About Nancy Haverington

I grew up in the Berkshire Hills where Melville wrote Moby Dick. I moved to Newburyport to finish my dissertation on Emerson, write plays, and to restore this old house. As I researched the history while uncovering layers of remodeling, the house's story began to unfold.

Nancy Haverington purchased this house in 1999

Why Nancy Haverington chose Newburyport

Newburyport is enchanting, interesting, and inspiring. The South End, historically, was bustling with mariners, sailmakers, blacksmiths, woodcarvers and shipwrights. Today it is filled with artists, writers, teachers, and families of mixed generations. In between, the Industrial Revolution brought factories that have since been transformed into shops, restaurants, and housing in the beautiful old brick buildings.

And then there's the ocean, the river, the marshes, the birds, the skies....

Forty miles south and you're in Boston. Thirty minutes north and you're in Portsmouth, NH.

I bought this house because it was creaky, crooked, neglected, and unappreciated. Its beauty was hidden and I wanted to uncover it. And having been built at the dawn of the American Revolution, I knew it had a story. This house and town have character meant to be shared.

Guestbook comments from the owner

These are the ideal guests that you hope for: warm, open, friendly, and respectful. They were interesting themselves and interested in the history of the house and the restoration process. We are grateful to have met them and would welcome them back in a heartbeat.

Memorable stay!

  • 5 of 5

So happy to have found this charming place so close to everything. The bedroom was spacious and comfortable, and there was a good supply of plush towels in the lovely bathroom. Breakfast was a real treat! Nancy is such a gracious host, we felt very much at home. We only wished we could have stayed longer!

Welcoming and Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

What the reviews do not mention in detail is that you are staying with Nancy. She greets you with freshly baked cookies. Makes sure you have all you need and goes to her area of the house. Out of sight but there if you need anything. She is fascinating!!

Her house is historic and comfortable. Very clean.

In the morning before your day begins, Nancy makes you breakfast. Felt as if I was staying with a friend I had not seen in years. I hope to return soon. Location is great too.

Loved it !

  • 5 of 5

First and foremost, Nancy is a wonderful host. She welcomed us with fresh baked cookies and a brief tour of her historic house built in 1775. The room is at the top of a steep winding staircase, with a bathroom and shower across the hall. it is beautifully decorated and the bed was super comfortable, we actually slept in the next morning. When we did rouse in the morning, Nancy had an incredible breakfast prepared with Parfaits, fresh warm Pumpkin bread, coffee and juice all beautifully arranged in the dining nook with views of her really cool gardens. We had a fantastic breakfast and chat with Nancy then headed on our way. This was our first time in a B&B and Nancy made it a warm, welcome, and delightful experience. We will definitely stay again if we come back to the area. Thank you sincerely to Nancy, Jude, Mackenzie, and Raste for your hospitality and kindness !

unique, peaceful, pleasant, cozy, friendly...

  • 5 of 5

...are some of the words to describe Nancy's place, tucked away in an old quiet neighborhood on the southside of Newburyport, heading to Plum Island. For us this was perfect placement for a couple of days spent adventuring at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Nancy's colonial home was a nice part of that adventure. Nancy was a very gracious host as well. Breakfast in the morning was a special surprise.
