About the property

Go Back In Time To The 50's Where Life Was Slower And More Simple.

Cottage End is a roomy, family vacation house I built for my children and their children. As a lifelong wood worker, I've tried to fill the house with cherry and maple cabinets and ash floors with cherry accents, and exposed rafters under the cypress ceilings.

We're located on a narrow dirt road that has Clark Sound for a backdrop. We're on a dead end street so we have very little and very slow traffic.

Cottage End has three bedrooms, each with it's own bathroom and a half bath in the laundry room. The house sleeps 8 people comfortably. The master bedroom has a king bed. The two upstairs bedrooms each have a queen bed and a twin bed. One of the upstairs bedrooms also has a full size baby bed. One of my favorite things at Cottage End is the kitchen. With cherry cabinets all around, the large island contains the gas range and the island has seating on two sides. Cooking shrimp and grits while my family and friends around the island enjoying a glass of wine and conversation is my idea of a good time. We also have a screened porch in the rear. WIFI is available.

We're located on James Island and it's 12 minutes to Folly Beach and 14 minutes to downtown Charleston. Also, we're less than 10 minutes from James Island County Park where there are walking/biking trails, a climbing wall, dog park, and water park that the kids love. Also, there is a free water spray park for the little kids.

In considering renting my home, please be aware that I do not allow any parties, receptions, or other events that brings in multiple people and vehicles. My parking is limited and the neighbors do not appreciate large, loud events on this quiet street.

About Miller Putnam

I am a retired General Contractor from Greenville, SC and my family has always loved Charleston. My brother was born there during the war years. So, I have many ties to Charleston. I built Cottage End for my two boy's families where I have 5 grandchildren.

Miller Putnam purchased this house in 2000

Why Miller Putnam chose Charleston

My family loves Charleston but we experienced the 'condo in the resort' type life-style and it was not for us. When my friend of 30 years offered to sell me a lot across the street from him, I took him up on it. We spent 3 years building Cottage End.

What makes this house unique

The location is unique in that there is still only a narrow, sandy, dirt street, it is not even graveled. And, the location, sitting on Clark Sound, is a perfect example of of the tidal wetlands that are so prevalent along the South Carolina coast. One can have a different view hourly as the tide comes in and out. Charleston can have tides that rise more than 7 feet.

Our little road with maybe only 20 houses on it will take you back to the 1950's with it's look and pace of life.

630072 - Cottage End, A Low-country Island House

Dear David, We want to thank you for the wonderful experience we had while in Charleston. It was so nice having a home to return to at the end of the day where we could relax and visit with each other. The house is amazing and well furnished with everything we needed so we could cook if we wanted and located near many excellent restaurants. Your neighbor is sweet and gave us some excellent recommendations. The manual you sent us was detailed and easy to follow. The house is beautiful and the location to the water perfect. It is easy to navigate and not far from downtown Charleston. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Our Family loved it

  • 5 of 5

This was the most perfect location. 10 minutes from the beach and 10 minutes from downtown. Even better if you have children you are only a few minutes from this awesome play place with climbing water parks and playgrounds! Miller, if you see this, we left my daughter favorite blanket in the crib upstairs and a sippy cup in the dishwasher. Our friend lives close and can come by and grab it!!

Excellent property

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful, well appointed home with some excellent woodwork. Fifteen minutes from downtown, but definitely 'out of town'.

We enjoyed relaxing here at Cottage End as much as exploring Chareslton. Plenty of unique, local places to eat, plenty to do nearby. I would definitely stay here again.

Well appointed house in quiet location near the water

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Putnam family house on James Island. The house is tucked in under the trees on a quiet road across the street from a stunning bay view. We had everything we needed and more: a fully equipped kitchen with seating around the granite counter island stove, comfortable sitting areas on both floors, a downstairs corner equipped with books and an art table for kids, attractive art and decor and comfortable beds. The house is custom built, full of detailed carpentry and design. Charleston proper is a short drive away, so we were able to walk extensively in its historic district, taking advantage of some fine dining in town. The owner has been very helpful, and our visit went without a hitch. Highly recommended.

Quiet location, comfortable spacious home

  • 4 of 5

We were a family of 5 adults visiting Charleston for the first time. The Cottage End was perfect for us. Everyone had their own bedroom and bathroom ( a must if you are older!). The beds were comfortable and the living room and kitchen were spacious. Everything was exactly as described and pictured on the website. The house is located within easy driving distance to every place we had on our list to see. We had one question upon arrival which the owner promptly took care of. We were very satisfied with our accommodations and would recommend this house to anyone visiting the Charleston area.

Excellent place to stay

  • 5 of 5

In September 2016, I had the pleasure of staying in this home while spending 4 days in Charleston.

I would recommend this rental to anyone planning a trip to Charleston. It is a beautiful home with all the comforts of home.

If I vacation in Charleston in the future, I would not hesitate to stay here again.
