Overview

About the property

Please Read The Entire Description:

This is a cute 1 bedroom cottage that is walking distance the national forest. There are several trails and rivers within walking distance of the cottage as well. We bought it in 2012 and lived in it for a couple of years and now with the arrival of our third daughter we needed a bigger house so we had move on to a larger house.

The living room has a real stone (hand picked) fireplace with a 150+ year old hand-hewn barn beam mantle. There is a wood stove in the fireplace (firewood provided for a fee). The one bedroom has a queen size bed with Western Red Cedar walls. There is a small 19' TV in the bedroom with a DVD player.

The cottage sleeps two in (in the queen size bed). The maximum occupancy is listed as 5, but at least one of those would need to be a child.

The bathroom has a full size shower/tub, toilet and sink.

The cottage has free wifi. There is a 39' flat screen TV in the living room with cable. The cabin also has a land line phone with free local and long distance (US only). There is also a sectional couch in the living room for extra sleeping.

There is a floor unit ac in the dinning area. The dining table seats 3. The kitchen has a cute little gas stove/oven. There is an over the range full size microwave and a full size fridge too. There is also a toaster and a coffee maker. Sheets, toilet paper and towels are provided. Paper towels are not.

There is a fire pit outside where you can have a small fire if you'd like as well (firewood must be purchased on site). Pets are always welcome but do require a pet fee(s).

We do allow for one night stays, but there is two night minimum for weekend stays (either Friday and Saturday night or Saturday & Sunday nights). Pets are welcome but we do require a Pet Fee The Cottage is a great place to see the stars. On clear nights, you can see thousands of stars overhead. It is a beautiful sight. Also during the spring and summer months, you can see humming birds everywhere. We place feeders off the front porch of the house and have personally seen upwards of 20 birds feeding on them at one time.

Check in time is 4:00 pm until 10 pm and checkout is 11 am. Early checkins, before 4, or Late checkins, after 10 pm, and late checkouts, after 11 am, require a $20 per hour fee. Please ask in advance about late checkins.

No smoking in the cabin. No beer pong or Hookahs. Noise must kept to a minimum and quiet hours are 9 pm to 9 am.

Guests are required to sign a rental agreement upon arrival and a photo ID. For this reason, the person who makes the reservation has to be the there at the time of check-in, unless the contract is signed and arrangements are made for someone else to check-in in advance.

We came to Virginia from Texas so I (Steven) could finish my college degree, but got into the vacation rental business by accident. :) We have four daughters under the age of 6. We have 6 rescue dogs, 5 rescue cats, 3 ponies, 14 goats & about 10 chickens.

We believe service is what sets us apart in the vacation rental industry. Katie & I personally own every cabin that we manage. We check-in all of our guests personally (sometimes even as late as 2 or 3 in the morning with prior approval and a fee). When you arrive, the lights will be on and you will be welcomed and shown around the cabin, unlike most other rentals where you access a lock box and walk into a dark cold house. We are always available. We really mean it when we say that we are always available. If you need us at 4 am or have a problem, please do not ever hesitate to let us know. This is all we do 24/7 and we want all of our guests to have an amazing stay. If something is wrong, we really want to know. We would be honored if you would allow us the opportunity to serve you.

Pets are welcome at all of our properties. If you or someone in your group is allergic to pets or anything else (detergent, air fresheners, etc), please let us know in advance so we can discuss this prior to your booking and then also prior to your arrival. Because this is a real cottage, there are things you should expect to find in an older real cottage such as spider webs (we clean them for every guest but they do reappear quickly), ladybugs, insects, tiny critters & stink bug(s) during certain times of the year.

All pet fee(s), early/late check-in or late check-out, firewood or extra person fees are not refundable once paid.

Failure to show up/check in or contact owner before midnight of day of arrival will result in cancellation. Host reserves the right to rebook property if guest does NOT contact owner.

Illegal drugs will not permitted on our properties under any circumstances. Smoking is not permitted inside any house or cabin or on any screen porch. There will be a $750 charge for any smoking in either of these areas. Illegal drugs being used anywhere on the property will result in a $750 charge. Kegs and hookahs are not permitted anywhere on property under any circumstances. There will be a $500 charge should either of these items (kegs or hookahs) be found on the property (this includes outside areas too). If smoking (inside or on screen porches), illegal drugs (meaning what is illegal in Virginia), keg(s), hookah(s) or fireworks (there is a $500 fine for having fireworks or for shooting firearms at a property) are found on the property the guest will be asked to leave and there will be no refund whatsoever for any portion of the stay (including any future days/nights). Guests failing to check-out by 11 am agree to pay $50 an hour for a late check-out beginning at 11:01 am. If the guest is still there at 12:00 noon then then the charge is another $50 and so on with each additional hour the guest overstays their reservation. Late check-outs require prior written permission and applicable late check-out fees to be paid.

Great cottage and great nearby hiking trails

  • 5 of 5

Staying at this cottage is just like stepping back in time to when things were simpler. Our favorite parts were the stone fireplace and the little kitchen. Real older hardwood floors and rustic touches throughout made this feel like the perfect little getaway. We were amazed by the number of stars in the sky here as we sat by the firepit in the evening. We hiked the high knob fire tower trail and the views were perfect in every direction. Wish I had brought my fishing gear because the river was just down the road. This simple, cozy and clean cottage is just what we were looking for. Can't wait to come back.

Sweet little place. I'd love to own a place just like this someday.

  • 5 of 5

Hiking trails. Scenic rivers. Peace and quiet. Comfortable and clean little place. Had a great time here. Nice place to spend some down time coupled with some great local hikes. The wood stove made the experience. Thank you for opening up your cottage to us. Let us know if you ever want to sell it.

Warm inviting cottage. Cozy woodstove.

  • 5 of 5

I needed an after Christmas pick-me-up and I wanted to get away to a cottage in the woods. Someplace to read and relax by a warm fire. This was the place was just that. Comfy queen size bed. Clean and simple interior and a wonderful stone hearth with a wood burning stove. Cute little kitchen and a decent size bathroom made this home for a few days just what I needed and wanted. Spent lots of time taking in the local scenery and sights and sounds of the river on afternoon walks around the area and then loved coming back to a warm fire. Wonderful stay.

Sufficient

  • 3 of 5

Overall I'd say that if you're looking to get away and spend most of your time outside, then this cabin is perfect. It's located close to an abundance of trails and areas to explore. The reason for the 3/5 star review is mainly due to customer service. Based on the provided descriptions of this property and the other properties they own, it seemed that they really focused on providing excellent customer service. I did read several reviews complaining about their customer service, but I tried to look past those reviews and give them the benefit-of-the-doubt. In the description of the cabin they included that they like to personally greet all customers upon arrival so I made it a priority to keep them updated as we traveled 3 hours to the cabin to ensure we both arrived around the same time. Upon arrival we got lost because google maps doesn't associate the provided address with their cabin. After about 30min of trying to find their house in the dark, I decided to give them a call but it rang twice and went to voicemail. After a few minutes I decided to give them one last call, which was immediately ignored and followed up with a text saying she (Katie) was busy in a meeting. Trying to be respectful of her meeting I explained that we were lost and could use some guidance. I follow up that text with a screen shot of our location in google maps so she could see exactly where we were. I was then given the most obscure directions so I took matters into my own hand and decided to try other roads until I found a house that resembled the white cabin in the picture. Upon arrival, Katie was no where to be found (even those they pride themselves on greeting you in person), instead we met with this young man who unlocked the house, read over the contract with us, and sold us firewood. The man apologized for having us wait 15min outside of the house when we arrived and said that it's an extremely busy time. I wanted to sympathize with him, but if they had a lock-box, he wouldn't have to drive from cabin to cabin all night. Overall, the cabin served its purpose but their customer service was lacking. If you get lost, follow my instructions: When you arrive at the row of mailboxes (see water well in front on left) turn right/continue on the paved road that brought you to the mailboxes, and make your first left onto a gravel road, which leads directly to the white cabin. At the mailboxes, google maps told us to go left and up the mountain road...do not do this.

Not what we expected

  • 2 of 5

It was not all bad but not what we had expected. First, there was considerable back and forth on the contract. The manager did not provide clear direction on what I needed to correct on the contract. So that was my first red flag. On our arrival day (Friday) our gps took us to three wrong locations. I called the cell number for Katie but got no response. We finally found the place. Yes it is old and yes it does smell old. The ceiling fan in the bedroom does not work, lights in the kitchen over the sink only had one working. Only one exterior light worked. Glass panel on porch missing (as stated in a June review). We got there around 5 and then headed back to town to get dinner and food. I got a text a little after 8pm asking when we were going to arrive and that they had been waiting for us since 4. I texted back that we had been there and called her twice but no response. The second time I left a message at 5:15pm that I was lost and could find the place. When we arrived a man came down and told me to move my car so that he would not hit it in the early morning. I had to park right up against the bushes per the owner of the other house. At 8:26 a young man came and walked us through everything. Katie texted me to say that she had no missed calls from me. I was told by the young man that I would have to pay $1 for each piece of wood. However there was a bunch of wood already there from another rental I can assume so I asked if I had to pay for it again and he said yes. At 8:59 I texted Katie again to tell her that we could not secure the front door. Katie responded that it safe area, told me about the neighbors etc. She said i did not have to pay for the wood and all the lights worked earlier that day. Basically that my opinion was wrong. Funny thing is that when the young man came back to show me how to lock the door he showed me his phone and there was a text from Katie to him right after time i called her to inform the young man that I was lost. When I asked him he said she must have just guessed. Interesting. The neighbors kept walking back and forth much of the day. It is an odd setting to say the least. Yes there is a smell coming from under the sink. Yes the AC unit has a pan that you have to keep dumping. Yes there are ants and mice (one made a little nest in the drawer). Have not heard a word out of Katie since. So be careful what you rent. Rustic is not the word I would use to describe this place.

Pet Friendly. Nice Place. Perfect Setting.

  • 5 of 5

I wanted a place to take my dog on some hikes in the national forest. The trails were great. Especially the one that goes along the river past the spot where the locals call Bathtub. The cottage was perfect for our needs. Ideal little kitchen. The custom countertops were a nice touch. In fact I liked all of the small touches. Most places have very little character, but this cottage has character and then some. Nice cools evenings by fire pit were ideal. Add a hammock somewhere and I'd be willing to move in for good. Owners were helpful and friendly.
