About the Property

Private room and bath in small historic house close to town and river

Lovely bedroom with standard size double bed, handmade quilt, writing desk, wi-fi and a/c, private bathroom in a small antique central chimney New Englander being lovingly restored by scholar/playwright in the neighborly South End of Newburyport.

Perfect 1 to 3 night get-away for one or two adults. 3 night maximum stay. Walk downtown, bike to the ocean.

Allergy sufferers and people with physical challenges: two cats live in the house. Very steep, ship-like spiral wooden stairs lead to the guest room.

We provide: shampoo and conditioner, bath gel, hair dryer, bed linens and towels, use of fridge. Tasteful and healthy cold breakfast of yogurt, fruit, pastry, coffee, tea, and juice.

Perfect location nestled between downtown Newburyport & Plum Island. Meander the winding streets to the shops, farmer’s market, Irish pub, award-winning restaurants, live community theater, indy cinema, Maritime Museum, art galleries, yoga studios. Summer months offer free movies and concerts on the waterfront, boardwalk, Eco tours, deep sea fishing, and whale watching. Winter months offer natural delights like snowy owls, eagles, and seals on the Merrimac River and winter birds outside the kitchen window.

Launch your kayak at the bottom of the street at Joppa Flats or just sit on the bench and watch the sun set over the marsh and the moon rise over the river.

Convenient: Train station is 1 1/2 miles away; bus station is 3 miles away. Downtown Newburyport is a 10 minute walk from the house.

Ideal for writers, artists, photographers, nature lovers, romantics, and meanderers.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 1999

About the owner: I grew up in the Berkshire Hills where Melville wrote Moby Dick. I moved to Newburyport to finish my dissertation on Emerson, write plays, and to restore this old house. As I researched the history while uncovering layers of remodeling, the house's story began to unfold.

Why the Owner Chose Newburyport, MA, USA:
Newburyport is enchanting, interesting, and inspiring. The South End, historically, was bustling with mariners, sailmakers, blacksmiths, woodcarvers and shipwrights. Today it is filled with artists, writers, teachers, and families of mixed generations. In between, the Industrial Revolution brought factories that have since been transformed into shops, restaurants, and housing in the beautiful old brick buildings. And then there's the ocean, the river, the marshes, the birds, the skies.... Forty miles south and you're in Boston. Thirty minutes north and you're in Portsmouth, NH. I bought this house because it was creaky, crooked, neglected, and unappreciated. Its beauty was hidden and I wanted to uncover it. And having been built at the dawn of the American Revolution, I knew it had a story. This house and town have character meant to be shared.
