About Melanie Kozol

I am an artist and teacher. We have lived and raised our children in this wonderful carriage house since 1993. Our children are now grown so we have returned our house to a 2-family residence.

Melanie Kozol purchased this apartment in 1993

Why Melanie Kozol chose Clinton Hill

We bought our home because of its architecturally inspired interior and superb location in Clinton Hill. The house has a contemporary open plan with artisanal plaster walls and abundant light throughout. It has been a great home for our family and a real oasis in New York city. My husband and I work in Manhattan and this location makes it easy to commute by subway, bike or car to the city.

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment is light filled, modern, clean and newly renovated. It has all the benefits of a home away with high ceilings, natural light and plenty of space to stretch out.

A clean beautiful home with nice touches to make it warm and comfortable.

A very pleasant experience using this home for our week. The owner, Melanie, was helpful and pleasant whenever we needed anything. Highly recommend this VRBO home to anyone going to Brooklyn.

While it was quite artistic, it was too difficult for a middle aged couple to be comfortable in.

  • 2 of 5

Very uncomfortable but owners refused any, even partial refund. Bad for disabled, not just wheelchair bound, as they stated. Aluminum Toilets no lids, practically on floor, 2 long flights of stairs! Could not get any $ back to seek new place.

Owner's Response: It is unfortunate that our guests did not look closely at the numerous photographs of the duplex we provide on our site. The photographs show the staircase from second to third floor, similar to the one from ground floor to second floor. They are typical of Brooklyn brownstone buildings and are - of course- NYC code-compliant. Other photos show the stainless steel toilets, for which we provide a cushion seat. Our site also informs potential guests that this modern duplex apartment is not suitable for wheelchair use. It is curious - given the now-known degree of disability of one of the guests - that we were asked no questions prior to booking about the compatibility of our apartment and these physical conditions and limitations. We remained entirely uninformed about her disabilities until their arrival. As it became known that our guests were unhappy with their accommodations, specifically the challenges of the stairs, we met with them to discuss a possible resolution. We agreed to re-list the apartment to possibly cut short the length of their booking. Beyond this initial discussion, no further comments or exchanges were made and they departed at the conclusion of their booked visit.

Pleasant duplex

  • 4 of 5

Stayed two weeks in this nicely decorated two-room apartment on two floors. Well located if you like Brooklyn and don't mind moving around NYC by subway (C-line station very close, you can be in Manhattan within 10 minutes and you can easily reach JFK). Only two caveats, the WC on each floor is only separated by light curtains from the room and the windows are not well insulating from the noise of the road which, fortunately, is not a heavy traffick street. The owner said they might try to fix the latter feature. Otherwise, well equipped, tastefully renovated, with quite a few great books on the shelves and, not negligible, an excellent DVD series on the history of NYC! Many small shops, cafés and restaurants in the neighbourhood. We had an enjoyable stay.

Lovely apartment and wonderful host in Clinton Hill

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was wonderful: spacious, beautifully decorated and furnished, very efficiently organized kitchen and Melanie was the best host possible. She was always attentive, took care of everything we needed and was charming and welcoming.

The layout of two floors allowed us to have guests for a couple of nights in the living room, where they had their own toilet for privacy and comfort.

Excellent location: easy access to subway trains to Manhattan, 10 minute walk to Prospects Park, Green Point Park (Saturday Farmers' Market), Atlantic Center, BAM, etc.

Excellent loft style apartment in Brooklyn

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Melanie's loft style apartment for 18 nights in July. The apartment is as described and in the photos - a real find on a leafy street in Brooklyn. It's bright, spotlessly clean, spacious and is really well equipped with appliances, crockery, cooking utensils, towels, bedclothes, etc. - all these make a stay real easy. The art and the decorative items in the apartment really set this apartment apart from the usual bare-bones rentals. Melanie even supplied garbage bags, toilet rolls, kitchen paper, cleaning products and basic food items - all the things that you generally have to buy when renting a place, but end up only using one or two of them! The air conditioning worked really well, but if you rent in the spring or fall the windows also open which is a plus.

We stayed here with our adult daughter - who slept on the futon sofa bed in the living/dining space. There is also another bed in the bedroom. Our bed was great - just like we like it- firm. As other reviewers have said there are no doors in the apartment, but there is a bathroom on each floor so we just went to that floor if we wished for total privacy. We were in New York visiting our other daughter and so I cooked a bit which was easy given the well stocked kitchen. The dining table easily fits 4/5 people and was my favourite piece of retro furniture in the apartment. However if you prefer not to cook there are loads of coffee shops and restaurants within 5-10 minute stroll.

There are 3-4 grocery stores within a five minute walk. The bus to downtown Brooklyn runs from a block away as does the C subway. The C brings you into Manhattan in about 10-15 minutes. There is free on street parking too which is great given the cost of parking generally in the city.

Overall I would recommend this apartment to anyone wanting an alternative to a hotel room. To me living like a "local" really adds to experiencing a city and staying in a loft style apartment is so New York!
