About the property

Pua Lani House

Pua Lani House is an off-the-grid, solar-powered home situated on the beautiful Puna Coast of the Big Island, approximately 30 miles southeast of Hilo. Just a 4 minute stroll from ocean tide pools, start each morning taking in the spectacular Hawaiian sunrise. The house is located in an intimate jungle neighborhood on a safe, yet slightly bumpy, dead-end dirt road.

The property has a large grass lawn with many fruiting trees including banana, mango, papaya, coconut, lime, orange, fig, rolenia, abiu, breadfruit, lilikoi, kumquat, macnut, sapote, mulberry and more. Great place for the kids to run free in safe private environment. The yard is well hidden from the street.

The property is home to some adorable geckos who faithfully gobble up mosquitoes that stray into the house. Geckos are found in practically every home in Hawaii and they complete the Hawaiian experience. If you are not ok with a few bugs in the house, you should consider a hotel in Hilo.

But the gecko's have a hard time eating up all the mosquitos so please bring your bug spray!

Hawaii is also the home to the coqui frog which is tiny nocturnal tree frog that sings it's song in the night, often quite loud. If you are sensitive to night sounds, please bring your earplugs.

Soak in the reclining tub in the bathroom with a view of jungle or enjoy the OUTDOOR shower surrounded by mango trees and tropical ferns.

Relaxing on the large lanai overlooking the lawn and orchard, you may spend your whole vacation enjoying the property and nearby tidepools, yet the house is the perfect base for exploring the unique natural and cultural heritage of the Big Island. Hilo is the orchid growing capital of the world and is home to several magnificent botanical gardens, museums, galleries, and restaurants. The main attraction of the area is Volcanoes National Park, a 45-minute drive away, where you can see active lava flows and witness the formation of the newest land on the planet. The closest town to the house is relaxed Pahoa, a quick fifteen minute drive away, with a grocery store, a large farmer's market, a health food store, banks, restaurants, and other conveniences.

All along the coast in the rural Puna District, you will discover special places to explore, from scenic parks to sheltered coves. Three miles from the cottage is exotic Kehena Beach, where palms and ironwood trees frame a lovely crescent of black sand. Two miles in the other direction is MacKenzie State Park, where steep lava cliffs form a rugged, rocky shore. MacKenzie Park also has interesting hiking trails and accessible lava tubes for spelunking. Five miles from the cottage is Ahalanui State Park with a naturally heated fresh/salt-water swimming pond. And, a little further down the road is Kapoho Tide Pools for some of the best snorkeling on the east side of Hawaii.?

Lani Pua House is the perfect eco-retreat, where you can really get away from it all. We have been proudly off the grid since 2001, operating with alternative energy - solar power and catchment from the rain for water. Because we are on solar, please leave your energy draining alliances at home. Examples are things that have heating elements such as blow dryers and curling irons. Coffee press is provided. Charging ipads and laptop computers is welcome. Wireless internet is provided, yet due to our remoteness, is occasionally down.

Leave your busy life behind and renew yourself in simple living. The splendor of old Hawaii and tropical paradise awaits you!

About Kelley Linn

Hi, My name is Kelley and I found this special spot of paradise in 2000. My husband and I built this sweet cedar home just walking distance from the ocean. My daughter was born here and spent the first 8 years of her life chasing chickens barefoot and climbing fruit trees. I loved that at 3 years old she could safely play outside in the yard while I kept an eye on her from the large lanai (porch) or from one of the many oversized windows. Our family is currently residing in Boulder Co., but love getting back to the island and our custom home as often as we are able. We hope you feel the love and good vibes that have gone into making this house a home.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This Eco-Home in Pahoa is the perfect getaway spot if you are looking for an adventure in one of the more remote areas of the big island. The location is beautiful and feels completely private and isolated with just a few neighbors. It was so great to have a kitchen with a gas stove and mini-fridge available, as well as a hot shower (outside) and bathroom (inside). This house is an excellent example of sustainable living, and the welcome manual in the house provided us with an explanation of how the house worked to collect and provide clean rainwater and plenty of solar electricity. There are some bugs (as there are everywhere on a tropical island) and windows are covered only by screens, and there is also no cell service within a 20 minute driving radius around the house.... but that's part of the adventure and it's what makes this place so fun and unique. Kelley answered all of our questions promptly and everything at the house was exactly as it was described! Check-in and check-out was easy, we used the lock-box as instructed. Would love to stay here again.

Fun and secluded

  • 5 of 5

My wife, 2 small kids and I stayed at the beautiful property in Match and loved it. The house is on a large lot close enough to the ocean where you hear the waves at night. Every morning I would go out with the kids to pick an avocado a couple of oranges and a few small bananas for breakfast. It is a nice house on the rustic side but we preferred that. When you sleep in the upstairs bedroom you can hear the soothing sounds of the creatures in the jungle behind the property. My kids really enjoyed exploring the jungle as well as the occasional gecko in the house. They also enjoyed the swing hanging from one of the tall beautiful trees on the lot. This was a huge hit. We've rented many homes on the islands and this was our favorite. We'll definitely be back.
