About Robin and Troy Suntheimer

Troy and Robin - Troy and I have lived in Newport News, VA for 19 years. Troy owns his own construction business and I retired from the Navy in 2012 after 29 years of service. We have a son in the Navy and our daughter works for an outdoor recreation company.

Robin and Troy Suntheimer purchased this lodge in 2013

Why Robin and Troy Suntheimer chose Independence

In Oct 2013, Troy and I traveled to Gatlinburg, TN and fell in love with the mountain views and cabin life and decided to find a cabin of our own. We found a cabin in Grayson County for sale and we contacted a realtor. We immediately felt at home in Independence and fell in love with our vacation home, the mountain it sits on, the area and the people. I think you will love it just as much as we do. We closed on 20 Dec 2013 and have been up there more times than we can count.

What makes this lodge unique

When we first saw this lodge (cabin just doesn't do it justice) we noticed the numerous windows and the beautiful stain. We walked the deck which wraps around all but one side of the lodge and couldn't get enough of the million dollar view. We knew this was the place for us and hadn't even been inside. With the large master bedroom with its own deck, the loft with the amazing views, the high end appliances, wet bar and 22 acres we were hooked. The other two bedrooms are cozy and private. The finished basement isn't like most, as it has several windows and french doors that lead out onto the patio. While sitting in the hot tub you can watch the sunset over the mountains which is spectacular. The wood stove keeps the basement very warm and if you open a window, the wood stove will heat the main floor. The living room has a beautiful stone fireplace, high ceilings and a mountain view. There isn't a room in the lodge that isn't cozy and comfortable. If you come to our home, you won't want to leave.

Awesome Cabin!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful setting, private location, every amenity you could ask for. Would definitely consider a return trip. Had a "boys trip" with my two sons, aged 10 and 12. Great hiking from Grayson Highlands to My. Rogers.

Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed every minute of our stay. The cabin itself is as beautiful as the pictures, perhaps more so. It is very well maintained and has everything you could want for your stay. It is well furnished inside and out with an abundance of seating on the huge deck and patio. The hot tub is very large and is perfect for an evening soak! I wasn't familiar with this area of Virginia but it is perfect for outdoor lovers. We decided to take the New River Trail from Gambetta to Fries Junction and is was breathtaking scenery with some fishing along the way! We will definitely be back!!

beautiful !!!

  • 5 of 5

there were 6 of us that stayed for a long golfing weekend. we could not have been more pleased with the entire process. Robin was great to work with, even calling on the day of our arrival to be sure we made it and everything was to our liking. the lodge was extremely clean, like it was just built yesterday! It is obvious that these owners take a lot of pride in the upkeep of the lodge and surrounding property. Several of the group plan on bringing our families back at a later date to enjoy the peace and quiet, along with the amazing views form the decks. thanks again for your hospitality! Don

  • 5 of 5

I guarantee you will not be disappointed when you stay at Black Bear Lodge. Robin was a joy to work with and she went out of her way for my family. Robin thank you so much for opening your place for my family and others to enjoy. When you first walk into the lodge all you can say is wow this place is beautiful. It is super clean throughout the entire lodge. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you could want and need. The deck and view are amazing which we enjoyed everyday. If you are looking for a private and peaceful place to stay then you really need to stay here you will not be disappointed. The deer visited us everyday and were fun to watch. We will for sure be back for future vacations.
