A recent guest described 'Serenity' as 'a small NYC loft transplanted to a mountain paradise garden.

It is our great pleasure to make this very cool compound available to you.

Everything you need in a base camp fully supporting your Taos adventure.

Experience serenity, or peace of mind, here in your own elegant private separate building surrounded by lovely mountain views and extensive flower gardens.

Located in a small, historic farm / ranch neighborhood ('Talpa') just off the road from Santa Fe, about fifteen minutes south of downtown. We're at a kind of node or hub in Taos which puts us about equidistant between Taos Ski Valley to the north, Angel Fire and Sipapu to the east and southeast. (About 20-30 minutes weather permitting.)

Which is great for the all seasons. All three of those ski resort roads (588, 64 and 518) just happen to pass through some of the most gorgeous mountain country you ever saw. Right off these same roads are numerous access trailheads: easy gateways winter sports plus hiking, biking, fishing, or just river rambling under the pines.

The space itself:

One of its best features, among many, is its flexibility. It offers both spaciousness and intimacy. The studio provides a roomy comfortable communal area and the adjacent kitchen with its big tables doubles for not only food prep but rec room (Monopoly? Art projects?) And the loft works for getting away from everybody as well as for superlative sleeping, especially on rainy nights.

Up to six people can enjoy sweet mountain dreams with choice of standard queen mattress downstairs, new convertible couch (with memory foam) in loft upstairs, or on the pull-out couch. Extra blankets, pillows at hand. Aerobed twin-size inflatables available. Foam jigsaw-style 'dojo' mats snap together for your morning stretch. Ample privacy curtains.

Loft is easily accessible via Doug's beautiful hand-built stairs and is a powerful kid magnet. Also is a romantic hideaway with beautiful views of Taos Mountain and the surrounding foothills.

Or it's just a good place to check your email. If you insist.

1300 square feet hand-built by owners from ground up. Major renovations completed in 2013, making it 100% custom. You won't find a cabin like this anywhere else in the world.

Relax, breathe deep, spread out inside an open space design with high ceilings and big sunny windows. Plenty of room to lay out your gear: Play - work - scheme - dream.

Lean, green, dander and odor-free. No pesticides or herbicides used inside, outside or anywhere else on the property. No scented cleaning or "freshening" products, fabric softeners or industrial chemicals. No need to stray far from soap, water, vinegar and an occasional drop or two of essential oils. It's relatively sparse and clear, no "poof" for miles. Big windows open wide.

A word on Pets: many people travel with their beloved 4-leggeds, we understand. But we believe that many other people value a dander-free, non-allergenic space. We offer an immaculate sleeping / working / cooking / entertaining arena; this is a major amenity.

Having said that, you should know that we are owned by two house cats in the yard. You'll probably see them around.

Other features:

Reliable Wi-Fi. Also, "smart" DVD setup with monitor and a binder full of movies to borrow. Bring your Netflix password along with your devices. No cable. Movie rental store just around the corner with guest arrangements possible.

Utility room with full-sized HE washer/drier, wooden drying rack for parkas etc, hanging rod, bedding shelving. Ironing board and iron available upon request.

Beverage Center offers complimentary coffee, tea, soups, snacks.

Pure well water (not on city water): no fluoride or chlorine.

Pure mountain air. Dark starry skies.

Quiet. Except for birdsong. Occasional traffic.

Privacy absolutely honored. Upon your arrival we activate a special force field around your compound: You Shall Not be Disturbed. Not by nobody nohow.

All-season covered portal around two sides with garden and mountain views. You can smoke outside if you like, absolutely not indoors.

We the owners live and work here on these 1.5 acres full-time, have been here since April Fool's Day 1996. We raised our two sons here, now ages 31 and 27.

Farm Kitchen: 600 sq. ft. of modern, full-sized appliances, artfully-painted concrete floors, wooden country dining table. Great for entertaining family, friends, clients. Quite an amazing room, actually. Cooks will immediately recognize its goodness.

One lovely Labor day we enjoyed a full weekend of food preparation with two of our guests. Together we bottled (and sampled) a new apple / plum wine blend, processed a burlap bag of fresh-roasted chiles, and cranked up a batch of peach ice cream from peaches just picked from one of our trees just off the kitchen door.

Nothing dissolves barriers between strangers faster than peeling hot green chile on a hot August afternoon!.

You don't HAVE to cook in the Kitchen. We recycle a lot of take-out boxes. Why cook when you can pick up a delectable breakfast burrito with your coffee, just down the street? You're on vacation, right? You're also in Taos, NM, Restaurant Heaven. We enjoy playing the concierge role, and recommend a lot of restaurants to a lot of people, but we're realizing that it mostly doesn't matter where you go eat, it will be delicious.

Outdoors: extensive edible landscaping, trees, grass lawns and perennial flower borders offer one of the most beautiful hidden gardens in Taos. Or so we modestly claim. Wander and enjoy.

We grow most of the fruit that will grow here: apples, cherries, peaches, pears, plums, apricots, grapes, currants, chokecherries and elderberries. Have been known to add yeast and sugar with the fruit in a bucket to use up the bounty.

It should be said that our gardens aren't really playgrounds. Most of it is working for a living. We also grow a lot of rocks along with the snowball viburnum and tomatoes, watch your step out there. "Manicured" is not the word. However, our lovely front lawn beckons a blanket, and bare feet delight in the wooly thyme out back. For active kids needing to move: take them into the mountains or a river, just down the road! We provide many pages of suggestions for the many places kids can run, climb, swim, skate, play frisbee golf: check the House Guestbook or the Hospitality Manager app. or ask.

If you're here between March and October, you'll have a chance to be among the fortunate few to experience a genuine colonial-era irrigation system called the "acequia" (ah say key ah). It's what makes it possible for Serenity to be such an oasis here in this high mountain desert country.

Originally from West Texas (El Paso and San Angelo,) lived many years throughout East Coast (New York, Maryland, North Carolina) before returning to native bioregion of Texas / New Mexico.

We live on site, working as video producers, photographers, writers, and developers of alternative energy projects.

We honeymooned in Taos in November, 1981. We could have saved a lot of time and money if we had just stayed here instead of returning to Dallas. We finally arrived 'home' on April Fool's Day 1996. This property started as a rental, we made it our own a year later and have been working on it ever since.

What makes this house unique

Lots of space indoors and out. Great for groups. Green and non-toxic. Farm Kitchen. Homemade wine. Fertile land with water rights growing a huge variety of edibles and flowers, surrounded by mountains, close enough to downtown.

Exciting Kitchen and Happy times

We are a family of 5 that just spent a wonderful week on the property, relaxing and cooking after skiing in nearby Sippapu and Taos sky Valley.

The property had everything we needed and our hosts Theresa and Doug were very helpful giving recommendations and making sure we had a great time.

Kitchen was marvelous, we spend the majority of the time there cooking and playing board and card games and having coffee, wine and hot chocolate with plenty of themes for conversation after a day on the slopes.

We really enjoyed the few days and The kids were happy staying on the Loft area, no complaints at all, and we will return next season.

A personal tour by Theresa upon arrival, everything was very neat a clean.

We woke up early, skied hard, and returned after dark. Everything you could need was provided, snacks, coffees, open floor plan with plenty of room to spread out. After 14 hours on the road, it sure was nice to lounge around with room for all. Even had a guitar, and tuner for some late night guitar playing. Everything was clean and well kept, and the owners are very personable and a pleasure to talk to. Hope you enjoyed our home grown Texas pecans!!! Until next time, the Smotek's Holland, Texas.

A wonderful winter vacation!

My husband and I wanted to get away for a few days before Christmas so we headed to Taos and stayed at Theresa and Doug's spacious and comfortable studio. Since we live in Texas and hardly ever see snow, we hoped for snow and Taos delivered the most gorgeous slow snowfall for a day and night! The family made us feel like family and couldn't have been warmer and helpful. The spacious better than restaurant quality dream kitchen was a huge plus! It was equipped with more than we could ever need! We cooked several meals there! We would love to return in summer or fall to enjoy the flowers on the one acre premises. Thank you Doug, Theresa, and son Travis for your awesome hospitality!

Beautiful and serene!

Theresa and Doug were amazing hosts! The kitchen was huge and beautiful! The home was fully stocked with items you'd normally have at home (and more). Drawers were labeled for easy access of needed items. Beds were comfortable. The yard was beautifully landscaped with flowers, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, etc. the guest house front porch was made comfy and home-like with a hammock and other seating. It was perfectly beautiful and relaxing after a day of hiking. Theresa stayed up late to welcome us and show us around the home. We loved it and will likely return!

Green and Delightful Oasis in Taos!

We were enchanted to start our summer vacation in Teresa’s and Doug’s guesthouse. Located in Taos’ city limits, their verdant property offers majestic views over the surrounding mountains and Teresa’s natural southwest garden is the perfect location for morning coffee ( way after sunrise !) lazy afternoon tea or evening cocktail. The guest house is spacious, welcoming, well-decorated and fully equipped. The «professional style » kitchen makes you almost want to start cooking instead of exploring Taos. Teresa and Doug are wonderful, warm and charming hosts: they are always available if you have questions . We are already recommending this delightful place to friends and family who would like to visit Taos and its rich cultural environment.

Casita Grande Maravillosa

The description of this property on your site is dead on accurate To actually experience it as you walk from your car to the unit and on into the inside of the living area and magnificent kitchen is another story. It is spectacular. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Taos area. We had some early risers and later risers and were a little uncertain how the openness of it all would work for us. No problem. The huge kitchen space with the farm table and large stainless steel work space has a French door with two curtains to separate it out from the rest of the unit and provide quiet and darkness for those still sleeping. No problem turning on the lights and starting the day in there. Plenty of plugs to have coffee, make breakfast, check the internet, or read while others are sleeping or in the evening for those who go to bed earlier. There is even a separate kitchen door to the outside so you can walk around to the porch and sit without turning on lights in the "living/sleeping" part of the casita. We arrived on a rainy afternoon and decided to pick some apples after checking with Theresa and to make an apple tart while waiting for the rain to stop. This space was perfect as it rained for the next 24 hours and we had plenty to keep us busy inside with all the offerings made available by Theresa and Douglas. How special for us to have found this gem in Taos.

We're in a small rural neighborhood on a maintained county dirt road easily accessible to the two main roads heading into town.

You're within 15 minutes of everything you could desire, from hiking to shopping to fine dining to museums.

A full-service fitness spa is just around the corner and they accept guests for a small fee.

Some of the best restaurants, bars, coffee shops, galleries and antique stores are at this south end of town. We even have our own plaza including the famous St. Francis de Assis' cathedral, one of the oldest and most-painted/photographed in the state.

Because you're in a rural area, instead of right in the middle of the crowds and traffic of downtown, you can more readily experience the beauty of Taos and our blessed 4-season lifestyle in peace and harmony.
