Villa Oasis is one of the most luxurious vacation rentals in the heart of Guanajuato. It can be a retreat for artists, writers, amateur chefs, and anyone who wants to be close to the cultural amenities of Guanajuato centro without the hassle of walking long distances or taking a taxi. Situated a block from Callejon del Beso and within 5 minutes walking distance to Teatro Juarez, one can be at home to rest and relax between activities in very little time. The retreat is a three-story townhouse, with a rooftop garden on the third floor, the master bedroom on the second, with its own garden patio, the kitchen on the first, a recessed living room and a daylight basement where the second bedroom is. The house is full of light with high ceilings, large windows and a skylight on the top floor.

Villa Oasis has a system of purified water and a reverse osmosis water filter for drinking water. The water pressure is consistent and strong from every faucet and shower on every floor. In the kitchen is a tap for the reverse osmosis drinking water. The house has a 96 sq ft rooftop patio. In the center third of the patio is a tempered glass cover with 70% UV protection. There are outdoor cafe tables and cushioned seats, where you can enjoy an expansive view of the uniquely colorful city, including the surrounding hills, the Alhondiga, Mercado Hildago, the church of San Roque, and El Pipila and the University.

The master bedroom on the second floor has maple flooring, a king size bed, a full-length mirror, and it's own living room for two, separated by a retractable curtain. Pella windows, installed throughout the house, are double glazed with interior shades to keep out noise and night light from the busy centro streets. Black out shades can cover the floor length windows for additional sleep quality. The bedroom has a small balcony that looks out onto Callejon San Cristobal. It has it's own bathroom with marble floors, a shower, a double sink made of granite, and a bidet. The oasis theme continues with sliding doors that open on to a covered patio with an outdoor table and chairs and the same gorgeous view as the rooftop deck .

One floor down, the contemporary kitchen has the great view of the city again, through panoramic Pella windows. It is fully equipped for baking and cooking, and with the market near by one has access to all the diverse and seasonal fruits and vegetables that Mexico has to offer. There is a full refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, and a gas oven and stovetop with a warming oven for plates and/or food. We've roasted turkey, and made pizza, panettone, and French bread in the oven. In front of the windows there is a large mesquite table that seats 8 comfortably.

As one enters the slate covered hallway of the house on a hot sunny day directly from the busy street of Callejon San Cristobal, one is met with a refreshing coolness that feels like air conditioning. The house is insulated quite well and in the summer it can be at least 10 degrees cooler than the street. We also provide a fan and there is an air-conditioning unit that can be used on very hot days. In the winter we provide space heaters. From the entry way one can walk directly into the kitchen or walk five steps down into the recessed living room with maple flooring, on street level. The living room is a comfortable place for playing board games, socializing or reading.

From the living room going down to the daylight basement there is a wide marble staircase covered with a custom designed hand woven wool Oaxacan rug, and flanked by a built in bookcase, with many books on the history and archeology of Mexico, among other subjects.

At the bottom of the staircase is the daylight basement with an entertainment area with a TV, DVD player. Opposite the TV area is a cozy sitting area with an electric fireplace, a queen pullout sofa bed. Another amenity in the basement hallway is an exercise bike, 2 sets of weights, 3 & 5 lbs, and an exercise mat. Below the library is a writer's desk and chair with a desk light. Opposite is the guest bathroom with a large oval mirror and granite counter top.

The very end of the hallway below the library leads to a recessed second bedroom. It has a queen size bed, a closet, and a full-length mirror and dresser. The bedroom and adjoining bathroom and shower floors are made of light marble with the bathroom counter top made of granite.

The washer and dryer are located in the half bath on the rooftop. Other amenities include a wireless printer.

I have a few suggestions regarding the seasons and also the neighborhood fiesta on our street.

First of all the rainy season begins in July and goes into September. A sudden unexpected downpour can hit one during this season. It's exciting and dramatic, but you need to be prepared. It's a good idea to bring an umbrella, a raincoat and waterproof boots or shoes. Moreover, the paving stones in centro can be quite slippery when wet. If you have shoes that are non-slip or have a good tread you might want to bring them.

During the winter season from December into March there are nights where occasionally the temperatures can drop into the 30's. Most houses in Mexico do not have built in heating. We provide a space heater for each bedroom and two blankets for each bed.

Finally, each neighborhood in Mexico has it's own patron saint and his/her special feast day. St Anthony of Padua is Callejon San Cristobal's patron and around June 13th the neighborhood celebrates for two or three days! The street is completely closed to traffic during the fiesta.

If you decide to stay at Villa Oasis you can be assured of a relaxing vacation in the heart of Guanajuato city.

About Antoinette Ferrari

I've lived here almost three years, and have enjoyed all the cultural activities and the good food that the town has to offer. My husband, Julio, and I have spent much of the time completing the remodel of Villa Oasis. It's time now to share this beautiful home with vacationers. I'm looking forward to going home to Seattle so that I can be closer to my daughters and relatives.

Antoinette Ferrari purchased this townhome in 2011

Why Antoinette Ferrari chose Zona Centro

The property at Callejon San Cristobal was handed down to me as a remodel. I was happy to take on the challenge with Julio, who is an amazing contractor and skilled carpenter, and together we have enjoyed turning it into a comfortable vacation home.

What makes this townhome unique

We have installed a reverse osmosis purified water system, so that when first time travelers to Mexico arrive it makes for an easier transition. There is a north facing view of the town with all it's colorful houses and churches, a nice view of the Alhondiga, and the market and the University of Gto from the kitchen and patio. Not to mention that it is in the center of town, one block from Callejon del Beso, and five minutes from the Jardin and Teatro Juarez. There is good accessibility to a fruit and vegetable store on the corner, a laundromat, an OXXO, and a farmacia all one block away, and the hospital is less than four blocks away. Monuments are no more than 5-10 minutes walking distance. Taxis go past our front door often. You can take a taxi to the bus station in town and take a bus to any city or town in Mexico. The closest towns to visit are San Miguel de Allende, and Dolores Hidalgo. The house is very well suited for two couples.

Stunning house, great location

  • 5 of 5

Guanajuato is a magical place, and this elegant, stylishly renovated townhouse is a delightful find. If you're the kind of person who likes to fantasize that you've landed in the pages of one of the shelter magazines for your vacation, you'll love this. The master bedroom is spacious, with a beautiful view of the city, a sitting room and a lovely patio (with a hummingbird feeder as the cherry on the sundae). The second bedroom is in the basement and has no windows, so it's perfect for people who like a dark and quiet place to sleep. Beds are comfy, linens nice, kitchen well equipped. You have probably noticed that every comment about central Guanajuato mentions street noise at night. We were here in January when it is chilly at night so the windows were closed. The owners invested in double-pane Pella windows. I am a light sleeper and I can tell you that we were never disturbed by the barking roof dogs and other night noises. (If you're there at a time of year when you want the windows open at night, you'll have to expect noise in any dwelling in the Centro.) The rooftop patio is an absolute gem overlooking all the iconic GTO landmarks including the university, Alhondiga and uncountable churches. It could only be improved by adding some cushions for the metal chairs and the lounges. This is very central but a 10-minute walk from the Jardin/Teatro Juarez tourist craziness, and closer to the market hall and various areas where the locals actually shop. On our last day, we took the funicular up to El Pipila and walked down the hill to "our" house, right through the Callejon del Beso.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your great review! I am sorry that the cushions were not made available to you. We do have them and I will make sure that guests are made aware of them in the future.

Spectacular Stay - Beautiful Home, Perfect Location!

  • 5 of 5

Everything about our stay exceeded expectations. The roomy, modern, well furnished home has beautiful expansive views of the city. Perfect location steps away from the heart of the city and it's attractions. Nina (owner) and Greg (manager) were perfectly communicative, responsive, and welcoming. Greg helped coordinate transportation from the airport, which I recommend. We were also able to coordinate a fabulous day trip with Israel (highly recommended!) to Santa Rosa, Dolores Hidalgo, and San Miguel de Allende. Our entire family greatly enjoyed our stay at Villa Oasis and we look forward to returning soon.

Great house overall!! Minor issues..

  • 4 of 5

The overall experience was great! We were 2 couples and had a great time in Guanajuato. The house is great and really neat, awsome kitchen, big dining room, great balconies and great views.. The only issues: (1) Eventhough the location is great - only 3 min walk to the heart of Guanajuato - the neighborhood is somehow ugly... (2) if you are arriving in a car, make sure it is a really small car! The access is very complicated.. (3) the bed in the master bedroom is extreeeemely soft, very uncomfortable... (4) the TV is amlost the same size as my laptop monitor. Aside from those 4 issues, I would recommend anyone to stay at this property!!

A really beautiful home with amazing views !

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful, spacious home furnished with high quality furniture and decor. It is plenty large enough for 4 people with many places to convene and also spaces to go off alone. The views from the 2 patios and kitchen are amazing! It is just a few minutes walk to everything g in Zono Centre, however if you are elderly or have knee problems, be aware that you will need to walk up and down hilly streets to get places. This is a lively town with church bells ringing frequently, dogs barking and people socializing, which we loved. The home has Pella windows which when closed, can greatly reduce the noise. The town does quiet down at night except for the occasional dog barking. There is a little corner grocery a few steps away so we made several meals in the well stocked kitchen. Greg and Nina were very responsive to our needs. We all would like to return to Villa Oasis!

Location, location, location!

Absolutely lovely home with some of the best views in Guanajuato from the master bedroom patio, from the upper roof top patio, or from the kitchen dining area. Literally steps from everything, easy walk to the main jardin, Mercado, Theatro Juarez and the funicular. Both the owner and manager were delightful to work with, even securing a driver to provide transportation an hour a way from San Miguel de Allende as well as return to the airport in a León. The house is very nicely done and the master bedroom suite is heavenly, including a super comfortable king size bed. The neighborhood is quiet and certainly felt safe. Whole house purified water AND a reverse osmosis tap in the kitchen are a definite plus. It was a most enjoyable week at Casa Oadis!
