About Bret Vance

The owners of this historic Austin property are Texans who have called Austin home since 1975.

Bret Vance purchased this house in 1990

Why Bret Vance chose Austin

It was a natural! It is old Austin charm, built in 1922, in an ideal location. Austin has changed of course, but it is fun to muse over the site of downtown from a '1922 vantage point.' There is an excellent view of the current downtown, which can be seen across the Colorado River that runs in front of the property, also known as Town Lake.

What makes this house unique

After the initial appeal of the Victorian look of the property, the owners fell in love with the front

porch and the spiral stairs on the back of the main house. A huge plus was separate dwellings that could be used for family gatherings.

An oak tree on the back of the property---quite spectacular---is estimated to be 300 to 400 years

old.

The location seems private, remote, and isolated---however, it is within five minutes of downtown and the capitol, within 10 minutes to UT and St. Ed's, within walking distance of South Congress (SoCo) and Austin's trails as well as multiple venues on the lake, and within 10 minutes of the Formula 1 race track. It is truly at the heart of Austin!

Awesome Location

  • 5 of 5

We had a family-and-friends get together in Austin for the 4th of July weekend and stayed at this house. It was perfect. Everything in the house worked great, including the air conditioning which was a huge life saver being the 4th of the July and all. Many bedrooms with many sleeping options also came in handy for our large group. The location of the house is incredible - probably the best you'll find out there. The owner was also extremely responsive via txt, phone calls, and e-mails.

Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

My family meets up once a year in different states each year and this year we chose Austin TX. We loved our reunion this year. Everything was so great from the location to the hospitality. The home was perfect for us and we were able to walk to so many places from there, some of us took the bus and roamed around the beautiful city. I'm definitely recommending this home to anyone that wants to visit Austin. The home itself is full of history, everything in it is original, the sleeping arrangements were great and they even had an air mattress for us. We ended up cooking the majority of our meals which saved us a ton of money and it felt like we were all back under the same roof, felt like old times. I hope we vote on Austin again so we can come back and finish exploring the city.

Beautiful home, WONDERFUL location

  • 5 of 5

Me and a group of friends from California flew to Austin for ACL and were lucky enough to stay in this charming home. We were able to walk to Congress in about 10 minutes, and if we needed to go anywhere else, we got an uber that hardly costed anything! We didn't need to rent a car for the trip, which saved us an exponential amount of money (more money to spend at ACL!). All of the rooms were extremely clean and beautifully furnished. There were more than enough beds for us to sleep in, and the hosts made sure we knew were all of the extra blankets were placed in case we needed them. There was also a washer and a dryer for us to use (although we didn't end up needing it). Fast wi-fi, a HUGE cable TV, and a kitchen full of enough dishes and supplies to cook with were also huge perks. For the great price and great location, we will definitely be coming back next year. Overall a great experience!

If you appreciate cleanliness; this is NOT for you

  • 1 of 5

Old; not well maintained (inside or outside). There was no broom; two rooms have no ventilation (so they were very hot!), the shower in one of the bathrooms wouldn't turn off, the house was filled with mosquitos, water bugs, etc; and overall the house is not well maintained. I reached out to the property manager and owner 5 to 6 times and did not hear back until I finally got someone on the phone the morning of checkout! Worst experience ever.

Owner's Response: This is just not true. They did not try to contact us to fix anything and there have never been mosquitoes or water bugs. Please disregard this review as it is an outright lie.

Great place for our weekend girls getaway

  • 5 of 5

We hosted a girls weekend getaway here last weekend and had a wonderful time. The house was very comfortable, spacious and ideal for 12 women. Everything was within a 10-minute drive of where we needed to be. The weekend itself was extremely cold for us (in the 30's and 40's) and had some issues with heating the house when we arrived (the fireplace is a little tricky) but the manager was super responsive by phone. Overall though, for the price and location this was a wonderful place to stay. Will definitely book here again for my next trip to Austin.

Comfortable and Relaxing Experience

  • 5 of 5

Lovely victorian house with a nice and clean interior. The river is right across the street, ample amount of parking, downtown within walking/biking distance (there's also a bus stop right on the corner), the fenced in backyard was great for the kids. Super comfortable environment, quiet area, it was fully stocked with everything we could have needed as far as house amenities go (especially the full size washer and dryer which came in super handy a few times). The property manager was incredibly attentive and very easy to work with. All in all, we had a really great experience staying here and plan to stay again next year!
