect. For us two and the dog the cottage was not too big as to feel uncomfortable. The weather for our week wasn't great and we had just set up the wood burner and was looking forward to sitting by the fire when the weather improved :-) We loved being able to let our dog have the freedom of the island without worry. The outside space was amazing, lots of little 'rooms' to sit and read, great walkways criss cross the island. Deck outside the main house, dinner table al fresco, separate concrete dock to swim off, small garden to sit in, trail to the fire pit, all very well thought out. A great place if you are looking for peace and quiet to unwind. Carol was the perfect host, she was readily available to answer questions by email if they arose. A very happy holiday.

Perfect Escape

  • 5 of 5

I spent 2 weeks on Tremolo and wished I didn't have to go! It is one of the most peaceful places I have ever been. Between the constant sound of the lake waters and the cries of the loons I felt I was in a hypnotic state. And the lake has the best water I have ever swam in- perfect temp and very clear and soft. I am really looking forward to spending more time there! K. Hume/ Ashland, OR.

Tremolo Island is situated in the beautiful Rideau Lakes Region of Ontario, a vacation destination for travelers from all over the world. You can get to Ottawa, the stunning capital of Ontario, by boat. The Rideau is a series of locks that connect lakes, each one unique with its own 'personality'. Sand Lake is one of the smallest of the lakes with lovely soft water and a primarily sandy bottom. Great for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and exploring.
