From its’ world famous boardwalk and beautiful beach to the shopper’s paradise of Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice offers a unique and vibrant mix of activities and attractions. Originally called “Venice of America,” Venice was founded in 1905 by developer Abbot Kinney as a beachfront resort town. Kinney’s initial vision of creating a cultural mecca was set aside to accommodate the public, and Venice became the “Coney Island of the Pacific,” complete with an amusement pier and a miniature steam railroad. Kinney also created a system of canals and imported gondolas and gondoliers from Venice, Italy.
Today, Venice is one of the most popular (2nd in the state to Disneyland) destinations for visitors and locals alike. From its days as home to Beat Generation poets and artists, Venice continues to be an important Los Angeles cultural center. Whether you’re looking for some fun in the sun, a unique shopping experience, or a wide variety of dining choices or an evening of art and music, Venice has it all.
While Venice's claim to fame may be its beach culture, its’ most stylish block, Abbot Kinney, has become a desired destination in its’ own right. The heart of the Abbot Kinney district is the area along Abbot Kinney Boulevard between Venice Blvd. & Main St. The area includes numerous shops, galleries and many cafes, bars and eateries. On the first Friday of each month an additional attraction are the dozens of food trucks serving gourmet food at great prices. All of the local shops remain open late into the night.
Ocean Front Walk/the “Boardwalk”
There is no denying that the main attraction is the world famous Boardwalk. All year round (especially during the summer season and on weekends) you will find street entertainment of all kinds. Street performers include singers, dancers, musicians, jugglers, acrobats, mimes, comics, magicians, prophets, fortune tellers, and untold others. You will see people with tricolor hairdos, painted faces, weird tattoos, and outlandish clothing--or lack of it. It is a virtual sidewalk circus! It is also an open air flea market with an eclectic variety of goods and services. Along the walk you will also find an assortment of retailers, including souvenir shops, bike rental outlets, arts and crafts, restaurants and snack shacks. A popular option is to sit at one of the ocean-side restaurants to do some serious people watching. There are also playgrounds, skate parks and courts for basketball, handball, and paddle tennis. Muscle Beach is an infamous outdoor weight room (made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger) where fanatic bodybuilders pump iron in a public show of strength.
The 3 mile ocean beach offers activities for the entire family. If lounging in the sand is not your bag, surf on the crashing waves, ride a bike or roller blade along the path to Santa Monica and beyond.
Venice's canals (complete with ducks) are home to some of LA's most eclectic residential architecture. See tiny bohemian cottages next to million-dollar ultra-modern houses. The canal streets are between Washington Blvd. and Venice Blvd.
