Gorgeous, romantic and peaceful fully appointed and luxurious 3bd/3bath private log home near dorset with front porch and 2 rear decks (one with hot tub!) with beautiful gardens, river and creeks, forest and meadows. Can sleep 6 (additional charge for more) there's 3 proper bedrooms plus a sleeping loft all with queen sized beds.
The front door opens to a grand, high ceiling, light filled great room, with its generous living room with 2 couches, wood stove, dining area and well appointed kitchen are all in one space. So whomever’s cooking still gets to enjoy the views, the light, the vermont castings wood stove crackling and the company of the other guests. There’s the Master bedroom and bath that opens off the great room, upstairs to a 2nd bedroom and full bathroom and extra sleeping loft/library. down in the basement is the tv den, and off that is bedroom 3, the music room (basement is fully exposed in rear, so there's 2 windows in the basement bedroom, you won't feel like you're in a basement!)
The house is full of great books, records and a DVD/VHS collection for your use. (There’s no cable or satellite hookup, but there is wifi if you’d like to stream your favorite shows on your laptop, and I can point you in the direction of sports bars if there’s a game you’d like to watch). There’s yoga mats and props for those who wish to practice on their vacation. Additionally, I’m a former professional chef - so Memorial Day til Columbus Day if my schedule allows, I can provide full B&B service for an additional charge, and stock the fridge with food and snacks and make you one truly excellent meal per day (your choice for when and what).
This is my real life home, (though I've cleared all drawers and surfaces for you) and it is decidedly not child-proofed and I mostly will not be available to put my breakables and valuables out of reach. The wood stove is exposed to curious hands, the upstairs loft is open with just a small railing separating. So it may not be the best choice for visitors with very small children. I can recommend other great choices nearby if you message me.
Interaction with Guests
I live most of the year in New Orleans, so outside of email and phone calls if you need something, from Oct 1 - May 20th I won't be personally available to greet you. There's contacts for the housekeeper and a handyman and some emergencies (though of course, contact me first if you just have a question). Summer and early Fall I will likely be staying in a summer shack in the back acres of the property across the river, and can be as available or not as you'd like. I do need to take care of the garden some if you're there for more than a few days in the summer. You will reap the benefits of any seasonal bounty in the way of fresh cut flowers, herbs and vegetables!
This corner of southern Vermont is a locavore’s paradise. Award winning cheese farm, Consider Bardwell, is just up the road – stop by, play with the goats and stock up on truly amazing goat and cow cheese. Raw milk and eggs and excellent pies are available at the farm next door (Wayward Goose). There’s great farmer’s markets all year round, stock up on grain fed, organic eggs, meat and poultry, other excellent local cheeses and seasonal vegetables and fruits. There’s apple and berry picking in season all round as well. (And a ton of berries on the rail trail and apples on my 3 apple trees in season). For restaurants, shopping, activities outside the house -Saratoga Springs is an hour away, Dorset is 20 minutes distance, Manchester is 30 minutes away. Stratton/Bromley ski areas are about 50 minutes drive.
Other Things to Note
All appliances - dishwasher, hot tub, washer/dryer. in addition - wifi, national free long distance calling via land line (your cell likely won't work there), and a few sets of x-country skis (mostly ranging from Men's 8 1/2 to men's 10 1/2. sorry - big footed family!)
I’m a professional musician and writer. There’s no piano in the house, though there likely will be by mid summer. If an artist, musician or writer would like to come up solo for a creative retreat, message me privately and we’ll work something out. It’s a great place to create. I’ll even hide the internet router so you’re not tempted to distraction. The walls are all wood, everything you sing sounds great in there.
Please no smoking inside the house. No pets. Be kind to my books, records, vintage kitchen implements etc.
My wife and I enjoyed the busy bird feeders visible through the living room windows, the front porch overlooking pastures and gardens, practicing yoga on the deck overlooking a stream in the woods, the comfortable furniture, and the hot tub. The home is a short walk to a rail to trail that passes through woodland and wetland habitats; fun birdwatching and lovely wildflowers in August. The home was clean, the kitchen well equipped, plenty of water pressure, good wi-fi. No cell coverage for Verizon. The owner was communicative and friendly throughout.
My wife and I stayed here in April for our birthdays and just to get away. We both work full time and this was the perfect way to unwind. We have never felt as comfortable staying at a rental as we did here. The place is kept very clean and the home is very inviting. It is a wonderful place to cook meals. We enjoyed it so much we cooked all our meals here listening to music or the wonderful river behind the cabin. The location is very private and has a fantastic setup on the back side. One deck with a table and chairs where we enjoyed morning coffee listening to the river and the other deck which is covered and houses the fantastic hot tub. We spent a lot of time there. At night you could look out and see amazing stars. More so than at home since light pollution is far less in this area. Dayna, My wife and I thank you for sharing this place with us. Anyone would enjoy it.
Dayna was wonderful and so was her home. We are so happy that she chooses to rent out her home to vacationers. Her home is away from it all, yet, close enough to all kinds of wonderful places. If you love nature then you have found the perfect spot. The river out back is creek-like in sound and sight. Perfect for exploring and listening to at night with the windows open. Their are many feathered friends. her gardens are lovely. Many destinations are an easy ride or even a day trip away.
Our kids (young men) had a great time just going down to the footbridge. The place is great for older kids! There's Wi-Fi, a great selections of movies and music, and good old fresh air. Each bedroom in her home is on a different floor, so, they each had their own space. Works very well for teenagers!
Read Dayna's book on arrival. It includes information about the local farms where you can get cheeses, veggies, pies...oh my...the pie. It was heaven.
We are looking forward to staying again....soon!
The cabin was beautiful. Very clean and spacious (it was just my wife and I for our trip, but the place could definitely fit a family of 4-6 comfortably). There are plenty of kitchen tools and even a grill! The home is set back off the road a bit which is perfect for the feeling of seclusion (very few cars even travel down the road to begin with). Relaxing to the sound of the creek in our private woods surrounded hot tub was certainly the highlight. Also, the front yard is nearly tree free - perfect for laying out and stargazing without any light pollution (we both commented on how we have never seen so many stars before in our lives).
As Dayna notes, part of the year she lives elsewhere. Despite being away when we visited, she was a great host! I'd imagine she is even better when she's present. Her directions on everything were incredibly helpful. I will say that there aren't really any grocery stores close by, but before we departed, Dayna gave plenty of information on what options there were and how to find them.
Overall, a great home, a great host, a great weekend.
We spent the last week of March in this beautiful cabin and enjoyed every minute of it! The cabin was so clean when we arrived that we immediately kicked off our shoes and started our VERY relaxing week. We were welcomed with a note from the housekeeper accompanied by a nice bottle of wine.
The cabin is both spacious and cozy, and very tastefully appointed. The kitchen is easy to cook in and well stocked with a variety of cookware, plates, cups, silverware, wine glasses, etc. It is located far enough off the road and away from neighbors to be private and quiet, but with easy access to many local activities and shops. There is a small river running through the back which babbles and gives you excellent views from the hot tub. We observed rabbits, deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of birds in the snow covered yard.
There are LOTS of interesting books, and fairly extensive and eclectic video (DVD & VHS) and music (CD & vinyl) collections, with a good stereo to play them through. WiFi is DSL and worked fine with our laptop.
We are definitely coming back to this cabin!
We absolutely loved this place. I went up with a few other friends for a ski weekend at Stratton (not a bad drive, only ~45 minutes) and it was perfect for a VT getaway. The cabin is in impeccable condition, very spacious and cozy with a woodburning stove.
We enjoyed the hot tub after a long day on the slopes and definitely plan to make another trip back again soon.
The owner, Dayna, was very helpful as we were planning the trip and made sure everything was good to go for our late arrival on Friday evening.
