About Nancy Haverington

I grew up in the Berkshire Hills where Melville wrote Moby Dick. I moved to Newburyport to finish my dissertation on Emerson, write plays, and to restore this old house. As I researched the history while uncovering layers of remodeling, the house's story began to unfold.

Nancy Haverington purchased this house in 1999

Why Nancy Haverington chose North of Boston & Greater Merrimack Valley

Newburyport is enchanting, interesting, and inspiring. The South End, historically, was bustling with mariners, sailmakers, blacksmiths, woodcarvers and shipwrights. Today it is filled with artists, writers, teachers, and families of mixed generations. In between, the Industrial Revolution brought factories that have since been transformed into shops, restaurants, and housing in the beautiful old brick buildings.

And then there's the ocean, the river, the marshes, the birds, the skies....

Forty miles south and you're in Boston. Thirty minutes north and you're in Portsmouth, NH.

I bought this house because it was creaky, crooked, neglected, and unappreciated. Its beauty was hidden and I wanted to uncover it. And having been built at the dawn of the American Revolution, I knew it had a story. This house and town have character meant to be shared.

Guestbook comments from the owner

These are the ideal guests that you hope for: warm, open, friendly, and respectful. They were interesting themselves and interested in the history of the house and the restoration process. We are grateful to have met them and would welcome them back in a heartbeat.

Memorable stay!

  • 5 of 5

So happy to have found this charming place so close to everything. The bedroom was spacious and comfortable, and there was a good supply of plush towels in the lovely bathroom. Breakfast was a real treat! Nancy is such a gracious host, we felt very much at home. We only wished we could have stayed longer!

Clean and charming

  • 5 of 5

I went to Newbury port with my friend without knowing anything about the place. And our vacation was perfect: our room at the bed and breakfast was charming and really clean. Our host is amazing and you are close to everything by wall. Thank you Nancy for letting us stay in your beautiful fairytale house :)

Like a Visit to a Dear Friend

  • 5 of 5

I'm doing this against my better judgement because I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Nancy and her warm hospitality and lovely home, and I am afraid it will be booked when my wife and I want to stay there again when we visit our son, who lives in Newburyport. Nancy is a most gracious and accommodating hostess; her house is equipped like a 4-star hotel; her breakfasts are huge, nutritious and delicious; the location is super convenient to whatever you likely want to do in Newburyport (which is definitely worth a visit); and her cats are friendly. As noted, she has two cats, so if you're allergic, bring medicine; and as advertised, the bedroom is up a steep and narrow spiral staircase, so if you're infirm, think twice, and even if you're not, don't bring a large suitcase. Otherwise, by all means book this delightful establishment. But, please, not when we want to stay there again.

This is the place!

  • 5 of 5

This is the place if you want a New England experience instead of a vanilla hotel! Nancy and Jude are one of the highlights of staying here. The location works great for in-town and out-of-town activities. I'm so glad I stayed in Newburyport instead of the other towns in the Essex area.

Relaxed and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

Nancy is an easy-going and gracious hostess. An afternoon cup of tea with homemade cookies set the tone for our entire stay. Our room was clean, comfortable and spacious. The gardens are peaceful, quiet and relaxing. It is an easy walk into town for shopping, sightseeing and dining and a 5 minute drive to the beach. Her breakfast table is a delight! I agree 100% with all the 5-star reviews given here and echo the reviewers' sentiments. I would not hesitate to stay at the 1775 Mariner's House again.

We recently stayed one night to attend a party at Plum Island. The location was perfect. Only a mile or two to our destination and close to town.

The house was tucked in a cute neighborhood full of colonial homes. Nancy was very accommodating and friendly. The room and bathroom were comfortable and well stocked. It was a very hot, humid day and she had it nice and cool for us with the AC. Breakfast was delicious. Granola and Yogurt, Fresh baked muffins. Kitchen was darling looking out onto English Garden. I would not hesitate to stay here again. Very peaceful and relaxing.
