About Christine Coder

My husband purchased this property because he fell in love with it while he was on a walk in the neighborhood. I moved to Bellingham a year ago and we live in the main unit. I took one of the rental units ( the building was a single family home and had been converted to accommodate nuns that worked in a nearby hospital in the 1940's) and renovated it, which is what we use as our short term rental. I love meeting people from all over the United States. It is always amazing to meet people and see how similar we are, and celebrate the culture, share ideas, and be the host to others who are new in the area. I moved here from Vancouver B.C. Canada, and am anxious to meet people from around the U. S. to get to know my new country better. I have been to many cities in the world and love the Pacific Northwest.

Christine Coder purchased this apartment in 2000

Central Location & Beautiful View

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is located in the South Hill neighborhood, and it offers a sweeping view of Bellingham Bay. There's an area outside, in front of the house, where you can relax, enjoy the view, and grill up dinner if you choose. Steps run next to the house where you can walk down to a waterfront trail within 5 to 7 minutes. It's also fun to walk around the South Hill neighborhood; walk up to WWU; or walk downtown to a wonderful market (open on Saturdays).

The only possible drawbacks are the kitchen is quite small, but certainly adequate to fix a small breakfast or simple lunch. There are also a couple of stairs leading up to the bathroom that may be a problem for anyone with mobility issues.

The owners were friendly and very helpful with answering our questions. We very much enjoyed our stay.

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in the "Crows Nest." Beautiful views of Bellingham Bay. Quiet side street and spacious accommodations. I would definitely recommend this to others who need a place to stay in Bellingham.

I really loved the views of the water, and the walking trail that goes from Fairhaven to Bellingham.

Wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was perfect for the two of us. Walking distance to downtown and Fairhaven, 2 blocks from bay trail for morning runs. Very clean, bed was comfortable, and kitchen was fully functional with a gas stove, oven, microwave, and fridge. Not fancy or frilly, which we appreciated. The hosts were very nice, and the cat was great too! We plan to stay again.

The unit was great. Quite with a large yard and awesome view, and centrally located close to downtown Bellingham. The owner was communicative and easy to work with. Would stay again!

Bay-Watching

  • 5 of 5

This is a clean, cozy, nicely decorated apartment with a fantastic view of Bellingham Bay. We sat at the dining room table for hours and gazed out at miles and miles of birds and boats. Bring your binoculars. It's part of a large 1908 vintage house perched between Western Washington University and the bay shoreline. The owner lives in part of it. Several other tenants live in other parts of it. The walls are pretty thin, but noise was usually not a problem (the one time it was, the owners promptly took care of it). It's a great location, halfway between Fairhaven and downtown Bellingham, and there are stairs that can get you down to the walking trail that will take you either direction. There's good wifi, and cable TV. The kitchen is small but adequate for most purposes. A couple of things to note: The streets here are very narrow and steep. We were there during a snowstorm and were glad we had an all-wheel drive vehicle, although this won't be an issue very often in Bellingham. Parking is at a premium, but you get your own designated spot. There are a few outside stairs to negotiate, although even with a bad knee I had no problems. The place is small, but about right for a couple. The owner did a good job of making us feel welcome; she brought us some Christmas Welsh cakes, decorated with real holly sprigs. The yard has plenty of holly trees, and when decorated with a little snow, it was Christmas-card pretty.

Fairhaven Village has many excellent restaurants, our favorite is an Italian restaurant called Mambo Italiano, where we order local muscles with wine sauce, and martinis on Friday nights. Other local restaurants include Dirty Dan Harris for steaks, Jalapenos for Mexican food and great Margaritas!

Amazing local book store with a unique selection of books for everyone. ( another restaurant attached to this with wonderful lunches including gluten free options, the peanut butter cookies are amazing, and they can make a sandwich 'sans gluten' if you have not had one of those for ever). The bookstore has an outdoor courtyard where on Saturday evenings you can take a blanket, some take out food and watch a classic movie under the stars. They have a local farmers market that sets up on certain days and our very good friend and amazing artist Mary Gregg Byrne has a booth there, if you like what she has there and would love something specific you could have your favorite view of Bellingham Bay commissioned by her!

Antique shops with wonderful collectibles and vintage linen, lamps, and jewelry. On the way home from Fairhaven Village you can stop at the Chrysalis Spa and have a luxury experience, with massage, nails, facials and finish off with dinner at their waterfront restaurant.

( I had a gift certificate for this spa and went for a facial, and a manicure before Christmas one year, and I could not believe what a difference it made for my skin, I also purchased a terry/microfiber robe from them and I highly recommend it!)

The University is only a few blocks away, and is part of the Washington State University system. Western Washington is very proud of The Vikings men's basketball team. The home games a just a few minutes away. For parents visiting students at the university our apartment is a perfect place to stay. Here you will have a clean beautiful quiet place to come home to instead of sharing a room, worse yet a house with your university student and ' roommates'.

Downtown is a quiet but interesting place to wander, with museums, libraries and shops galore. For the shoppers, there are outlet malls 25 minutes down I-5 in Burlington, and north towards Canada. Vancouver is only 1 hour and 15 minutes for a day, and I used to live there so I am the best guide to what you are interested in to make the day tailored to you.

Mount Baker is also close by for those of you who like to hike and ski depending on the time of year.

I could go on and on about Bellingham, it is rated one of the top places to visit and live in the United States. Come and see why!
