Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 28 nights

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom, Sleeps 4 (+1)

Overlooking a glorious white sand beach with fantastic views out to sea, this historic home is casual and bright. The rural community of Lockeport offers all the essentials and is just a stroll down the beach away. Peace, beauty, and comfort: sheer bliss! The house is perfectly situated: above the beach for wonderful views, set back from the neighbours for privacy, and walking distance into town. Discover how relaxing life can be when you are surrounded by nature, lulled by the constant rhythm of the surf and caressed by the ocean breezes. You'll notice the scents wafting from the wild roses that abound and the incredible freshness of the air.

There are two main guest rooms: the master bedroom with king size waterbed on the 2nd floor, and the single guest room on the main floor. There is also a single bed with chest of drawers and closet in the studio/office/laundry room on the 2nd floor. This room also offers a full size desk, a drafting table, an easel and a small selection of artist supplies: Ideal components for writers or artists looking for a getaway.

The kitchen is well equipped, linens and towels are provided and wireless high speed internet is accessible throughout the house. There is a TV/DVD player and a selection of movies and CD for guest use.

The summer rental week runs from Saturday to Saturday. June 30th to September 1st 2018 is high season with a minimum rental of one week. Otherwise the minimum stay is three nights. Check in time is 5 p.m.; check out time is 11 a.m. The rental includes private use of the two main floors of the house (the third floor attic is reserved for private storage and is off limits).

Despite its small size, the town of Lockeport has a restaurant (during the summer), a pharmacy, a bank (but no ATM), a grocery store/butcher shop (which does have an ATM), a liquor store, and a gas station. Lockeport events include the annual Lobster Festival in early June, Harmony Bazaar in July, and the Sea Derby in early August. The town of nearby Shelburne is less than 25 minutes away and hosts Founders Days in mid July, the Kayak Festival in mid August, and the Whirligig & Weathervane Festival in September.

While maximum occupancy is four persons there is a cot available which is suitable for a child or small adult. It is located in the ground floor reading room. There is an extra charge of $20 per night.

About Katherine Slack

I am the owner of The Papery (Bank Street) Ltd. in Ottawa, where we specialize in social stationery and beautiful paper. My dream of living by the ocean sent me on a quest to find my perfect spot. I traveled around the west coast, Central America and the eastern seaboard before venturing to explore Atlantic Canada. As usual, I took the long way around!

Katherine Slack purchased this house in 2004

Why Katherine Slack chose Lockeport

I soon discovered that to find the sound of the ocean I needed a beach for the waves to roll in on. I went to many beaches; most are quite secluded. This house, in but not on Lockeport (the town versus the island) has the best of both worlds as it is back from the road, has room to breathe, but is still really convenient.

The house was built in 1876. I uncovered the wide plank sub-floor, put in dormers towards the ocean and opened up the attic. It sits on a hill overlooking the beach with views of the open ocean. I can walk into town along the sand and back by the harbour boardwalk. A brook runs behind the rhubarb patch. There are wild rose hedges and a mature rhododendron near the back door. And it just feels right.

I have made many friends since moving to Nova Scotia and relish my time there.

Ocean getaway

  • 4 of 5

Fantastic home with loads of charm. The surroundings of the home are peaceful and relaxing with a fantastic beach just steps away. The owner was great at recommending places to see and eat as well as answering any questions we had. The properties maintenance man Kevin, is a really nice guy that is always available if anything should be required. A couple notes: The king bed is a waterbed and was personally not to my backs liking. Maybe a couple twins pushed together would be an improvement? The extra rooms only have single beds in them and could use a queen in at least one of them. Would be nice to allow for 2 couples or other family members (parents) to travel here together.

All in all, a great trip and we would definitely return.

Piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay in this piece of paradise. This house had plenty of space for a family of four, very well decorated with plenty of light. The kitchen was also well equipped. We enjoyed having all the basic ingredients required for cooking, including extras like herbs directly from the nice garden. Crescent beach, in front of the house, is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. It was well worth the journey from Montreal!
