Fair Winds is a charming beach house completed in the spring of 2012 and located in the Piney Island section of the old fishing town of Chincoteague Island, Virginia. It is a quick bike ride to the bridge to Assateague with boat ramp water access just down the street. Assateague Island is a national wildlife refuge run by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The pristine beach (4.0 miles from the house) is managed by the US Park Service. Fair Winds has three bedrooms plus a den (the "loft room") and two full baths. The upstairs master has a king-sized bed; a queen is in the front bedroom downstairs, twins are in the downstairs “turtle room” and the upstairs loft room. The loft room is ok for a couple of kids. It is open to the great room below, but there are doors that can close it off for sleeping. The heart of Fair Winds is the sunny great room with wood-burning fireplace. It includes living and dining areas as well as the kitchen with island and barstools. Kitchen amenities include electric range with glass cooktop, dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, and an excellent supply of cookware and utensils. On the street side is a partially covered deck, and in the back, a screened porch overlooks the woods. In the hall of the main floor, there is a laundry closet with full sized washer and dryer. There is a TV with satellite service and a DVD player in the loft room. In the great room is a simple but impressive radio/CD/iPod player. The house has a land line for local calls as well as wireless internet access. Below the house is the carport, shed, an outdoor shower for removing the worst of the sand from the beach, and a clothes line. You will also find a small Weber grill. Please bring sheets and towels (don't forget beach towels!), because I do not provide linen service. Please, no smoking and no pets. Fair Winds will be cleaned and ready for your stay. Enjoy the quintessential family vacation, and I wish you 'Fair winds and a following sea.'

About Barbara Early
I built this house across the street from my own vacation home mainly for family and friends. My family has been coming to Chincoteague for many years and I am spending more and more time here in this beautiful place.
Barbara Early purchased this House in 2012
Why Barbara Early chose Piney Island
Chincoteague Island is unique among beach spots. It is not for the wild minded, but for families, it is perfect. The Piney Island neighborhood is the closest to the bridge to Assateague, easy biking distance at 4.0 miles. The gravel road keeps the cars slow and enables the kids to ride their bikes with abandon.
What makes this House unique
I built this house myself and tried to have it be both child friendly (assuming a bit of sand!) and comfortable for quiet evenings for adults.

Lovely, imimaculate beach house
Very well equipped with everything you need. Comfortable and close to Aasateague. Great value for the money. I would not hesitete to rent again.
Thanks, Kim for your thoughts about my house! I'm so glad you found it comfortable and convenient and that it contributed positively to your Chincoteague vacation. And do come back!
Wonderful house and a great location.
Kitchen was wonderfully equipped and the house was lovely. We really enjoyed the water put in just down the road which was wonderfully convenient. The house was close to the park and accessible to everywhere else. We loved it!
Thanks, John, for this review. I'm glad you took advantage of the boat put in that is so close by, and that you appreciated the kitchen. I work to keep it well supplied. Glad you noticed!
Beautiful home away from home.
Two adults & two twelve year old girls stayed in this beautiful home from June 25- July 2. The kitchen has everything you need. It was nice to sit on the screened back porch in the evenings. We even saw a deer in the back yard. Close to everything. Definitely our top pick the next time we visit.
Thanks, Paula, for this kind review. That screened porch is a wonderful, quiet spot to unwind after a day at the beach. I'm so glad my home contributed to a great vacation on our magical island, and I'm pleased that you want to return!
An outstanding home; a great experience
We selected Fair Winds for our annual get together with the kids because it looked great on the web site and the location seemed ideal (we stayed for a week, May 21 to 28). From the moment we arrived to the property we knew our initial impression on its location had been right on target. The home is on a quiet, very well kept street with very nice homes in the surroundings, yet, the homes are also secluded and private. Lots of trees, birds chirping, lovely nature all around. Then, from the moment we opened the front door, we loved everything we saw. The great room is spacious, airy, very tastefully decorated and inviting. Fresh flowers and a handwritten note from the owner reinforced the sense we were in good hands. As we looked around the kitchen, the bedrooms, bathrooms, etc., all were so well cared for, neat and tasteful. The kitchen, a very important aspect for me, was very well equipped, with good quality implements, flatware, silverware, etc. Net, we loved Fair Winds and would have no hesitation whatsoever to go back (if return to Chincoteague, we will definitely stay there) and to recommend the home to friends and family. The owner, Barbara, was immediately responsive to the couple of questions we had; truly, we did not have to bother her because there was nothing amiss. I'm sure, though, had I had the chance to meet her, she would have been as charming in person as she appeared to be over email and text. Just to say it again, Fair Winds was perfect for us and we enjoyed Chincoteague very much! Highly recommend the home and the island.!!
Thanks, Mauricio, for this detailed and thoughtful review. I am so pleased that your family found the home to meet your needs and that the special little additions that I include were appreciated. As I've said before, this is where my family and friends stay, and I try to make all my guests comfortable. Hope to have you back again!
We arrived to an immaculate home, fresh flowers and a lovely note from the owner welcoming us. The home is beautifully appointed with a fabulously equipped kitchen. The back porch affords stunning views of wildlife & sunsets, while the front is an inviting place to read a book or enjoy morning coffee. Bonus - the nigjts are still and noiseless and the sky is absolute starry dome. Also, the house is very near the bridge to Assateague - a glorious bike ride to the beach, there. I'd recommend this place to anyone who's looking for a bonafide getaway!
Thank you, Amy, for the kind words. I am always pleased when my cozy home can be the getaway my guests were looking for. You have captured the charm the house and neighborhood provide, and I hope your family returns to my Fair Winds one day!
Perfect Chincoteague getaway
My mom and 2 sisters and I stayed here for 4 nights this September to celebrate my Mom's 80th. The house is gorgeous, very well equipped, and convenient to everything. We each had our own rooms, plenty of privacy, and we enjoyed sitting outside in the screened in porch in the back, and on the big deck in front. There's no TV on the first floor, so we played games and read books, which was a nice change.
We spent a day on the beach, took a day trip to Tangier Island (from Ocrakoke, a 50 minute drive), and had a great 2-hour pontoon boat ride with Captain Gene from Daisy's Cruises. We made an awesome seafood dinner one night from Gary Howard's market, and loved AJ's restaurant right around the corner. Island Creamery is also a must-do. Lots of places to explore, and this is a great home base to do it from. Highly recommended!
I'm so glad that your Mom's birthday weekend was a success and that my house contributed to the pleasure. It pleases me to know that I can contribute to happy family events. It sounds like you tried out lots of wonderful island activities and came back to a comfortable home away from home. And Happy 80th Birthday, Mom!
