Relax, Renew & Rejuvenate*Quiet Family-friendly Home*

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,753 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Sleeps 12. 3 Bedrooms. 3 Baths.

We invite you and your family to experience the sights and sounds of the Big Island in our quiet, comfortable home on 3 acres overlooking Kealakekua Bay. Our 2-bedroom, 2 bathroom main house, which sleeps 4-6, has a breathtaking view of the bay from its huge lanai and almost every room. Fully open the bank of disappearing sliding doors in the great room and louvered windows throughout the house to invite the cooling island breezes and experience Hawaii’s unique outdoor living. A cozy Ohana cottage, which sleeps 4-6 and has an additional bathroom, is just steps away from the main house and is great for older children, teens, or another family.

Our property is conveniently located near Napo’opo’o Village and Kealakeua Bay, but without the congestion and noise. You can be at the warm water’s edge in an approximately 10-minute walk down the hill or a very short car ride. Experience a family picnic and great snorkeling at Manini Beach or rent a kayak or stand-up paddle board for an adventure with the spinner dolphins to the Captain Cook monument on the bay. Just a little farther south off a bumpy dirt road, explore Ke’ei Beach with its white sand speckled with black lava fragments and tide pools—this area appeals to picnickers, fisherman, surfers, and the more adventurous snorkeler and is generally not very populated. Approximately 5 miles south of our property (~15 minute car ride), is the very popular “Two Step” snorkeling area in Honaunau Bay and adjacent to Pu’uhonuoa O Honaunau National Park (Place of Refuge). Snorkel or dive around coral covered lava fingers and deep water canyons for an entirely different underwater experience. Stop at the adjacent Place of Refuge and learn about the history and culture of Hawaii. For more adventure, experience the very remote green sand beach of South Point (~1.5 hour drive) or fascinating scenery and geology of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (~2 hour drive).

If you are looking to unwind and decompress in a rural setting away from the more touristy parts of Kailua-Kona (~20-30 minutes north), then our home and property will appeal to you. Our year-round warm dry climate and warm ocean waters are our idea of paradise. Enjoy our brilliant green “laughing” geckoes, our tropical native birds and their musical serenades, our fun “bleating” wild goat herd on the adjacent lava flow, and chasing the occasional hopping toad across our driveway. We offer a home-away-from-home for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and for those that just want to slow down.

About Mary & Bob Stechmann

It has always been our dream to live in South Kona on the Big Island, and in November 2013 our dream came true. This home will be where we live full time in our “golden years”, but for now we want to share the magic of the island with you. We ask you to treat this home as if it is your own, and to act as a steward for those that will enjoy it after you.

We are both geologists, specializing in environmental geology, and lovers of the great out-of-doors. We love animals, both domestic and wild. The warm temperatures of Kealakekua Bay and rural feel of the area held great appeal to us, plus the surf spots and snorkeling were a great draw. We plan to nurture our existing fruit trees, plant some mango trees, and add a couple of domestic goats, possibly a pig, and a flock of chickens to the property in the future.

The home was built in 1989 by a couple now in their 80s who had to move on. We have done very little to change the flavor of the home—a lot of thought, work, and love went into its construction and maintenance. The stained glass, mosaics, ceramics, and woodwork were all done by the former owners. (It was our family project to add the Yellow Tang mailbox!) We think the walls enfold wonderful memories and energy. Please take care of it all for us, while we are away…

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was fantastic. The main house is open and airy, with a great lanai opening up to views of Kealakeua Bay. The only sounds we heard were birds and frogs at night. So peaceful! The Ohana was plenty big enough for our family of 4, but it was a little stuffy, even with the ceiling fans (we took one of the fans from the main house, which helped a lot).

The location is great. It's just a 15 minute walk down to Manini Beach, which has no sand, but is very scenic and relaxing. We were out of the house by 7 am five mornings in a row to go snorkeling at Two Step (15 minute drive), which I thought had the best snorkeling anywhere on the island. Volcano National Park is 2 hrs away, and 3 hrs to Kalapana, where you can rent bikes to see the lava flow currently entering the ocean (highly recommended). Keauhou, 20 minutes north, is where you can do the night snorkel trip with the manta rays, a can't miss activity.

The house may not be for everyone. This is not a sealed air-conditioned new construction town house in a resort development. There is no air-con, and the openness of the house leads to a lot of geckos (which I rather enjoyed) and flying insects at night. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat, with a tropical feel in a residential community of Hawaii, this is the place for you.

Cool, California

I didn't want to leave!

The photos are an exact depiction of the house and property - and yet the reality is SO much better! This is a perfect house in a perfect location! We loved the Geckos - indoors and out (not so much the other critters - but, hey, it's Hawaii!) We fed the birds, watched the mongoose and heard the goats (we especially loved the baby goat). After an early morning snorkel at Two-Step, we would have breakfast and coffee on the lanai and watch the boats and kayaks over at the Captain Cook monument in the bay. The house description is clear that there is no air-conditioning. It's been our experience that most vacation rentals where we have stayed in Hawaii do not. However, Mary and Bob have provided fans for those nights when the breeze is not sufficient to cool the house. We left the windows open and woke up to the birds and ocean sounds in the morning (having turned off the fans in the night). This rental also includes everything you could ever need in the kitchen and plenty of items that are handy for snorkeling or laying on the beach. We rented snorkel gear from Snorkel Bob's, but used the water shoes and beach towels from the house. The location is rural and yet reasonably close to Kailua-Kona. We've rented a house or condo in Hawaii 6 or 7 times in the last 10 years and this has been our best VRBO experience! I highly recommend this rental!!

Beautiful home and location

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was everything we hoped it would be. Beautiful home in a somewhat secluded location. Close access to Captain Cook Monument, great snorkeling (two step and the bay by the Cook monument) and an array of other great attractions. Mary and Bob provided an informative binder in the home so we were able to navigate things on our own. The only drawback was no air conditioning, which we knew when booking. The home has lovely screen doors and screen windows throughout to allow air flow. Not being used to the heat though we melted anyway. That being said I would still choose this beautiful home over a hotel with air conditioning.

Owner's Response: It's true the island's summer heat and humidity can be tough on some non-natives, but we provide plenty of fans to help your stay be more comfortable. A frosty umbrella drink on the lanai or a day bobbing in the cool water at Manini Beach are our favorite ways to beat the heat. The water at the entry to Manini Beach is cooler than the ocean because of the mixing of fresh water from underground aquifers--it's a real treat!

Great location on the Big Island for a large group

  • 4 of 5

Nine of us stayed very comfortably in this beautiful house. Morning coffee on the lanai was a highlight, with great view of K-bay. We also loved the morning herd of goats and the birds. Upside: clean, well-kept, beautiful home on a beautiful, large lot; an away-from-the-crowd setting; great kitchen and large living room; very nice dinner at local Italian place, Mi's. Downside (though if you are visiting from Alaska in the winter, its hard to have a downside about anything in Hawaii): had to rely on a car to go most places, not much in easy walking distance; bedrooms were open at the ceiling level, so some shared noise and lack of privacy. That's it. We loved our stay here and would highly recommend this beautiful home.

Owner's Response: We love Kealakekua Bay precisely for the reason that it is so off the beaten path of the touristy towns. Adventurous spirits and those who require total relaxation will find aloha in our open-air home.
