Ellen Pearson purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Ellen Pearson chose Takoma Park

I chose Takoma Park for it's unique flavor and proximity to Washington D.C. This house is also unique. It has lots of charm and space and the double lot gives us privacy and more room for gardening.

I love the neighborhood. Takoma Park is funky and friendly. There is a real community feel. It's like living in a small town in the middle of a big city.

The property is located on 1/3 of an acre, which is large for being so close to the city. The house is set back from the street and gives the traveler more privacy and quiet. The gardens are lovely.

What makes this apartment unique

Whether traveling for vacation, work, college visits, or family in the area Oakdale has many unique benefits. Sligo Creek Park is only a couple of blocks away and has playgrounds and great hike/bike trails. There are a couple of other neighborhood parks within a block or two. There are Bike Share stations in several locations. The house is charming, built in 1936 but has been updated with modern features.

AMAZING EXPERIENCE/STAY IN TAKOMA PARK

  • 5 of 5

As a travel nurse, housing is one of the important things that can either make or break a contract experience. After much research on various websites (Home Away, Airbnb, etc), I found this beautifully charming private one bedroom location in Takoma Park. The land lady Ellen was friendly and accommodating during my 13 week stay.

The property itself is gorgeous with a nice sized kitchen, living room with board games provided and books for reading, a nice tv with cable, and great internet. The bedroom was wonderful with two spacious closets, comfortable bed, and dressers. I had more than enough space for me and when a friend or family would visit. The bathroom was a great size and the shower was perfect.

Location wise could not have been happier. It was on a peaceful spot in Takoma Park but close enough to walk to the nearby restaurants and get groceries and do laundry just blocks away made it very convienent. It was also close to the metro line or a reasonable priced uber or lyft ride into D.C. to enjoy the museums, restaurants, and various activities. Great safe, family friendly neighborhood. Never felt uncomfortable jogging or walking around Takoma and was always greeted by friendly neighbors and smiles.

I would come back to this location and stay at Ellen's property if ever in the area again. It was one of the best experiences I have had as a travel nurse.

Beautiful property, wonderful land lady, great location, great price for where you are and the amenities provided. Separate entrance to the private one bedroom unit. Perfect space for someone staying for work, couples looking for a romantic D.C. experience, or families wanting to enjoy the area.

I could not recommend Ellen's property highly enough. I created memories there I will never forget and highly encourage anyone looking for a rental to book this place as soon as possible.

Apartment was MUCH better than staying at a hotel!

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was as advertised, clean and stocked with the 'normal stuff' I would expect at a hotel such as an iron, hair dryer, soap, shampoo, etc. Convenient 30 minute drive to all the Washington DC tourist attractions. The owner was very nice and kept us informed on check-in check-out process (this was our first VRBO rental). Nice quite downtown with good local restaurants if you want to get away from DC.

Nice place with a few issues

  • 4 of 5

Two of us spent four nights at this basement one bedroom apartment. It was comfortable and well equipped. The trundle/daybed in the living room was fine for sleeping but as the only place to sit to read or watch tv it was less than ideal. Metal folding chairs were provided as well as a couple of wooden counter height chairs but again not much use as comfortable seating.

The kitchen had everything we needed and was neat and clean.

The place was way too far from the metro station to walk there, especially as the area is a bit hilly. Ellen did mention that a bus runs in that direction but we had a car so just drove to DC to sightsee.

A couple of items that could be easily remedied: we were never able to get the tv to work for television so watched Netflix via the Roku device. Perhaps it was user error but better instructions might help. Mildew in the shower could be easily taken care of with some Tilex or bleach. And the last criticism was the biggest- the shower was terrible! The mixing valve only produced cold water or scalding water at a drizzle- definitely in need of attention!!!

Ellen was a good hostess - very pleasant, informative and available.
