Overview

About the property

Enjoy Our Very Private & Beautiful Surroundings.

Entering through the wrought iron gate onto a winding stone path through the gardens, one strolls onto the back deck or gazebo for an unequaled view of the river. The massive exotic wood door provides entrance to a home you’ll be telling your friends about for years. Extensively remodeled, the kitchen with the rough-hewn brick walls and floor to ceiling windows will be activity central.

Enjoy a very private time on a point of land jutting into Chase Creek off the Severn River, but just 5 minutes from downtown Annapolis. Whether you want to run, or ride a bike, explore the river, spend time reading or writing, or just relax, Briarcliff Retreat will suit your needs.

INDOORS

Every room in the home has a view of the water, often with windows on 3 sides allowing beautiful light to stream in throughout the day. The large glass windows and sliding door face south; you'll find you want to keep them open throughout the warm months as the breeze off the river often flows right through the home.

Two comfortable sofas surround the wood-burning fireplace. A large steel trough keeps wood and kindling at hand. A perfect place to read and reflect is in the window seat filled with pillows. Off the living area is a writer's dream - a cozy office surrounded by windows with hydrangeas at the sill, the gazebo just beyond and water in the distance.

OUTDOORS

The grounds abound with native foliage and luscious landscaping changing with the seasons—and illuminated at night for those evening private strolls. Take in the terraced hillside as you walk from the upper deck, to the mid-deck where a large double hammock awaits you to the lower deck and private dock.

The house sits approximately 50' above water, which provides spectacular views. By the house, there are little nooks throughout for taking time for yourself or with those closest to you; a porch swing and love-seat just outside the living room, a gazebo with a quiet bench overlooking the terraced gardens and water, a huge iron cast fire-pit surrounded by stools and log seating, two Adirondack chairs on the upper deck to lounge in while sipping your cocktail, a grilling area off the kitchen with a Weber grill, and a dining table overlooking the view where you can enjoy your wonderful meal.

And for those staying in the Master Bedroom, a private balcony and stunning sunrises await you.

In short, every guest could easily find their own secluded retreat...

For the gourmand, or not, this is a kitchen you will not want to leave and which will, no doubt, become activity central. Original 1920s rough hewn bricks cover 3 of 4 walls; when lit they become a work of art. The 11' long bar-top is a beautiful solid piece of African wood called Bubinga. The entire kitchen aside from the brick is new, including top of the line appliances. As you stand at the sink, you might turn and look out the floor to ceiling windows, feeling as if on the edge of a precipice, looking down a steep hill to Chase Creek. Just on the other side is a glassed in bay with a view of the garden. There a sliding door leads you directly from kitchen to outdoor grill.

Dine indoors at the dining table, at the stunning wood bar-top or at the outdoor table overlooking the creek and Severn River beyond surrounded by dozens of twinkling outdoor garden lights.

BEDROOMS & BATHROOMS (3 private bedrooms each with private full bath; sleeps 2 per bedroom) The 3 Bathrooms are in the 1940's style, with some updates, super clean and nice. The main floor powder room is brand new.

About Erin Betz

Welcome to the home of Julie and Glenn — a former professional ballet dancer who has closed the curtain and a Navy fighter pilot who has parked his jets. These days you’ll find us aboard the good Schooner Mistress, either in the Caribbean, the Pacific, or the Mediterranean (depending on when you’re reading this).

Perhaps we are living the life of which you’ve always dreamt—so now you don’t have to! Vicarious living is best…all the memories and none of the expense, hardship, and long cold nights on watch hundreds of miles from any land. But the more the house is rented, the longer we can stay away, and the more the house will remain available for your future excursions and vacations to Annapolis.

While you’re here at Briarcliff, please follow us on our travels over the seas - www.schoonermistress.net. Feel free to pass along a note via the site and let us know how you liked our home. You are the ones that are making this trip possible for us--our many and heartfelt thanks.

Why Erin Betz chose Central

Having bought this magical home and spending many months afterwards undergoing a major renovation before promptly setting sail, we are eager to share this special home and enjoy it as we would. The view from the master bedroom overlooking Chase Creek includes the deep water dock to which, one day, S/V Mistress will return.

Stylish Family friendly escape

On a last minute whim, my husband and I took our kids (ages 5 and 6) down to Annapolis to spend a weekend with a friend. We could not have been more delighted. This home is beautifully decorated, comfortable, user friendly and wonderfully positioned. There is a fantastic breeze that comes up the bank from the water, and gorgeous views all around. The kids joined a friend and neighbor on a boat trip, launched from the dock, and swam each day. The kitchen is a chef's dream. We had a fantastic dinner for 6 out on the porch, under the stars. Also took the kids for a walk down the road to visit the horses, and made an easy hop onto the B&A bike path. Hope to be back just as soon as we can!

Relaxation at it's best!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I work long and hard therefore vacation for us is all about relaxing, reconnecting and replenishing. Briarcliff was the perfect remedy! Lazy days on the extensive deck and/or hammock and/or fishing/crabbing on the private pier. The grounds are lush and provides just the right amount of privacy, the views from both inside the house and out are spectacular, exhilarating and refreshing. Briarcliff had me wishing I were a seaman and owned a boat then I we would have been able to take full advantage of all Briarcliff had to offer. I could go on and on and on, but I think you get the point... It's a great place and fantastic experience. Strongly recommended!!!

Exquisite, inside and out!

  • 5 of 5

Stunning house in an exquisite location! The house is bright and full of light, with beautiful furnishings and a wonderful gourmet kitchen. The view of and access to Chase Creek and the Severn River was amazing, both to enjoy from the house as well as down on the dock. The grounds were lovely, with many places to enjoy a book under the trees while enjoying the view of boats on the creek. Our family met there from 3 states, and it was a perfect gathering place.

What we loved most: the wonderful windows and beautiful, open feel of the house. The comfortable beds and bedrooms. The exquisite views and outdoor spaces. The kitchen! Being a few minutes from Annapolis, but on the water instead of in the city. Fishing and crabbing from the dock. The kayaks we rented and had delivered to the dock. Easy trip (45 minutes) from DC and BWI. And Christine, who was so helpful in answering questions and a great resource.

Ideal Easter Respite

  • 5 of 5

My family met up with another family at the Briarcliff Retreat to spend Easter weekend together. Our jaws collectively dropped as we first walked through the doors and took in all the features of this stunning home! The house is bathed in sunlight and comfortably appointed with contemporary furniture, artwork, and amenities. The kitchen is a chef's dream, with generous counter space and seating, plenty of light, and state-of-the-art appliances. The living room, bedrooms, and bathrooms all offer aesthetically perfect touches everywhere you look. The views from every room are spectacular. The deck is perfectly placed to enjoy happy hour among the trees and water. The dock would be ideal for sailors! I watched the moon rise through the trees and glitter the water from the master bedroom - such a luxury. We are already planning our next escape to the Briarcliff Retreat.
