Buddha's Cup Retreat at Leleka'ae Falls

Bedrooms 6
Property type estate
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Two Story 6 Bedroom, 4 Bath, 2 Kitchen Estate on 20 Acres- Perfect Group Retreat

Buddha's Cup Retreat at Leleka'ae Falls is situated on 20 acres above Hilo Bay providing sweeping 360 degree views of the Pacific Ocean, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. This unique retreat is perfectly suited for sports groups, reunions, an adventure vacation with family and friends or a corporate retreat and includes two 70' waterfalls on the property. This property is off-grid and totally self-sustainable featuring a state-of-the-art photovoltaic solar system and brand new back-up generator. Enjoy the beauty and aloha spirit of Hawaii's Big Island and leave a light footprint on Nature at the same time.

Natural light spills into every room through large picture windows and French 10-light glass doors highlighting the unique koa, chocolate heart and tropical ash hardwood floors as well as hand-carved balinese doors. Tastefully decorated accommodations are found throughout the space featuring 2 floors. Each floor includes a full kitchen, washer and dryer, three bedrooms, two living areas and two full baths.

The 1200' wrap-around 2nd floor lanai provides guests with plenty of outdoor space to take in the superlative views. The large lanai area off the upper level family room features a grill, an area for dining and plenty of lounge chairs to take in the sights and sounds of the waterfalls.

Mauna Kea can be seen on clear days as a towering backdrop to the property and Mauna Loa, the largest active shield volcano in the world, can be seen above the ridge. Plumes from the current lava flow from the Kilauea volcano vent can be seen in the distance, about 20 miles away.

The large waterfalls on the property feature two waterfall ponds in which to swim or raft, however, guests do so at their own risk as we have no control over the weather up mountain. Large boulders and rocks dot the landscape and the air is fresh and oxygenated from the water's flow.

There is about 2 acres of lawn surrounding the house on the property with a gazebo for waterfall gazing. About 5 acres of the property has been planted with Hawaiian coffee and you'll enjoy a fresh, hot cup for breakfast since coffee is provided for our guests.

This 3,000 sq. ft. estate-styled Retreat will accommodate groups of up to 16 and is 10-15 minutes up mountain from Hilo and 20 minutes from the Hilo International Airport.

The custom built estate home features exotic wood floors, carved interior doors, granite countertops throughout, custom Ash wood kitchen cabinets and large windows to bring the outside, in. The beamed, vaulted custom wood ceilings open up the upper level space - yet it's situated only 10 minutes mauka (up mountain) from Hilo Town shopping, sights, beaches and restaurants. Huge sumptuous villa located in a haven of peace.

  • 5 of 5

As soon as we reached the domain we felt like we were on heaven on Earth. Each room is furnished with sophisticated furniture and a marvellous view. We loved swimming in the nearby cascade (direct access and view from the house). We were delighted to have breakfast with the fruits we picked directly from the immense and lovely garden. Love to visit the horses ! Nolan, the manager was really kind and helpful.

Beautiful property about 15-20’ up the hill from downtown Hilo.

  • 4 of 5

Nolan (caretaker) was very helpful and gracious. He chopped a banana tree for us to have a whole bunch of bananas for us (and we gave the rest to family we were visiting). Also star fruit, oranges, lemons... we fed the horses and walked to the waterfall nearby. He said we could swim but in December we thought it was kind of cold. My grandmother can walk but we used a wheelchair for sightseeing, and Nolan had later told us that he could have put a ramp if needed. The only thing we found lacking was no microwave. We had a bunch of leftovers and made do with eating it cold or heating up in a pan. Also, by default of its location up the hill, it isn’t the quickest thing to “go grab fast food and come back”. Overall, very beautiful and charming. Would like to come back in the future!

Owner's Response: Aloha and we so enjoyed your group. Thank you for sharing the beauty of this property. We always strive to create an optimal Hawaii experience. Regarding the microwave, because we are off-grid on solar power, we had to eliminate appliances that surge and drain power. We chose blow dryers, toaster and blender over microwave. We found it drained too much power and degraded our guests experience. We'd love for your to come back in the future! Thank you for the feedback. Management

Amazing house!

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived, our entire family(16) was in complete awe of this house. The waterfall isn't just "in view" it is the center of focus. You can hear it at all times and the short walk down to the water was a daily must for the kids. There were plenty of rooms and bathrooms so everyone had enough space, with room and beds for so many more people! Every window has an amazing view of either the waterfall, the lawn(which is huge and has horses), and the ocean from the top floor. We actually had a hard time deciding to leave for activities because the house was so amazing and we wanted to enjoy it to the fullest😊? We all feel so lucky for the chance to stay here and are planning for future family vacations! Hilo is a short drive of 15mins but the atmosphere of this house is incredible and totally worth it...

Family Time Perfection

  • 5 of 5

This house is amazing; very spacious and love the view. We were extremely impressed that a home this large is "off-the-grid". There were definitely a lot of positive things about our stay this past week. Loved the wrap around lanai, handing out side with the waterfall and river as our backdrop. On many mornings, we got to see the I'o (Hawaiian Hawk) soaring and gliding above the river. Goats cruising the property. Horses frolicking in the pasture. Love the country life. Couldn't believe the supply of towels and linens they had available for our use. The double sink in the kitchen was a fantastic; made cooking and cleaning up so much easier. A great supply of pots and pans to use. For a home that is on catchment; couldn't believe the great water pressure in the shower. One downfall, was the generator would kick on at 3am and it was really loud/noisey. But again, we were okay with it because it was helping our environment and planet. Nolan, the caretaker, was a great guy. Always keeping in touch when we would be around the property. Very friendly and understanding. He definitely does a great job! My entire Ohana loved the house and were discussing making this an annual vacation, so you may hear from us again. Its a long drive from the main road to the house; but definitely worth the tranquility and peace the house provides. One the day we left we were blessed with a huge rainbow above the river and a beautiful I'l soaring; it was a great farewell ending to a great time at Buddha's Cup Retreat at Leleka'ae Falls.

If you want a quiet, peaceful serene place to relax then look know further!
