Located 50 miles east of Asheville and 80 miles west of Charlotte, Lake James is a 6800+acre lake nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountain. Go swimming and kayaking or enjoy a quiet picnic on the private dock. Rent a boat, water ski or fish in the lake's cool mountain waters, or take a hike through one of the many trails in the nearby Lake James State Park. Avid golfers can check out the local Marion Lake Club Golf Course, a beautiful public golf course with lake views and an active railroad running through it! Enjoy nearby mountain activities such as gem mining, hiking, white water rafting, ziplining, and mountain biking, outlet shopping. Day trips abound with plenty of excursions to choose from: the Biltmore Estate in Asheville with shops and a winery, Tweetsie Railroad, Blowing Rock, Chimney Rock, Linville Falls and Caverns, and Grandfather Mountain. Fall and Spring offer beautiful color changes along the Blue Ridge Parkway, apple festivals, and local fairs. In the winter take advantage of the close proximity to Sugar, Beech, and Appalachian Ski areas for snow skiing and tubing. The master bedroom and bath of this 3 bedroom/2 bath home is located downstairs with 2 additional bedrooms and a bath upstairs. Natural, local materials are used throughout the home including reclaimed wide plank wood floors throughout the main living areas and local stone for the chimney, hearth and outdoor columns. The main living area with vaulted ceiling and exposed wood beams has a wood-burning fireplace. The 1.6 acre lot includes a meandering path down to the private dock on the lake where there are sweeping views of the widest part of Lake James. Enjoy the 2 kayaks on the dock to explore the lake and the island across from the property. Boat rentals are also available from several nearby marinas. Snowbirds welcome.

About Karen Hennessee

Originally from Florida we missed being near the water and sought out a lake front home getaway in the mountains. We found just what we were looking for just 90 minutes from Charlotte. We bought the property in 1999 and built on it 2002. While many a family and friend have stayed here with us, we opened it for rental in Spring 2014 as our 3 children were getting older and commitments were keeping us in town. We hope you will enjoy Lake James as much as we do!

Karen Hennessee purchased this house in 1999

Why Karen Hennessee chose Lake James

We love the view this piece of property has. We look out onto the widest part of the lake and yet because we are at the entrance of a cove, we get very little boat traffic. We also love that the land on the opposite side of the lake has been designated state park area and will not be built on.

What makes this house unique

We feel like we are in the best of both worlds here- we are on the lake but in the foothills of the mountains. In addition, each season brings us spectacular views and events. In the winter we ski and cut down our Christmas tree up here. In the spring we hike the Blue Ridge and see the budding flowers. Summer is spent on the lake swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding, and hosting family get-togethers. The fall brings the beautiful fall foliage. We absolutely love it here!

Amazing base camp for our vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This home was the perfect backdrop to our spring break - clean, spacious, excellent screened porch with lake view, and nicely situated on a quiet cove of Lake James. Plenty of nearby hiking and biking; kayaking and swimming from the house's covered dock. Would love to visit again!!!

A Great House Except for the Master Bed

  • 3 of 5

My family swam, boated and relaxed here Memorial Day weekend. It is a great house. Well stocked and in an ideal location on a quiet cove. We would consider staying again if they ever replaced the Master bed. I'd guess the bed is 20+ years old, b/c my in-laws have a similar hard and lumpy bed which is ancient too. All the other beds are perfectly comfortable. House is immaculately clean. Loved the dock, however if you have knee issues or a grandparent in your party the stairs to get down to the dock are very steep. We got a good workout were going up them.

The kayak and floaties provided were a nice treat. We rented a pontoon boat and agree with the other reviewer who said you need to lower the boat top before docking the boat. You cannot see the lake from the house, but there are great views from the dock.

Overall a great house, but it needs a new Master bed.

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay at our home over Memorial Day. We couldn’t agree more that it is a wonderful place to relax in a quiet cove. Thank you also for noticing the level of cleanliness that we strive to maintain. We appreciate you bringing the master bed to our attention as we are always looking for ways to improve our guests’ experience. We are sorry that you did not like the firmness of the mattress. It is the Classic Luxury Firm model from the Original Mattress Company and it sits on a box spring that makes it especially firm. The other mattresses in the house are Classic Plush models and do not sit on box springs. A new master bedroom mattress has been ordered as we now realize not all guests appreciate the firmness we desire. Thank you for visiting our home and we look forward to you returning for another relaxing getaway!

AMAZING!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

This home exceded our expectations!! We were looking for a nice quiet get away not far from Charlotte. My husband has visited the area many times and bragged about how beautiful the lake was. We really weren't sure we would be able to find a lake front house that would offer the amenities that we wanted. The homeowners have gone above and beyond to offer a home that makes you feel right at home when you walk in the door. The master bedroom is huge. The two bedrooms upstairs share a large bathroom. The upstairs is perfect for children or teenagers wanting to bring friends along. We loved the quiet dock with AMAZING views of the lake. Because the house is at the start of a quiet cove we had HUGE lake views but could swim off the dock in a "no-wake" zone. Bring floats because we relaxed for hours in the water. We also rented a pontoon at the Marina recommended by the owner and LOVED it. (Call to reserve the boat ahead of time) The dock is large enough for an pontoon boat but make sure to lower the canopy before bringing it in....the roof line was a little low. The house does sit up high off the lake so be prepared to steps to the water. The path is well maintained but be careful. You will feel like you are in a tree house with all the trees surrounding the home. You will not see the lake from the home in the summer becuase of the trees but we can only inagine what beautiful views we will have in the fall/winter. We will be back...hopefully in the fall. Karen at the Rental Company was wonderful!! She answered my emails within hours of sending them. This would be my dream home after retirement!!!!

Beautiful vacation home in the NC mountains!

  • 5 of 5

We've used VRBO for several trips and this property surpassed our expectations. The house is nestled in a beautiful canopy of trees and offers a wonderful view the lake. We found the house immaculate and cozy. The kids enjoyed picking blueberries from the trees planted on the property, playing off the dock, hiking at nearby parks and the mountains. Privacy abounds which we also enjoyed. The master is downstairs, while two additional bedrooms are upstairs. The house is flooded with natural light and the wide screened porch off the back is great for meals, game playing and reading. We liked it so much, we have been back a few times!
