About Jim Spencer

Lorine and Jim (in the picture, playing cards on our back porch) have been visiting Highlands since the '70s, and finally bought a home for their eventual retirement. Jim and daughter Jessica helped rebuild and expand the home, making it our perfect destination.

Why Jim Spencer chose Highlands

Ray's Roost (named after Jim's grandfather) is our dream location. Secluded, with a breathtaking Mtn view, yet in the middle of a wonderful town. Note that the weathervane on the roof came from Jim's grandparents home, then his mother's home, and now our home. This is why it is a part of our logo.

What makes this house unique

The panoramic view from the rear porch is what draws most people. It can be viewed from the covered and (optionally) enclosed porch. But the front porch provides a tranquil setting, and a BIG firepit for the evenings. Yet we are still only a mile and a half from town center.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Jim,

We don't have any complaints at all. Your home is fantastic. We have been coming to Highlands for the past 20+ years and have stayed in many homes and this is one of the best so far. We usually never stay in the same place twice, but we will be back at Rays Roost. It is big enough for our Family and your accommodating our dogs is great, and appreciated.

I have a property management, construction business and caretake 40+ homes on Lake Burton and can't help but being critical when we are the guest, but your place is perfect. I was pleasantly surprised rounding the corner and immediately noticing how well kept the house and yard were this early in the season. Thanks to you and your caretaker for making our stay ideal.

Kindest Regards Jamie.

Throughout the year, a cool mountain breeze is present, making the house feel noticeably cooler than many 'down the hill.' when the windows are open. The lane on which the house is situated is flat, making it a good place for short walks with family and pets. A popular walk of 2 mi is out the lane, and up Bearpen Rd. It is a large circular route, perfect for walking. Also, it is only 1.5 miles down to the center of town.

Our family had a wonderful and relaxing New Year's Weekend at Ray's Roost! The house was beautiful and comfortable for us! We even had a little snow! Having the fire pit and fire place were a bonus! We went through 2 loads of wood-delivered the day we arrived!! Thanks for a great start to 2018!! Will definitely return soon!

Lovely home in the heart of Highlands

  • 4 of 5

This was our first time to the Highlands area, and we fell in love. Every corner you turn is quant and lovely. What a gorgeous house as well. Very spacious and yet cozy. It was very well stocked and close to town. There are also nice trails walking distance from the house. The kids had a great time building a snow man out in the yard and having snow ball fights. It was a little too cold to enjoy the fire pit but it was very nice looking. The beds and furniture were comfy and the house was clean and inviting. We loved having our pup with us as well. We most definitely plan on returning.

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

This place has it all great view's 5 min from town and all the room in the house you could want. The home is well stocked and furnished very well. Big screen TV's in every room and very comfortable bedding. The deck in the back is very spacious with lots of comfortable seating to sit back and enjoy the breathtaking views. I would highly recommend this place.

Fabulous home with Majestic Views

  • 5 of 5

My family and I very much enjoyed our recent stay at Ray’s Roost! The home is gorgeous and the views are wonderful! The furnishings were comfortable and the outdoor spaces were fabulous! The house was well stocked and the owners did a fabulous job of leaving information regarding how to use all the amenities of the home, as well as highlights that the Highland’s area had to offer! I loved that we were able to have children and pets with us for our stay, so that the entire family got to experience our trip! I can not recommend Ray’s Roost enough and hope to have another opportunity to visit In the future!!

Great place, close to town and great view.

  • 5 of 5

The place is lovely with everything you could need while on vacation. The view is amazing. We walked everyday to town from the house. My husband I and both enjoyed that Jim had instructions for most everything so we did not have to guess or remember to do certain things in the house while staying there. The layout of the house is perfect for two couples and gives plenty of space. We will be back.
