Peter Perkins, a native of New England, is a geologist, teacher, writer and artist. Drawn to the challenge of any task at hand, and finding great satisfaction in a job well done, Peter can be found always on the move at the Casa, roaming the landscape in search of new ways to innovate and create in this peaceful and whimsical place.
The Casa del Campo is truly a statement, and an encouraging example, of what imagination and risk-taking can lead one to in turning just an old house into a kitschy and vibrant home.
Peter Perkins purchased this studio in 2003
Ten years ago Peter Perkins and Catherine Ione-Perkins came upon their present day home, the Casa del Campo--a diamond in the rough located at the end of a quiet country lane near Grass Valley, California. Comprised of a main house, a guest house and a variety of out buildings, set on several acres featuring open spaces and old growth forest, the property had the bones of greatness--it just needed some loving and purposeful attention. With the creative inspiration of a brilliant local craftsman, the willingness to learn and innovate, and no small amount of artistic vision on their part, Peter and Catherine undertook the process of transforming the houses and land, room by room, yard by yard, into a unique and exciting testimony to what is possible with sincere good intention. Still a work in progress, the Casa is a vibrant canvas, constantly evolving--a spiritual place of positive energy, a fun and relaxing place to rest and plan each day.
This was our first stay with Peter and Catherine in the Casita Mexicana. Our hosts were wonderfully attentive as we explored the beautiful grounds. We enjoyed both the outdoor and indoor beauty that was enhanced by all of the hand crafted art that they have created. Every need was taken care of during our stay. We would definitely recommend Case del Campo to others.
Casa del Campo is a beautiful place to stay. Peter and Catherine are lovely people who take care of every detail and are always attentive in every moment. Casa del Campo is full of art, natural art and hand crafted art, Where you can be and enjoy yourself and nature, being alone or in company. For us it has been a complete discovery and we are enormously grateful for the time we stayed and the friends we did.
I've had the opportunity to stay with Peter and Catherine on two occasion now -- once in the Casita Mexicana and once in the main house. Ordinarily, I'm leery of Bed and Breakfast stays. I'm not sure I'm going to have the privacy I want and/or I'm not sure how awkward interacting with the hosts will be. Nothing to worry about here. In both instances, I was afforded as little or as much privacy and interaction as I wanted. Having said that, I can't emphasize enough how easygoing and friendly Peter and Catherine are and, of course, the real hosts (their dogs Boo and Marley) are a delight.
The property is very fun, with a colorful, creative, and whimsical look to the rooms. I ended up taking a number of pictures, just to remember how much fun the rooms are. Besides being colorful and fun, the rooms are extremely comfortable, with Peter and Catherine having thought of everything. The beds are comfortable and I got a good night's sleep in both venues. The Casita Mexicana has a full kitchen, sitting area, well-designed and stocked bathroom, accessible TV, and nice views. The property is visually fun, with a meditation hut and larger screened-in sitting area. It's fun just to walk around the property to see what visual delight may be awaiting you. Viewing wildlife on the property is just an added bonus.
I can't say enough about how fun and gracious Peter and Catherine are. Exceptionally easy to talk to and very aware of how much or how little interaction you'd like to have. After asking our preferences the night before, they had yogurt with nuts, fruits, etc. available, along with bagels and cream cheese. And, of course, coffee and tea were always available. My hosts were an excellent reference about places to eat and places of interest in the community.
In short, I plan on staying here again and I would recommend others staying here without reservation. You'll have a fun, friendly, relaxed stay in a comfortable, clean, quiet, and well-decorated room. These, frankly, have been the best Bed and Breakfast stays I've experienced. Enjoy!
My wife, daughter and I feel truly blessed that we were able to stay with Peter and Catherine during our recent trip back to California. The studio and the grounds were exquisite-- the owners' creativity and attention to detail was evident everywhere. More importantly to us, however, both Peter and Catherine were much more than simply gracious hosts. They were generous with their time and knowledge and were particularly great with our 8 year-old daughter. They were wonderful neighbors in every sense of the word.
My recent stay at Casa Del Campo Casita was beyond extraordinary! Peter, Catherine and their two dogs Boo and Marley imminently welcomed us with a friendly invite and tour around our casita, grounds and their home.
The Mexicana unit was cozy, clean and peaceful. It had all the amenities of home with lots of personal touches like homemade soap and fresh flowers. It just so happened that it rained most of the 4 days we visited and Peter and Catherine let us borrow umbrellas and rain jackets. The friendly assistance was top notch - You can’t get this level of service staying at a hotel!
There is a fantastic restaurant near by called Diego’s. Ask Peter and Catherine, they’ll tell you all you want to know about great places to eat, see and do during your visit.
I didn’t want my stay to end, they have created a lovely home and guest casitas. I would happily recommend Casa Del Campo as a place to stay. Staying here is an experience!
Much Gratitude for Everything during our stay!
First off would like to thank Peter and Cathrine for there warm welcome and welcoming us to the "CASA". From the moment we got there till the moment we left we fell in love with them and the property. If you want a clean and relaxing getaway this is your place, you have to stop by and check it out for yourselves and you will feel exactly why this place is magically and soooooooo relaxing. Peter and Cathrine care so much about there home and what they have created you feel it right away. All the rooms are so clean and hand furnished to make your experience warm and relaxing. When you get there you feel so far away from your daily life it will completely re-charge your battery. They will do anything to make it the best time for you or friends and family. The homemade gronola and locally roasted coffee is the perfect way too start your day each morning. This is the first time my wife and I went and it won't be the last time either. They are amazing people and glad to call them friends after just 2 days. Please go and stay for yourselves and you won't be disappointed. Such a great time :)
