About Ben, Eve, & Scott

We are 3 Brooklynites (an artist/designer, an animation producer and a surprisingly cool lawyer) who first experienced Nosara a few years ago and have been coming back repeatedly since. It is just that kind of place: once you visit and you want to return.

We have made Casa Calmate into a stylish and functional home we look forward to visiting as much as possible. But also a place we are proud to share with our families, our friends and others looking for a cool and comfortable pad from which to explore Playa Guiones.

Ben, Eve, & Scott purchased this house in 2012

Why Ben, Eve, & Scott chose Nosara

Casa Calmate was completely renovated in late 2013. We gutted and replaced everything…from the electrical to the plumbing to the fixtures to the septic system.

The house now has a modern and spacious kitchen, dark stone countertops and a large gas stove with a full size oven. We like to cook, so it is well stocked with pots/pans, cookware and utensils.

The bathroom has been fully renovated and enlarged, with slate tile flooring and white subway tile, new fixtures and a large shower (which has a bench, as vacations should include sitting in the shower is our firm opinion).

There are two bedrooms: The master, which has a queen bed built out of teak, spacious closets, a full length mirror and luxurious bedding. The second bedroom, which is smaller, has a a cool custom designed built-in floating platform single bed, constructed from teak and steel.

There is a/c in the bedrooms, new ceiling fans, new windows, an alarm system, security bars and inset lighting. We have custom built the furniture throughout, including a huge comfy sofa (which can easily double as a single bed), coffee table and side tables.

The real heart of the property though, and where we enjoy spending most of our time, is the outsized outdoor covered patio. It is furnished with an amazing Indonesian day bed, large enough for 4 adults, teak picnic table for outdoor dining covered by a ceiling inlaid with tropical hardwood, industrial ceiling fans and accent lighting. Also a sweet hammock. The covered patio leads to a blue tiled pool well sized for the house featuring a large bench running its length for in-pool chilling. The pool is surrounded by a sun drenched patio area perfect for tanning and sipping tropical cocktails. Beyond the pool is an outdoor shower, inlaid with slate tile and affixed with a rainfall style shower head. The pool area is framed by banana trees and planters of flowers and colorful native plants.

What makes this house unique

Casa Calmate is set on a gorgeous and private property in the “G” Section, right in the heart of Playa Guiones.

2/3rds of the lot is a tropical garden, with hibiscus, rare pechote trees, wild flowers and natural plants. The rear of the property backs up to a protected nature preserve (originally intended to be a fancy golf course) ,which is now a howler monkey highway, providing an unusual level of privacy and a close connection to the area’s natural beauty and wildlife.

Fantastic. Just, fantastic.

Casa Calmate is just right. It's the perfect size, the perfect location. And just private enough. Nothing built directly on either side or across the street. But walkable to just about everything. Including the beach! Which was huge for us. Seriously, turn left or right out of the driveway and in a matter of minutes you have all the things Nosara has to offer. The security wasn't an issue, we just followed a few simple directions, never felt unsafe. We had Vultures, songbirds, howler monkeys, coati and armadillo roaming through the yard and hanging out by the pool with us all week. Josh was more than attentive and helpful in a few of the (non house related) issues we had and the whole thing was just amazing. The one ding was that the house does not have a backup water reserve. Due to drought conditions the town shuts off the water every night at 5 or so until 5 the next morning. It's fine, if you are prepared for it. It would just have been helpful to know that before we arrived. Just requires a little adjustment- like creating a small reserve for dishes and late night toilet flushing if need be. We liked it so much we have already booked our return.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the excellent review! FYI we are in the process of adding a back up water tank to the house prior to the next dry season, so hopefully no future guests will be impacted by the town water rationing. cheers

Great little house - perfect for two

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I spent a week in Casa Calmate and loved it. It's located close enough to walk to the beach and restaurants in north Guiones, but far enough from everything to be private. It was perfect for us - the kitchen had everything we needed (except a cork screw), the day bed and hammock provided some much-needed chill time, and the outdoor shower and pool were great for cooling off.

We'd heard that theft is a problem in Costa Rica and that break-ins are not uncommon. However, Calmate felt very secure and we never had an issue.

We both took lessons with Nosara Surf Academy and the instructors were great. We'd also recommend the Miss Sky Canopy Tour, and dinner at the Guilded Iguana. In fact the food was amazing at every restaurant we tried.

Josh and Francisco helped us out a lot with finding our way around and offering advice on local activities and attractions.

Close to beach. cozy.

Didn't have water from 5pm to 730 am every day. Stayed for 4 nights. Would liked to have known that before we arrived. They said it was that the city runs out of water occasionally. Couldn't use kitchen, shower during those times. Had to fill pots with water to throw in the toilet if we had to use it. Also please put a window covering on the front window. Maybe even a gate in the driveway. Otherwise , a/c worked great in the bedroom.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback. Our sincere apologies you were affected by the new town wide policy re: water rationing. For better or worse, you were our first guest who had to deal with this. The town policy was implemented just before your stay. We had no prior notice and it was to our knowledge w/o precedent. It effected every property in Playa Guiones and was in no way unique to our Casita. Had we known such rationing was to be implemented, we would have made sure you were properly informed. We have subsequently discussed with our property manager and in the future all guests staying in the height of the dry season (Feb/March) will be made aware of the possibility water rationing could occur. Further we will also make sure our guests are provided with extra bottled water at checkin as well as optimal water use strategies to mitigate the potential inconvenience. Pura Vida Casa Calmate

Nice and basic, but could use some extras.

  • 3 of 5

My husband, son and I spent 9 days @ Casa Calmate for Christmas and the New Year holiday. We mainly go to Nosara to surf and practice yoga, so the location of the house was great. We liked the pool and house layout, but found it lacking good cooking and serving options. There were few glasses and mugs and bowls. When we arrived there was 1 roll of toilet paper and not 1 condiment or food staple such as rice, coffee, or tea. We rent from VRBO often and have never had to start from scratch with salt and pepper, oil, spices, and paper products! All we can imagine is that the cleaning staff takes home whatever is left from the last renters...a little annoying. The owners should know this, and also that their kitchen is being pilfered.

Owner's Response: Sarah, thanks for the review. Generally the kitchen IS well stocked. While most of our guests are extremely considerate in terms of replenishing what staples they have used or replacing glassware they may have broken, unfortunately some others do not. So occasionally we do need to do a full restock - which we will be sure to do now. Unfortunately, we are not always immediately aware of these depletions, especially during the high season when back to back bookings are common. Cheers

Secluded, private, secure, and great lighting....great for a a single person or couple

  • 5 of 5

I've visited Playa Guiones many times in bigger, and some would say better, houses, but this one was absolutely perfect for me (single woman)! Even though it's down a DARK, centrally located back road, I felt safe there between the security system, the high quality bars on all windows, and good locks on the doors. It was nice being able to sleep at night with the screened windows open and not be fearful of someone sneaking into my home. I really don't think it's possible to break into this home quickly or easily, and I liked that. I kept my bicycle locked with a medium quality lock to a pillar there for 2 weeks and nobody swiped it, which I was happy about.

I loved how well lit Casa Calmate is. Most places I have stayed are quite dark in the interior, but the lighting in Casa Calmate is superb even in the bathroom. I do wish there were more window coverings, but at least there are curtains in the bedrooms. At night time, the lighting is very pretty, especially outside while having a glass of wine on the huge daybed.

Being that it's located down a quiet back road right near the Gilded Iguana, it doesn't get a lot of street traffic and dust. It's so secluded that the family of coatis felt safe enough walking through the property. The place is surrounded by tropical plants and flowers which attracted hummingbirds too. It was very peaceful and private.

Even when it was pouring rain, this place was enjoyable, just lazing around on the daybed or hammock underneath the huge covered patio. I love that daybed!

The house is well-equipped. However, there is no TV for those who need that....I certainly don't! There's a telephone to make locals calls with, an informative binder full of phone numbers, a remote for the alarm system, a safe, and a couple skimpy beach towels. If you require a big towel for the beach, you may want to bring your own. The place is outfitted with everything needed for cooking, except for a microwave, which is fine with me. The 6 burner gas stove is great. I liked how there's a water kettle for boiling water for tea. There's a coffee pot and blender for those who like their smoothies or coffee. Plenty of hangers in the closet. This place is good for a single person, a couple, or maybe a couple with one kid. Anything more than that would be too much.

It's about a 6 minute leisurely walk or 1 minute bike ride to the beach, with restaurants and surf shops right around the corner.

I really didn't want to leave

Cool Casita

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I stay for a week. The house and pool are a great size for two people. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking in and the A/C in the bedroom made for good sleeping. We had a car so we could reach all of the restaurants there are several good ones. We would surf in the morning and the evening with Yoga in the middle. We would Recommend this home..
