About Donald Oliver

Sandra and Don have raised 4 children and have 2 granddaughters. Sandra is a minister with the United Church of Christ in New Haven, and Don is a professor at Wesleyan University. Don discovered Acadia and the island at age 16 as an National Science Foundation student at Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, and we have been coming back ever since with children and now grandchildren in tow. One of our passions is hiking throughout the world. Acadia with its superb beauty and vast set of trails offers unparalleled hiking opportunities.

Donald Oliver purchased this house in 2014

Why Donald Oliver chose Mount Desert Island

Everyone should have a special place in this world: a wellspring to draw strength from, and which rejuvenates them. Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island is that place for us, and we want you to see and experience it first hand.

What makes this house unique

Moving beyond the limitations of Acadia cottages, we decided to buy a larger modern, private house and equip it with all the comforts and conveniences of home to provide a superior vacation experience for the whole family. The property is also ideally located: 2 miles from the Hull’s cove (main entrance) to Acadia National Park and 4 miles from downtown Bar Harbor. You can walk 5 minutes down our quiet road to Frenchman’s Bay or pick up the Island Explorer (free) bus and go anywhere on the Island without driving. The latter option is great for those long one-way hikes or bike rides across the island.

Close to Acadia and Mt. Desert Island. Lovely clean home that is well equipped kitchen.

The cottage was private with woods out the back door where we would have dinner at the picnic table after grilling and watch the deer. We bought cherry stones from a nearby fisherman and just enjoyed what Bar Harbor had to offer. Wonderful cottage and well organized! Thank You!

The house was equipped with everything. It included, central air/heat, full kitchen, dishwasher, 3 full bathrooms, plenty of beds, towels, soap, washer with laundry detergent, dryer, toilet paper, paper towel, coffee filters, oil to cook with, extra pillows & blankets, brochures & directions to check out the town, & many more :) You'll love it. The manager, Mr. Oliver responds quickly.

Owner's Response: We are gratified that Judy and her extended family had a great stay at Mayapple Cottage, which we meticulously maintain for our guests. In the interests of full disclosure, there is no central AC system, but we have window fans to welcome in the cool night air. We are located a few hundred yards from Frenchman's Bay; Downeast coastal Maine does provide her own cooling system.

The perfect location to see Acadia

  • 5 of 5

We had a great long weekend at Mayapple Cottage despite one rainy and one very windy day. The location just north of Bar Harbor is perfect for getting into the NP and close enough to town to ride bikes. There was plenty of space for our group of 4 adults and 4 teenagers. Because of the girl/boy mix, we ended up putting an air mattress for one of the boys in the den area on the second floor which worked out well. Well stocked kitchen and lots of cups and plates for our group, and the open dining/kitchen/living area was great to gather in the evening. I look forward to coming back again during the summer months!

Wonderful experience.

  • 5 of 5

Five of us from New Jersey spent a very relaxing and enjoyable week at this home. The house was very clean, neat and well appointed. It was very convenient to Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor and several other local activities that we enjoyed during our stay. Since it was just a short walk down the street to Frenchman's Bay, we also enjoyed the sunrise very early in the morning. We would highly recommend staying at this home and hopefully, one day we will return again.

Mayapple Cottage - Bar Harbor

  • 4 of 5

Spent one week at the home and had a wonderful time! Ample room for 8 adults. Well-stocked kitchen and linens. Easy access to Bar Harbor and Acadia. Great wireless connection. The shoreline is just a short walk away and we were able to see the northern lights one night. Traffic from nearby Hwy 3 could be heard during the day but was not a problem at night. A backyard fire pit would be a great addition. Had to buy extra toilet paper by the second day. Would definitely recommend this property!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review, we are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. FYI there are always 2 extra rolls of toilet paper underneath the sink vanity in each of the 3 bathrooms as our Welcome Letter on the Dining Room table makes clear. Often there are additional paper goods on the shelf unit in the basement.

Great Stay at Mayapple Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Mayapple Cottage was great. The property is well maintained and close to the Park Loop Road and Bar Harbor. It has a well-appointed kitchen and enough space for people to spread out and not be on top of each other. It was very quiet at night. The only improvement I can think of is to add ceiling fans especially to the upstairs bedrooms. The weather was warm when we were there and the house was a bit stuffy. Overall a great place to stay.

Owner's Response: We will get our electrician to install some ceiling fans in the upstairs bedrooms next season, since some guests prefer them over the box and pedestal fans that we currently provide.

Acadia National Park with its spectacular scenery and extensive system of trails for hiking and carriage roads for nature walks, biking, or horse-drawn carriages is a must. Be sure to check out the summit of Cadillac mountain, and Jordan Pond house with its blueberry popovers. Drive the Park loop road or walk the Shore Path past Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and Otter Cliffs for unforgettable images that dance in your heart. Canoe in Long Pond, or sea kayak to the Porcupine Islands in Frenchman's Bay. Take the kids to pristine Sand Beach or go for a swim at Echo lake. Shop and dine out in Bar Harbor or visit other cute shops in Northeast or Southwest Harbors. In the latter location be sure to pick up a fresh pita, smoothy or home-baked dessert at Eat-A-Pita. Take a Nature cruise or whale watch out of Bar Harbor or Southwest Harbor and see puffins, eagles, seals, whales, and more. And of course no visit to the Maine shore is complete without that lobster. We have described these activities and more in our 'Must-do' notebook in our living room.
