Beautiful cozy spot on the "quiet side". So glad we stayed there.

Amazing views and location, well equipped.

  • 4 of 5

On arrival we startled the bald eagle who flew off.

We spent the weekend watching the seal take plunges from a nearby dock and rear back up onto it, from the three huge living room windows facing the bay on two sides and the full length oceanfront deck. Cabin is very comfortable, beds reasonably firm, two armchairs, worked well for four adults. Quiet and private.

Gas fireplace extends into room and was very comfortable at 49F nights, so long as you keep the bedroom doors partly open. A small fan and extension cord would aid circulation.

Bring an extension cord and outlet strip, maybe a reading lamp- there are few outlets. Has full kitchenware , closet space, dishwasher, good water, a lot of bric a brac limiting your space to spread out.

Just south of the center of Southwest Harbour, you can choose to avoid the traffic and drive ten minutes south to several Park areas and trails, shore access, lobster shacks. Or head into town a mile or two North. Very convenient.

If you are elderly or balance-impaired be warned, the tall clawfoot bathtub is not suitable, with a tippy concave not flat floor, curtains all around, and *nothing* to hold on to equating to a balance challenge. For anyone else this is a marvelous place to stay.

Cozy SW Harbor Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in the cottage. It was pleasantly rustic and fitting in the environment - perfect for our short trip trip to Mount Desert Island. . We spent two days in Acadia National Park, which was our primary reason for visiting, but we were also enchanted with all the beautiful small towns. They each had there own delightful personalities. The weather was chilly and damp while we were there so we couldn't really enjoy outdoor views from the deck and fire pit, but the views from the large windows of the harbor were wonderful. The gas stove kept us cozy in the mornings and evenings. The bedrooms were small but the queen size bed was comfortable. The kitchen had everything you needed for cooking. The place was clean and well maintained.

Stunning waterfront view and a charming cozy size cottage yet needs repairs and furniture replaced.

  • 3 of 5

The expansive of view of the marina and the mountains beyond is the motivation to stay here. Each morning I would sit out on the deck with my coffee and feel as if I was in Acadia with woods on either side of me and the water in front of me.

During my stay, I learned the benefits of having a caring and local property manager. The pilot light in the fireplace/heater went out and Storey King was determined to get it fixed even thought it was a holiday and the emergency repair company was on vacation. He came and fixed it.

When I showed him that both beds squeak when you sit or lie on them, he agreed with me and said that he will replace the box springs. Unfortunately, this task was not completed before I left.

This is a charming cozy size Maine cottage which shows the wear and care of generations of happy family times spent there. When replacements were done (such as the windows and kitchen sink/faucet), they were replaced with good material.

The catch is that the house is old and needs repairs. Most of the house is covered in old wallpaper so I understand the hesitation to make the repairs. Cracks in three walls in one bedroom and water stains as well as cracks in the other bedroom. The bedrooms are small and the furniture is worn. The living room furniture is comfortable yet there is no full size sofa.

When I first arrived at the cottage, I had the pleasure of watching an eagle circling a tall pine tree in the backyard. The charm and “getaway” feel the cottage made me feel like I was stepping back to a slower paced time.

Very old cottage

  • 3 of 5

We stayed there for 7 nights.

Pros:

1. All cooking utensils and linens were provided.

2. Short distance to shopping area.

Cons:

1. The window behind the sofa was not properly sealed, so the first night, there were over 20 mosquitoes coming from the leak and my baby was bitten 6 times. His arms are still in bad shape now.

2. Because the mosquito problem was so severe, it's not possible to sit outside, despite that we burned the repellent torch on the porch. So don't think of walking around the house as well.

3. The cottage is very old, all the furniture seem more than 50 years old, the beds squeak when lying into, and some part of the floor does the same when stepping on.

4. The sink in the bathroom has hot and cold tap separately, so you got either hot or cold instead of warm water.

5. The curtains in one bedroom don't block light, so you have to get up when sun rises.

To conclude, if the mosquito problem is solved (which is not difficult, we stuffed toilet paper there and no mosquito in the rest of the days), the cottage is a good place to stay, if you like old building.

Owner's Response: Yes, we have mosquitos in Maine. The complaints about the screens is unfounded, as I inspected all the screens, and found no holes, or even toilet paper stuck in them. The cottage is older and quaint, but also charming. All amenities are fully functional. No complaints were made to me during their stay.
