About the property

Idealic, Secluded, Executive Retreat For 20+ People

100-acre property, including multiple homes and cabins, a small, fish filled lake, river frontage and five miles of trails that cut through the woods. No neighbors, no noise, with lots and lots of wildlife. Property so unique and beautiful, it was written up in the NYTimes:

The structures at Duffy Trails include the original main cabin, a hand-hewn log structure; a guesthouse; a lakeside gazebo; a stone garage with an upstairs apartment; an artist’s studio with a loft-style residential area, and a “kids’ cabin” – a 2,500 square foot building mixing reclaimed timber and mismatched log siding with walls of glass, rusted steel exterior panels, and an earth roof of succulent plants and moss.

The retreat can comfortably accommodate more than 20 people for a weekend in the woods. There’s a sauna, a hot tub, a fishing dock, a tennis court, a basketball court and a horseshoe pit. A lakeside gazebo, screened all around, is a favorite sleeping spot on hot summer nights.

The five miles of 10-foot wide private trails are groomed for x-country skiing and snow shoeing from November until March. Then, after the snow melts, for hiking and biking. The trails climb and swoop under white pines and along the Totagatic River, its brown waters twisting out of sight.

The main, log cabin, the property’s original building, sits above the beach. Inside, under the cedar-shake covered A-frame roof, stained-glass windows refract sunshine into beams, with red and yellow streaking the log walls. Details include built-in shelving, a log staircase leading to a bedroom loft and a stone fireplace with rocks collected by the original owner — a composer — on trips abroad. The downstairs walk-out has a sauna, and a master bath including an extra large whirlpool tub.

The 2,600-square-foot-high art studio cabin has light streaming in from skylights in the 20-foot-high vaulted ceiling.

Walk outside and downhill 200 feet to the kids’ cabin, and the kids in your group can watch cartoons on a plasma TV. Modern touches blend into the cabin’s hybrid North Woods aesthetic, including ceiling-mounted speakers, stainless-steel appliances and a varnished wooden dining table. A stone fireplace hides a staircase heading down to a playroom and bunk beds.

Then there’s the little log cabin – a darling, simple, sleeping quarters for four, including two beds and a log stove – that’s it. No running water.

A quirky perk on this estate is the outhouse – converted from a playhouse. Now it has running water, and a flushing toilet!

The lake is well used, for swimming and fishing (trophy Bass are caught for catch and release, and plenty of pan fish for fish fries,) and if you walk around the lake, where a ski trail loops back, you’ll see the roof lines of the cabins peeking through the trees. Stairs and walkways cut across a hill, connecting cabins.

The lake itself is approximately 15 acres, with a 15' maximum depth. It has a beautiful, sandy swimming beach, and the rest of the lake is terrific for fishing with typical fishing habitat. This is the perfect lake for canoes, kayaks, and an electric pontoon (provided,) but not a lake for motor boats or jet skis.

Fantastic place for family reunion!

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing place to gather 21 people (aged 5-75) for a memorable family reunion! There was plenty of great indoor spaces for us all to gather (loved the artists studio for our dinners) as a large group or in smaller groups - as well as places to relax for down time. Lots of really neat design features and artistic details throughout. We practically lived at the lake during day-time hours - the kids and adults had endless fun with the different water toys. The Maui mat was a HUGE hit! Lots of fishing, paddle-boarding, swimming and lounging. We had researched excursions in the area prior to our visit but ended up skipping out on most of them since we were having such a great time at the property. The only down-side was the plethora of mosquitoes (worst we have ever experienced in this neck of the woods), probably due to the excess amount of rain the area has received this summer. It was impossible to walk on the trails (even with a healthy dose of spray, the bugs were relentless) which was unfortunate since we had plenty of hikers/birders in our group. Fortunately, the lake itself was close to bug-free. Basketball and tennis courts were also put to good use in spite of the mosquitoes. We would highly recommend this property and hope to come back some day! Memories of a life time made!

Fantastic Family Fun

  • 5 of 5

We had 20+ people staying at Duffy Trail's ranging from 10 months to 63 years of age. This place was great and more than exceeded my expectations! All of the water toys you could possibly need, to play on the lake, are provided. A perfect setting for families to fish, sit around a campfire and take morning walks on the trail or just relax. All of the cabins are beautiful and well equipped. I can't say enough about how wonderful this place is. Jeff & Susan were so easy to work with and promptly answered any and all questions. My family has mentioned going back someday!

Peaceful and Fun Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Words can not describe how amazing this 100 acre property is; it has everything you need to have a great time! We had a group ranging from young children to 60+ age adults and everyone found activities to keep us busy for days. We enjoyed playing tennis and basketball as well as trying out the various water equipment (canoes, kayaks, paddle boat, paddle boards and pontoon). The fishing was unbelievable and we enjoyed many nights in the hot tub and around the campfire. Cabins were stunning and each one was unique with a different theme. Jeff and Susan made us feel very welcome from the beginning and we received a tour so we felt comfortable with the property. We would certainly go again in the future and would recommend to anyone!

A look Back

  • 5 of 5

Our family fo 17 enjoyed our stay at Duffy's Trails. Access to all of the cabins, etc, allowed us to be togehter, yet have space. We took advantage of all the amenities. We fisehed, swam, played horse shoes and walked the trails. The girlls were great. We even had a fish fry, using the outside grill areas.

The propery was very clean, and very well maintained. There are quite a few steps, but very doable.

It would be a great place for a quilt retreat.
