About Jim Spencer

Lorine and Jim (in the picture, playing cards on our back porch) have been visiting Highlands since the '70s, and finally bought a home for their eventual retirement. Jim and daughter Jessica helped rebuild and expand the home, making it our perfect destination.

Why Jim Spencer chose Smoky Mountains

Ray's Roost (named after Jim's grandfather) is our dream location. Secluded, with a breathtaking Mtn view, yet in the middle of a wonderful town. Note that the weathervane on the roof came from Jim's grandparents home, then his mother's home, and now our home. This is why it is a part of our logo.

What makes this house unique

The panoramic view from the rear porch is what draws most people. It can be viewed from the covered and (optionally) enclosed porch. But the front porch provides a tranquil setting, and a BIG firepit for the evenings. Yet we are still only a mile and a half from town center.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Jim,

We don't have any complaints at all. Your home is fantastic. We have been coming to Highlands for the past 20+ years and have stayed in many homes and this is one of the best so far. We usually never stay in the same place twice, but we will be back at Rays Roost. It is big enough for our Family and your accommodating our dogs is great, and appreciated.

I have a property management, construction business and caretake 40+ homes on Lake Burton and can't help but being critical when we are the guest, but your place is perfect. I was pleasantly surprised rounding the corner and immediately noticing how well kept the house and yard were this early in the season. Thanks to you and your caretaker for making our stay ideal.

Kindest Regards Jamie.

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay with extended family this summer. Upon arrival, the house was as described and the photos are accurate. The house is in a convenient location, close to town and has a GREAT view!! We were all very impressed and pleased with the house and the overall experience renting from Jim. We all agreed that we would rent here again. Thank you Jim!!

Sublime

  • 5 of 5

Superlatives are almost too tame to describe the majesty of the view, the splendor of the sunsets and the ethereal nature of the mist coming up from the valley. Location, location, location. This is our second visit to Ray's Roost and we and our friends loved every minute. The home is spacious, comfortable and offers every amenity you would hope to find. The closeness to town is also quite a plus. We have friends with beautiful homes in Highlands and they envy our "home away from home" view. The week was exceptional and Jim Spencer is always looking to keep Ray's Roost top notch and we thank him for that.

Great place to stay with beautiful vista, close in to town and very comfortable home.

  • 5 of 5

Family of 10 with 6 adults and 4 children stayed for 3 nights while attending wedding in Highlands. The location is on a well maintained, gravel road that is about a miles walk or ride into town. The vista is of near and mid distance mountains with lush foliage. The home is beautifully landscaped and includes a fenced in area for dogs. It is quiet and peaceful with near neighbors but not too near. The house has obviously been recently modernized or newly built. Easy entrance and exit to property with plenty of parking.

The kitchen is well equipped. They have flat screen TVs with cable and surround sound that the kids appreciated. Plenty of space for sitting, eating and talking. Large porch that is partially covered that can be enclosed and has table and seating area for eating or just interacting with friends or relatives. Had information available of things to do and places to see.

We had considered staying in town but glad we didn't. It was actually cheaper and much more comfortable than staying in hotel rooms. The perfect place for our needs. Would recommend without reservation.
