Briar Lodge: Discover this rare shorefront offering within walking distance of Bar Harbor’s village center! Recently renovated and redecorated, Briar Lodge provides a unique shorefront opportunity with a rich history. With its private location adjacent to the southern end of the Shore Path, the echoes of the Gilded Age of Bar Harbor’s cottage era reverberates in the surrounding landscape. Once the servant quarters to The Briars Estate, built by J. Montgomery Sears, Briar Lodge is an original William Ralph Emerson design, with an interesting “upside down” layout. The main estate, torn down in 1968, was host for two summers to the John D. Rockefeller family in 1908 and 1909 and the birthplace of Nelson Rockefeller in 1908. The home’s second owner, Ned and Evelyn Walsh McLean, were the proud owners of the Hope Diamond!

APPLIANCES: Standard kitchen appliances, washer/dryer, Cable TV, Internet Service. Sorry, no dishwasher.

EXTRAS: Shore Path access.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to its steep staircase, this home may not be suitable for those with very young children or who have difficulty walking.

Very nice cottage with an amazing view

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Briar Lodge for a week in June, 2016. The Lodge, which is a cottage that housed the staff for a large mansion that has was torn down years ago, is on the ocean in Bar Harbor. It is a very short walk to shops and restaurants. It was a perfect fit for our family, with two bedrooms and a main bath on the ground floor, a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, dining area and living space on the second floor. It is a great cottage - clean, nice views (especially with a coffee on the lawn in the morning watching the lobster boats) and right on the shore path. Wifi worked well, and the kitchen was well appointed.

The gardens and lawn are pretty expansive, and the history of the property is very interesting. I don't believe that the cottage has air conditioning, which may be the only downside, though the weather was perfect during our stay.

Finally, the cottage is a short walk to town, which was very convenient. We left the car at the cottage when we went out to restaurants at night, which was very helpful.

Overall, it is a great cottage with a nice location and we will hopefully return again.

My perfect Bar Harbor vacation

  • 5 of 5

I've visited Bar Harbor many times, but usually stay in waterfront hotels. However, when I travel elsewhere, I usually rent a house or condo and decided to do that this time. I missed the extra space, the privacy and access to a kitchen.

This location is, in my opinion, perfect. It is private yet an easy walk to restaurants and shops. The view, as the other reviewers stated, is amazing. The perennial gardens are lovely. The house is beautifully maintained and all furnishings are tasteful and updated. The owners (or managers) have thought of everything - tons of fluffy towels, detergent for the washing machine, lots of comfy furniture and pillows, guide books and maps, really good kitchen equipment.

I hope to return next year (and the year after...)

This lovely historic home is only outdone by its dreamlike setting overlooking the Porcupine Islands. This property is truly special. The ever present views are not to be taken for granted. Having a vacation spot with this privacy and location and view, and still being considered "in town" is a dreamlike combination. We loved every second. Seeing and talking with the owners about this special place was an even better experience. We love this place.
