Immaculate new home, close to the bridge to Assateague, bike to the beach!

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

3 bedroom, Den, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6

Fair Winds is a charming beach house completed in the spring of 2012 and located in the Piney Island section of the old fishing town of Chincoteague Island, Virginia. It is a quick bike ride to the bridge to Assateague with boat ramp water access just down the street. Assateague Island is a national wildlife refuge run by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The pristine beach is managed by the US Park Service. Fair Winds has three bedrooms plus a den (the "loft room") and two full baths. The upstairs master has a king-sized bed; a queen is in the front bedroom downstairs, twins are in the downstairs “turtle room” and the upstairs loft room. The loft room is ok for a couple kids. It is open to the great room below, but there are doors that can close it off for sleeping. The heart of Fair Winds is the sunny great room with wood-burning fireplace. It includes living and dining areas as well as the kitchen with island and barstools. Kitchen amenities include electric range with glass cooktop, dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, and an excellent supply of cookware and utensils. On the street side is a partially covered deck, and in the back, a screened porch overlooks the woods. In the hall of the main floor, there is a laundry closet with full sized washer and dryer. There is a TV with satellite service and a DVD player in the loft room. In the great room is a simple but impressive radio/CD/iPod player. The house has a land line for local calls as well as wireless internet access. Below the house is the carport, shed, an outdoor shower for removing the worst of the sand from the beach, and a clothes line. You will also find a small Weber grill. Please, no smoking and no pets. Fair Winds will be cleaned and ready for your stay. Please bring sheets and towels (don't forget beach towels!), because I do not provide linen service. Experience the quintessential family vacation. I wish you 'Fair winds and a following sea.'

About Barbara Early

I built this house across the street from my own vacation home mainly for family and friends. My family has been coming to Chincoteague for many years and I am spending more and more time here in this beautiful place.

Barbara Early purchased this house in 2012

Why Barbara Early chose Chincoteague Island

Chincoteague is unique among beach spots. It is not for the wild minded, but for families, it is perfect. The Piney Island neighborhood is the closest to the bridge to Assateague, easy biking distance. The dirt road keeps the cars slow and enables the kids to ride their bikes with abandon.

What makes this house unique

I built this house myself and tried to have it be both child friendly (assuming a bit of sand!) and comfortable for quiet evenings for adults.

Sparkling sanctuary!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived to an immaculate home, fresh flowers and a lovely note from the owner welcoming us. The home is beautifully appointed with a fabulously equipped kitchen. The back porch affords stunning views of wildlife & sunsets, while the front is an inviting place to read a book or enjoy morning coffee. Bonus - the nigjts are still and noiseless and the sky is absolute starry dome. Also, the house is very near the bridge to Assateague - a glorious bike ride to the beach, there. I'd recommend this place to anyone who's looking for a bonafide getaway!

Perfect Chincoteague getaway

  • 5 of 5

My mom and 2 sisters and I stayed here for 4 nights this September to celebrate my Mom's 80th. The house is gorgeous, very well equipped, and convenient to everything. We each had our own rooms, plenty of privacy, and we enjoyed sitting outside in the screened in porch in the back, and on the big deck in front. There's no TV on the first floor, so we played games and read books, which was a nice change.

We spent a day on the beach, took a day trip to Tangier Island (from Ocrakoke, a 50 minute drive), and had a great 2-hour pontoon boat ride with Captain Gene from Daisy's Cruises. We made an awesome seafood dinner one night from Gary Howard's market, and loved AJ's restaurant right around the corner. Island Creamery is also a must-do. Lots of places to explore, and this is a great home base to do it from. Highly recommended!

Owner's Response: I'm so glad that your Mom's birthday weekend was a success and that my house contributed to the pleasure. It pleases me to know that I can contribute to happy family events. It sounds like you tried out lots of wonderful island activities and came back to a comfortable home away from home. And Happy 80th Birthday, Mom! Barbara

A Great Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

The house is immaculate and beautifully appointed in fun beach style. This home has comfortable furnishings and a well-supplied kitchen. We slept 8, including a 3-year old and a 10-year old and it never felt crowded. We loved the back screened porch! Reliable wi-first, too. I was so impressed by the vast assortment of games, books, and activities for all ages. I highly recommend this wonderful property.

A beautiful and spacious rental. Lots of daylight. Clean and simple decor.

We went as a 3 generation 6 person family group and had a fun time. It rained most of the time but this didn't set us back as there was enough room in the house to hold us all and many places to visit when there were breaks in the weather. I'm not sure there is any walking access to the waterfront, but we didn't mind. We mostly got in the cars and spent time at the wildlife refuge, ocean side beach and eateries in town.

Owner's Response: So sorry I wasn't able to order up better weather! But thanks for the kind words about the house as sanctuary during the rains. It is a cozy place. Be sure to bring your family back for another visit and we'll hope for warm breezes and lots of sunshine.

Perfect for Girls Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

The house is immaculate, spacious, and nicely decorated, not to mention very comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked, and we pretty much camped out at the kitchen island when we weren't exploring Assateague or Chincoteague. The owner was very responsive to emails and had thoughtful items in the house, such as a map of where the house was on the island, and restaurant referrals (Captain Zack's delivers to the house!). The house was perfect for us, and very idea for families.
