Fun place to stay while experiencing historic Nauvoo.

Property was clean and fit our family of 6 well. Great yard and convenient to historic sites. Nancy was very friendly and stayed in touch via text, which was nice. The house had some unique historic features which just added to the experience of trying to think about how the people in the 1800s lived.

This home has been wonderfully restored. It is cared for down to the finest detail. The antique furnishings are beautiful. The owners were so kind. They brought us fresh vegetables from their garden and warm cookies. We wish we could have stayed longer. It really had a country feel, but close to all the Nauvoo sites. It's easiest if you get groceries before you go to the house, but we didn't and it was fine to drive out of nauvoo to get them. All around a wonderful stay. I would highly recommend staying in this home.

Beautiful historical home

  • 5 of 5

First off, Nancy and Lon (the owners) were beyond kind and helpful. Lon took us on a personal tour of the house, and told us all about its history. Nancy shared produce from her garden as well as some ingredients we needed.

The house is furnished with antiques, and is very old. One of my daughters was over the moon with all the furnishings, dishes, it's location in the country, etc. Another daughter was bugged by the squeaky floors, spiders, inconvenient light switches, lack of a dishwasher, and lack of wifi.

So it depends on what type of person you are. Personally I thought it was wonderful for a few days, I enjoyed the distraction-free time with my family, and loved sitting on the swing in the front yard at night watching the fireflies.

Just a few things I wish I had known-- there is wifi, but it is pretty spotty. I was never able to connect. There is no grocery store in town. The closest store is 20+ minutes away. And there are a few dining options in town, but not many. So bring everything you need. There is a Walmart in Keokuk, about 30 minutes away. There is no dishwasher, so bring paper products or be prepared to wash all your dishes by hand. There is a place in town that does takeout pizza that's supposedly good. We heard that cell phone coverage is spotty unless you have Verizon (which we do, and we never had a problem).

I loved the original details of the property, especially the family pictures from that time period.

The master bedroom bed was so comfortable and we slept very well. We never could get the internet to show up on our devices. I understand that Nauvoo internet is spotty. Luckily we came to do other things than be on devices, but it was non existent for us. We love Nauvoo, and it was interesting to live in a period house for a few days. It was a bit more period authentic than I expected.

We stayed in the Mix house for 3 nights with our family of 5 (including 3 teenagers). We walked in and instantly had smiles from ear to ear! The house was so cute, furnished in pioneer style, but had all the amenities/necessities necessary. With an older house like this you might expect a musty/old smell and feeling but that was not the case -- it felt fresh inside and smelled wonderful! The beds & pillows were so cozy and we slept so well each night! My kids LOVED the yard and we spent a lot of time outside enjoying the fresh air, chirping birds (we even spotted some red cardinals!), and beautiful countryside views. Just a wonderful, relaxing spot to settle during our time in Nauvoo. We were there over Easter and the owners (who live next door) delivered an Easter basket with eggs full of candy. My kids loved it! // A few more notes: Loved that we had access to a full washer/dryer. The kitchen was small but had everything we needed. We did have to kill 1-2 big spiders inside the house each day - you are in the country, so it is to be expected. There was no cell service, and we were never able to connect to the Wifi. It was a little frustrating at first, but it ended up being a good thing allowing us all to be fully present with one another. There is a TV with satellite & a DVD player -- we watched movies each night. // We were sad to leave the house and continue on our road trip. Even my husband who is not into the "vintage" kind of thing really enjoyed the house. I definitely recommend the Mix House if you are staying in Nauvoo.
