About Robin and Troy Suntheimer
Troy and Robin - Troy and I have lived in Newport News, VA for 19 years. since 1996. Troy owns his own construction business and I retired from the Navy in 2012 after 29 years of service. We have a son in the Navy and our daughter works for an outdoor recreation company.
Robin and Troy Suntheimer purchased this Lodge in 2013
Why Robin and Troy Suntheimer chose Independence
In Oct 2013, Troy and I traveled to Gatlinburg, TN and fell in love with the mountain views and cabin life and decided to find a cabin of our own. We found a cabin in Grayson County for sale and we contacted a realtor. We immediately felt at home in Independence and fell in love with our vacation home, the mountain it sits on, the area and the people. I think you will love it just as much as we do. We closed on 20 Dec 2013 and have been up there more times than we can count.
What makes this Lodge unique
When we first saw this lodge (cabin just doesn't do it justice) we noticed the numerous windows and the beautiful stain. We walked the deck which wraps around all but one side of the lodge and couldn't get enough of the million dollar view. We knew this was the place for us and hadn't even been inside. With the large master bedroom with its own deck, the loft with the amazing views, the high end appliances, wet bar and 22 acres we were hooked. The other two bedrooms are cozy and private. The finished basement isn't like most, as it has several windows and french doors that lead out onto the patio. While sitting in the hot tub you can watch the sunset over the mountains which is spectacular. The wood stove keeps the basement very warm. The living room has a beautiful stone fireplace, high ceilings and a mountain view. There isn't a room in the lodge that isn't cozy and comfortable. If you come to our home, you won't want to leave.

This home is wonderful. Nice rustic atmosphere yet modern amenities. Not much to do in the area, but we were looking for an area with not much to do! View off the main porch is quite spectacular. Area is peaceful and quiet; great place to relax. Would come back again if it were possible. The owners are friendly, easygoing, approachable and responsive.
Very comfortable stay!
The property is beautiful and has a great view of the mountains. There are many amenities including fireplaces, volleyball net, and horseshoe pits. Also, the main living on the area on the main floor is spacious. We would stay here again. Thanks!
The cabin was even better than advertised! Beautiful setting with magnificent views. The interior decor made us feel at home the moment we walked in. The owners were very responsive and accommodating throughout the booking process and throughout our stay. The cabin had everything we needed for a relaxing stay in the mountains. We would highly recommend for anyone looking for a secluded mountain get away.
Another Great Cousins’ Outing
We had an excellent experience once again at Black Bear Lodge! In spite of a snowstorm that almost kept us from coming and then a second snowstorm that almost prevented us from leaving, our whole group enjoyed the well appointed and welcoming cabin to the max. We will come again next year. We had no negative comments whatsoever! The owners are very accommodating and great to work with.
We will be back!
The best cabin experience ever
We enjoyed this cabin to the max! It was very comfortable and it had all the extras that made our experience the best ever! We will definitely be back!
Amazing lodge and view, filled with light, extremely comfortable and well equipped.
Our experience at the lodge has been wonderful all the way through. The lodge is very spacious, clean, filled with daylight and with an amazing view on the mountains. It is very comfortable, very welcoming, once you walk in, you just feel at home. The kitchen is VERY well equipped, with everything you need and more. You don’t even need to bring the basic salt, pepper, sugar, flour, dishwasher detergent and soap... Everything you can think of is there. You even have plenty of wood for the fireplace you can use freely. How nice ! The hot tub is very nice and facing the view. Robin has done her maximum to make sure our stay would be perfect. She always responded very quickly to our request and worked hard to solve a small issue. She is very nice to talk to and makes sure you’ll love the lodge as much as she and her family do.
There is a little trail in their property you can use. Otherwise you’ll have to take your car to roam around the area. For the hikers, there is a beautiful trail by the river. It is easy to visit beautiful waterfalls 15 minutes away by car. But no worries, Robin the owner has made a binder available at the lodge with all the info you need, about the lodge, restaurant, grocery’s, hiking, fishing, canoeing, etc...
I highly recommend this lodge if you want to spend some family or friend time away from it all.
At 2900 feet above sea level, this secluded mountain lodge sits on 22 acres on Pine Mountain in Independence, Virginia. We don't recommend motorcycles unless you are use to riding on gravel. The driveway is 700ft and can be challenging in some areas. The lodge is only 23 miles from Grayson Highland State Park where you will find hiking and horse trails that lead to beautiful waterfalls. Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain join Grayson Highland State Park to the North where you will find hiking, trout fishing, hunting and spectacular views. The New River winds its way through Grayson County and offers fishing, kayaking, canoeing, white water rafting and tubing. Black Bear Lodge is all about location. It is 5 miles from local shopping in Independence and the Historic 1908 Courthouse and easy driving distance to Galax for more shopping, restaurants, antiques, bowling and a cinema. If you want to get away from it all and still be close enough to civilization, then Black Bear Lodge is the perfect place for you. Independence and Galax are only minutes away and just a little further is Sparta, NC. For the outdoor enthusiasts, discover caves and spectacular waterfalls. Do you like to bike? Then you will surely enjoy the famous Virginia Creeper and Independence Bike trails that are relatively close. Horseback riding is also available. All you have to do is book a trail ride with a local stable. If you are a golfer, there are a slew of golf courses from which to choose. If you like river sports, then you are in luck. There is plenty of rafting, kayaking, and canoeing. For the fisherman, the New River offers a variety of fish and the ponds are stocked with trout. If you are tired of grilling, check out the historic Davis-Bourne Inn and tavern for dinner. For those who enjoy fine wine, be sure to visit Mt. Vale Vineyards in Galax. If you are here in the summer, be sure to attend the Grayson Wine Festival that is held every August and for those who stay with us in the fall, you can’t miss the Mountain Foliage Festival.
