Why Ron & Susan Oleson chose Golden Hill

We have a vacation home rental & realized our geographic apartment location would be great for its accessibility to all that San Diego offers. We have a century home in front of the apartments & really enjoy San Diego's great sites like our Ball Park, just 3 minutes away & the Gaslamp.

What makes this apartment unique

Accessibility is key and the airport is so convenient due to our travels that we know those coming to San Diego can benefit from this travel ease.

This property is in the middle of San Diego. The walls are paper thin. I literally heard full conversations in other units. I am sure other people heard more of my family than I would like. It is not family friendly. The parking is TERRIBLE. you will have to circle the block a few times and then park 2-3 blocks away, not so much fun with 2 young children in tow. The queen bed made sooo much noise just sitting on it, we feared getting in would wake up my kids, I am not talking about anything else besides literally getting in and out of bed and turning over, which you will have to do quite a bit if you aren't used to sleeping on something with less cushion than a plywood with some batting. Worst mattress of my life. There were smokers on the patio which isn't great for anybody and some creeper totally checking me out from the next door unit (probably wanted to see who was making all the noise...since he most likely heard EVERYTHING, we sure did).

Not what I expected

  • 2 of 5

Cons: Air conditioners did not work well, street parking was not easy to find unless you parked at 7am and stayed in all day. Otherwise after five it was parking blocks away and walking in a shady neighborhood. Bed was very hard. Garden area was not kept up and needed attention.

Pros: laundry on site was nice, store, diner and bakery nearby were really good. Excellent taco stand close by.

Check in was easy but I called owner to see if we could check in early and never received a call back. I was trying to save money on the rental and I guess I got what I paid for but in retrospect, should have gone with a hotel with available dedicated parking closer to the beaches.

A nice affordable place with all the conveniences of an apartment

  • 4 of 5

This modestly updated older one bedroom apartment unit was well supplied with all amenities you can find at home. The unit is one of several units located behind a house. The pathway to unit had an amazing tropical feel with the many plants and flora providing overhead shading. There are several separate seating areas for semi private lounging along the pathway. The free laundry was very useful. Our unit came with a garage that was a bit tight but able to fit our Honda Pilot SUV which was a plus considering street parking near the property was limited. There are portable A/C units that were a bit loud and not cooling very efficiently but otherwise worked. The location of the property in the Golden Hill neighborhood at first glance seemed sketchy but turned out to be very friendly and pleasant with many local eateries and markets. Humberto's around the corner has great Mexican food on a budget. Krakatoa has good coffee and 55 Thai Kitchen is good. Panchita's bakery and Krisp grocery market is walking distance if you wanted make something at home. There is one drawback if you are a sensitive sleeper the property is located along SD airport commercial jet flight path. Overall nice property in area that has culture and signs of revitalization.

The apartment was clean and comfortable in a beautiful setting at the back of a lush garden. The physical location within San Diego was extremely convenient. Had a great time and would definitely book again!
