About Robin and Troy Suntheimer

Troy and Robin - Troy and I have lived in Newport News, VA for 19 years. Troy owns his own construction business and I retired from the Navy in 2012 after 29 years of service. We have a son in the Navy and our daughter works for an outdoor recreation company.

Robin and Troy Suntheimer purchased this lodge in 2013

Why Robin and Troy Suntheimer chose Blue Ridge Highlands

In Oct 2013, Troy and I traveled to Gatlinburg, TN and fell in love with the mountain views and cabin life and decided to find a cabin of our own. We found a cabin in Grayson County for sale and we contacted a realtor. We immediately felt at home in Independence and fell in love with our vacation home, the mountain it sits on, the area and the people. I think you will love it just as much as we do. We closed on 20 Dec 2013 and have been up there more times than we can count.

What makes this lodge unique

When we first saw this lodge (cabin just doesn't do it justice) we noticed the numerous windows and the beautiful stain. We walked the deck which wraps around all but one side of the lodge and couldn't get enough of the million dollar view. We knew this was the place for us and hadn't even been inside. With the large master bedroom with its own deck, the loft with the amazing views, the high end appliances, wet bar and 22 acres we were hooked. The other two bedrooms are cozy and private. The finished basement isn't like most, as it has several windows and french doors that lead out onto the patio. While sitting in the hot tub you can watch the sunset over the mountains which is spectacular. The wood stove keeps the basement very warm and if you open a window, the wood stove will heat the main floor. The living room has a beautiful stone fireplace, high ceilings and a mountain view. There isn't a room in the lodge that isn't cozy and comfortable. If you come to our home, you won't want to leave.

A beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

Our three-generational family group spent a lovely week at Black Bear Lodge. The lodge is spacious, beautifully furnished, immaculate and situated with gorgeous views but surprisingly convenient to Galax and Independence. Loved the equipped-for-a-chef kitchen, the covered porches for rainy days, and the books, games, puzzles and full range of electronic entertainment for all ages. We had no idea there were so many options in "bear decor"! Special thanks to Robin for her prompt and full response when we got into a small pickle.

Blue mountain paradise

  • 5 of 5

We chose to stay even though we knew the drive to Virginia tech for graduation ceremonies would be a haul, after reading the reviews and the photos. Amazing! Perfect mountaintop paradise, and Robin couldn't have been more attentive from a distance before and during the stay.

Beautiful, spotless, and amazing secluded cabin!!!!

  • 5 of 5

My family was looking for a quiet mountain cabin to spend our last spring break together in a long time (my oldest child is graduating high school and going to the Air Force Academy). We live on Long Island, so we didn't want a beach vacation. My wife and I both grew up in rural upstate New York and wanted our children to experience the beauty of the mountains with a touch of luxury.

Robin and Troy's Black Bear Lodge fit this. First off, the whole process was very simple and hassle free. Robin is very attentive to any correspondence and has compiled a very detailed package containing anything from directions, where to eat, what to see, how to work the hot tub, etc... They surely get an A+++++++ for this.

Now the cabin...WOW....the drive there was long yet well worth it. Once you turn in the driveway you will be in awe. You have a nice drive up a hill (mountain) come around the corner, and there it is. The pictures do not do it justice. This place is absolutely amazing. My wife and I a very finicky about where we stay and are clean freaks. Folks...this place is SPLOTLESS!!! Everything is very well maintained and kept in immaculate condition.

The property itself is on 22 secluded acres with great views. There was nothing like eating your meals on the porch and looking at the surrounding sites. I loved getting up in the morning and drinking my coffee out on the porch. There are many things to do right on the property....volleyball, badminton, horse shoes, fires in the outdoor pit, board games, PlayStation, hot tub, and many trails on the property. You could literally stay on the property and not do anything else.

My family chose to do many of the outdoor activities. We did the hike up to Mount Rogers from the Grayson Highlands State Park ( 9 miles round trip)...lots of wild ponies there. We visited the waterfalls close to the cabin at peach bottom creek adjacent to the Grayson County Recreation Park, we went kayaking on New River from New River Outdoor Adventure (awesome time and cheap), and mountain biking at Matthews State Forest (8 mile semi-challenging single track). Overall, we had a great time.

I want to thank Robin and Troy for giving us the opportunity to enjoy their beautiful cabin and property...we were saddened as we drove away. We truly enjoyed our time and would not hesitate to return. I highly recommend the Black Bear Lodge to anyone looking for a luxury cabin rental. We will surely return. Thank you!

Breathtaking, relaxing, perfection

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I found this property purely by accident but when we looked at the photos we were captivated. We were a little unsure if it would truly be as nice in person as it appeared in the photos - but when we walked in the front door we were shocked because it was even nicer in person. It is one of those places that photos cannot do justice for. The home was very clean and had everything you need or want. When you walk out to the wrap around porch overlooking the mountains the experience goes up to a whole other level. Absolutely beautiful views. Walk out in the morning as the sun rises and the fog burns off the mountains and you will find yourself catching your breath. Wow.

Great spot to detox from life and work and get away and recharge. For us, this was the absolute perfect place for what we needed. We will be returning for sure.

I honestly cannot think of anything lacking at Black Bear Lodge. Kitchen is fully equipped and has plenty of dishes. Outdoor grill. Lots of outdoor furniture. Great hot tub. Two large tvs. Fireplace and wood stove if you are there when the mountain air is cold (both were spotless when we were there). There was even a family of deer that would visit in the morning. A++

Owners (Robin) we also an absolute pleasure to work with, VERY kind and attentive. I would give the owners and property MORE than 5 stars if I could have.

At 2900 feet above sea level, this secluded mountain lodge sits on 22 acres on Pine Mountain in Independence, Virginia. We don't recommend motorcycles unless you are use to riding on gravel. The driveway is 700ft and can be challenging in some areas. The lodge is only 23 miles from Grayson Highland State Park where you will find hiking and horse trails that lead to beautiful waterfalls. Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain join Grayson Highland State Park to the North where you will find hiking, trout fishing, hunting and spectacular views. The New River winds its way through Grayson County and offers fishing, kayaking, canoeing, white water rafting and tubing. Black Bear Lodge is all about location. It is 5 miles from local shopping in Independence and the Historic 1908 Courthouse and easy driving distance to Galax for more shopping, restaurants, antiques, bowling and a cinema. If you want to get away from it all and still be close enough to civilization, then Black Bear Lodge is the perfect place for you. Independence and Galax are only minutes away and just a little further is Sparta, NC. For the outdoor enthusiasts, discover caves and spectacular waterfalls. Do you like to bike? Then you will surely enjoy the famous Virginia Creeper and Independence Bike trails that are relatively close. Horseback riding is also available. All you have to do is book a trail ride with a local stable. If you are a golfer, there are a slew of golf courses from which to choose. If you like river sports, then you are in luck. There is plenty of rafting, kayaking, and canoeing. For the fisherman, the New River offers a variety of fish and the ponds are stocked with trout. If you are tired of grilling, check out the historic Davis-Bourne Inn and tavern for dinner. For those who enjoy fine wine, be sure to visit Mt. Vale Vineyards in Galax. If you are here in the summer, be sure to attend the Grayson Wine Festival that is held every August and for those who stay with us in the fall, you can’t miss the Mountain Foliage Festival.
