Buddha's Cup Retreat at Leleka'ae Falls

Bedrooms 6
Property type estate
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Two Story 6 Bedroom, 4 Bath, 2 Kitchen Estate on 20 Acres- Perfect Group Retreat

Buddha's Cup Retreat at Leleka'ae Falls is situated on 20 acres above Hilo Bay providing sweeping 360 degree views of the Pacific Ocean, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. This unique retreat is perfectly suited for sports groups, reunions, an adventure vacation with family and friends or a corporate retreat and includes two 70' waterfalls on the property. This property is off-grid and totally self-sustainable featuring a state-of-the-art photovoltaic solar system and brand new back-up generator. Enjoy the beauty and aloha spirit of Hawaii's Big Island and leave a light footprint on Nature at the same time.

Natural light spills into every room through large picture windows and French 10-light glass doors highlighting the unique koa, chocolate heart and tropical ash hardwood floors as well as hand-carved balinese doors. Tastefully decorated accommodations are found throughout the space featuring 2 floors. Each floor includes a full kitchen, washer and dryer, three bedrooms, two living areas and two full baths.

The 1200' wrap-around 2nd floor lanai provides guests with plenty of outdoor space to take in the superlative views. The large lanai area off the upper level family room features a grill, an area for dining and plenty of lounge chairs to take in the sights and sounds of the waterfalls.

Mauna Kea can be seen on clear days as a towering backdrop to the property and Mauna Loa, the largest active shield volcano in the world, can be seen above the ridge. Plumes from the current lava flow from the Kilauea volcano vent can be seen in the distance, about 20 miles away.

The large waterfalls on the property feature two waterfall ponds in which to swim or raft, however, guests do so at their own risk as we have no control over the weather up mountain. Large boulders and rocks dot the landscape and the air is fresh and oxygenated from the water's flow.

There is about 2 acres of lawn surrounding the house on the property with a gazebo for waterfall gazing. About 5 acres of the property has been planted with Hawaiian coffee and you'll enjoy a fresh, hot cup for breakfast since coffee is provided for our guests.

This 3,000 sq. ft. estate-styled Retreat will accommodate groups of up to 16 and is 10-15 minutes up mountain from Hilo and 20 minutes from the Hilo International Airport.

Another view of Hawaii

  • 4 of 5

I love staying on the east side of the island, and this is a beautiful contrast to Kohala. Feels more "real" . Anna was great to work with and Buddha's Cup accommodated our large group very well. We enjoyed the "off the grid" feel, and it was centrally located for our touristing.

A place for happiness and smiles

  • 5 of 5

July 16-23, 2018

My family of ten, varying in age from 11 to 71 (me) enjoyed every moment we spent at Buddha's Cup. The grounds are spectacular, complete with wild chicken, pheasant, pigs, goats and some pet horses to feed and love. The kids as well as the adults loved roaming the grounds picking fresh fruit and just enjoying the view and the sounds of the waterfalls in our backyard.

The house itself was large and cozy. We all slept well on the comfortable beds. The breeze kept the house cool even though there was no air conditioning.

Nolan, the estate manager, was absolutely delightful. We learned many interesting stories and facts about the island from him and he was always available with a smile on his face if we needed anything..

Hilo was only about a 10 minute drive. There is a large grocery store there as well as the farmers market and a fresh fish market on the pier. Pinapples is a great place for lunch or casual dinner. Richardson's Park has the Turtle preserve and snorkeling and swimming with black sand beaches. Buddha's Cup was a perfect location for many of the things we wanted to do and was always a wonderful place to come home to.

Thank you for sharing your home. None of us wanted to leave. I think we all left a little bit of our heart at Buddha's Cup Retreat.

One of the most beautiful, relaxing places on Earth

  • 5 of 5

This was my fourth stay at Buddha's Cup Retreat and I loved it as much as my first. The views are incredible and I love listening to the waterfalls as I fall asleep each evening. Noland, the property manager is always super friendly and helpful. There is no where else I would consider staying in Hawaii.

Paradise in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from our Hawaiian vacation. For the final 5 days we were at Buddha's Cup Retreat. The owner of this property has created Paradise in Paradise. We were in Hawaii to celebrate our 50th anniversary with all of our kids and grandchildren. Everyone loved this property. Some of our favorite features were: sleeping to the sound of and visiting the waterfalls, petting the horses, the chickens, the goats, picking bananas and lychees off the trees., the large grassy area for romping and playing. And the view! Each evening we could see the primordial display of Fissure 8. We brought high-powered binoculars and could even see where the lava was flowing into the Pacific Ocean. It was so amazing and captivating that we went on Craigslist and found a telescope for sale in Pahoa. We purchased it, used it, and left it at Buddha's Cup for future visitors to use. One of the best features of this property is Nolan. What a terrific fellow. He was so nice and responsive to any of our needs. The drive to town was very short and we were able to access everything we might need. This is a perfect spot for a family reunion.

Owner's Response: Mahalo Judy for your lovely review ! The guests that stayed here after you enjoyed the telescope, as well many guests to come, I’m sure. I’m glad you enjoyed the nature happening while you were there and were not afraid of it. And mahalo to you and your group for buying tents and supplies to take to the shelter area helping those that that have lost their homes. Mainland news, while reporting it correctly, make it sound like the whole island is burning down! We would love to host you again so please keep us in mind and so glad you appreciated the aloha of the ‘aina (land). Anna

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review! We've been told our photos don't do it justice and every time we get a review like yours, we know that to be true. You can't capture "sound". The sound of the waterfalls down the gulch is soothing and refreshing. We appreciated your group and thank you for leaving the house neat and tidy.

And along with beautiful resort beaches, Hawaii Island also has rugged, off-the-beaten-path sands that are wild, remote and rewarding.
