We will return
The apartment was very comfortable, well equipped and near Mercado Central where you can find almost everything you need. The compound of 6 apartments was quiet and well kept by Maria, our maid. It is a pleasant walk to wherever you want to go in San Miguel. We like it so much we immediately booked for next year.
FABULOUS LOCATION AND APT.
This apartment offers you the opportunity to experience living in the heart of San Miguel de Allende. Its decor is truly warm and represents the beauty of Mexican crafts and culture. It is a brief walk to a huge fresh market, a delicious bakery, the market of the Artisans, lovely plazas and the amazing library which has two theaters and an open air cafe. The apartment is cool in the heat of the day and has a large kitchen for cooking local fare. The manager and maid are extremely accommodating and the laundry is a short walk and very reliable. The neighborhood is very safe and comfortable with friendly neighbors. I fell in love with both the accommodations and SMA and will return next year to take art courses and take part in the Writer's Conference, if I am able.
September in Animas 21
My husband and I spent 3 weeks in Sept in Animas 21. In spite of a record breaking rainy month we were dry and cozy in this spot. We used the gas fireplace to take the damp out of the air evenings. The kitchen, living room, bedrooms and baths are all charming and in good working order. As the month of September was exceptionally festive, we were glad for the quiet and privacy here at day's end. Proximity to our Language school was excellent, as well as to the Central Jardin and various markets. We loved the neighborhood and always saw something of interest, and could walk with ease all over the city.
Attractive and cozy but could be improved
I just spent two week at Casa Animas, and enjoyed the location (safe and secure in a pretty local neighborhood) and close to a good bakery and one of the best markets in the city. The apartment is well laid out and the owners have done a great job of decorating, with lots of pretty Mexican objects that gave the unit an authentic and cozy feel. However, I think it's important for people to know that there is virtually no natural light that comes into the unit from outside, so you need lights on even at noontime. However, the first floor location is an advantage when you are coming home with bags of groceries or purchases. The outside patio is large and attractive, but only receives partial sun midafternoon, so there is no option of sitting outside and having morning coffee in the sunshine as people in several of the other units do. The back master bedroom has no windows, but it was great for sleeping so I didn't consider this a disadvantage. There were also multiple maintence problems while I was there. I either had no internet or very spotty internet for the first five days, until someone finally came with a new modem. The back bedroom toilet never flushed properly, despite the maid's efforts to fix it, and the last two days we had no gas so no hot water for showers and no stove for cooking.
I would suggest to the owners that they provide a notebook of information for renters that many other owners in San Miguel do. It would have been nice to have an overview of the area and suggestions for restaurants, grocery shopping, etc. We were greeted upon arrival by the Spanish speaking maid, who was very nice, but really couldn't answer any questions. All in all, I enjoyed my stay here but I think there is room for improvement, especially in the area of maintenance.
Excellent Location, Excellent Value
Great two bedroom in a great location of San Miguel. The street is private, quiet and safe. The condo is a really nice place to stay and an excellent value. Comes with my strong recommendation. enjoye San Miguel!!!
OK but not great
The description is accurate and indeed the apartment does have many nice features. It was a nice large space and the convenience of a kitchen and living area was greatly appreciated during our one week stay.
Unfortunately, the apartment was not very clean upon our arrival. When the maid did come the following day, she swept the floor, took out the trash, used a damp cloth on the counter-tops, and possibly a few other things, but all for only about an hour. Anything outside of her normal routine was therefore rather dusty, especially the surfaces above eye level, ledges, etc. The rugs were quite dusty too, but easily removed. On a positive note, the management was hiring a new maid starting the following week. Still, it might be a matter of poor supervision.
The master bedroom and bath received no natural light or ventilation. There were some ill-conceived skylights that were illuminated by the second floor apartment. This means that the otherwise dark bedroom could be flooded by light unexpectedly in the middle of night. The main skylight had therefore been covered, to prevent this from happening, and the others were an occasional annoyance. A dark and poorly ventilated bedroom / bath combined with less than perfect housekeeping is a bad combination and made the room somewhat uncomfortable to be in. I had some allergy issues while there and suspect this was the cause.
The refrigerator was occasionally quite noisy. As it is essentially in the center of the living space, it was frequently an unwelcome disturbance. Turning it off when in the living area, and back on later, is a good work around however.
I had the feeling that the apartment was neglected by the owner, that he probably hadn't been there in quite a while. It appeared as though no one has the ambition to do a thorough cleaning or the authority to throw anything away. It seemed that renting it now and then is more of an afterthought than a goal.
The owner's agent (via email) was very helpful and friendly as well as both English speaking managers who we met while there. No complaints there.
I can't recommend the apartment, but it is suitable short term in a pinch. It might also be suitable long term if one spent a day or two doing a thorough cleaning, putting more things in the storage closet, and organizing the place. One of the on-site managers could probably loan you a vacuum sweeper.
Be aware that there might be cars blocking the narrow streets so expect to walk a ways with your bags.
