AVAILABLE AGAIN!!!! Our beautiful lakefront home is available for the 2016 season. Our house presents a modest demeanor from the roadside but opens up to two floors of windows, doors, decks, and porches facing a remote mountain lake. It is one of the only properties on the lake that has an easy, gradual slope to the water and a shallow access for swimming.
We have 3 bedrooms and 3 baths and a spacious living room, dining room, and sunroom. The kitchen is newly remodeled and has all major and small appliances including a five burner gas range with two ovens. Both the master suite (king bed) and the guest suite downstairs (twin beds) open to their own secluded porches with views to the lake and have private baths. The 2nd guest room is on the first floor and has an attached bath. There is also a sunroom with a sleeper sofa.
With over 1000 sq ft of decks and porches this is truly and outdoor oriented house. The covered porch outside the master bedroom has a swinging bed, the downstairs covered patio has an old fashioned swing, an outdoor shower, and a chimenia for cool evenings. The huge screened porch off the living area has seating for a crowd and a beautiful view of the lake. The house is fully heated and air conditioned (two separate units) and has a wood burning fireplace (with a gas lighter) in the living room. The outdoor grill (on the upper deck) is piped directly to the propane source.
No docks are allowed on Apalachia Lake and the National Forest protects the shoreline. We strive to be good neighbors to them and use an anchored pontoon boat with a swim ladder. This is also a great platform for sunning and relaxing. We also have a small beach at the lake front with a firepit and canoe storage (summer). We leave two canoes for our guests to use.
We are retired professionals who have owned this home since 1999. We are very outdoor oriented and love this area for its paddling and hiking opportunities as well as just driving around soaking up the beauty. We travel over 1/2 of the year but always come back to the lake. I am an outdoor recreational writer and have written a number of booklets about the area including The Complete Scenic Circle: Outdoor Day Trip Destinations from Murphy,NC. I also wrote Daytrips from Coker Creek: Backroads & Adventures In Southeast Tennessee, and two of the Benton MacKaye Trail Guides (TN/NC, and GA). We will leave plenty of maps, books, and information about where to go and what to see. We want to be sure that our guests don't miss anything.
Dr. Elizabeth F. Carter purchased this house in 1999
We are natives of the Florida Panhandle and began coming to this area in the early 1970's to paddle the whitewater rivers. We camped in the summers and explored with our children. We knew we wanted to have our own home and looked for a place central for paddling but also on a river or lake. We first came to Lake Apalachia in 1994 and rented a house for several years before buying this house.
It is so quiet here. It is possible to go for an hour without hearing any 'human' sounds. We are also in one of the few 'dark spots' left in the Eastern USA. Our night sky is incredible and our sunrises and sunsets are magnificent. We love to go for a drive and stay on backroads all day just looking for animals, flowers, rock formations, unique old buildings, historic sites,, waterfalls, whatever. Our house has so many wonderful places to just sit.
Everything we could have asked for and more! We peacefully relaxed around the fire at night and went visiting nearby towns during the day. The owners graciously answered all our questions and were very pleasant. If you are looking for a place that is peaceful and quiet with all the comforts of home on a beautiful lake, this is it. We loved it.
My husband and 2 daughters and I came to stay in late May 2016, in late pre-season. The home is very spacious and has plenty of areas to relax, in company or seclusion. Everything was clean and ready for us on the inside of the home. The decks and porches needed some spiffing up as we were the first to arrive for the season. The decks and porches have a lot of square footage so expecting these to be clean and free of all leaves and debris would be a lot to expect of the property manager and we did not mind helping by sweeping it and cleaning the table surfaces as anybody would have to do in their own place. It is located in a remote area so make sure to bring all the grocery supplies that you expect to need and then settle down for a very peaceful and inviting space. The lake water was so clean that I felt as if I could swallow it if it got in my mouth while swimming (but didn't of course) and it tasted so sweet and pure. There was not much boat traffic and we were able to do quite a bit of swimming. We also enjoyed the canoes and brought our own kayaks to use also. The main porch was great for having outdoor meals and also for just relaxing and catching up on some reading. We would love to return in the future and hope to bring my in-laws as there is ample space for a large group. I would definately recommend this place, especially given the price for what you get!
A few cons to consider so you won't be surprised:
The hot tub was not in working order.
We did see a live scorpion downstairs, but we had seen one on a stay in Costa Rica, so realized that paradise comes with a few creatures who like the area, too!
I stayed here the first week in July with my two teenage kids and we had a nice, relaxing time. It was exactly as it was described in the listing.
The lake was peaceful and serene. We went out in both canoes several times and we were really grateful that they were made available to the tenants.
The accommodations were spotless and we had everything we needed. It's obvious that the owners take great pride in their home and work to keep it in good shape.
This locations is very remote but we were able to go into town several times. The last night we were there a huge storm came through, we lost power, and the roads down the mountain were blocked. The power was returned early morning and the neighbors got together to clear the road and they even let us know when we could safely leave.
All and all it was a great trip for us and the listing accurately describes the house and the property. I had no problem communicating with the owner and the caretaker came by to check that everything was OK.
There are so many things to cover here so I will use point form:
- The owner is not available to help with anything and the 'local property contact' they provide you with does not answer phone calls or emails
- The same 'property contact' mentioned above is also the cleaning crew. We arrived past our check in time and the place still was not ready. She was still 'cleaning'. There had been a storm the night before and all of the decks were strewn with twigs that she declined to sweep away.
- The bedsheets had clearly not been washed so we started our vacation doing laundry.
- Every single kitchen utensil was dirty. All of the non-stick pots and pans were scratched and peeling so badly and everyone knows how poisonous that material is when it is getting into your food. We had to buy our own pots and pans just to be able to cook.
- The soap dispenser on the dishwasher was not popping open during the cycle, therefore all the dishes and kitchenware had not been cleaned properly in ??? weeks/months! I fixed the dishwasher myself.
- The air conditioning is virtually non-existent. I advised the owner and property contact of this and all they did was change a filter 2 days later. This did not correct the problem.
- The house rules state not to leave anything in the refrigerator when you leave, which we did not, but THE OWNERS DID WHEN THEY WERE THERE THE WEEK PRIOR! This was disgusting. We had to place all of their opened/used foods into a shopping bag and relocate to the fridge in the garage.
- THEY LEFT THEIR USED BAR SOAP IN THE SHOWER! This is also very disgusting.
- The dining room lights are on a strange dimmer that we did not figure out how to use until the 4th day. We tried asking the owner and property manager for help and received none, therefore we ate in the dark for the 1st 3 days.
- Don't think that you will be able to safely use the canoe if you stay here. The canoe itself is literally falling apart and the life jackets that are provided are ancient and dilapidated. Definitely not safe to use.
- Just for the simple fact that the bed sheets had not been washed and there was nobody to answer an email or a phone call, I would never recommend this place for your hard earned vacation.
We loved the lake cabin. It was perfect for the vacation we wanted, which was peace and quiet. With only a few other cabins around and even less people, we hardly saw another person. We had the lake almost entirely to ourselves. The water was perfect for swimming and recreation. We followed the directions up to a waterfall and had a wonderful adventure. We took our 4 kids ages 7-16. I felt they were safe and they had so much fun exploring. We all had plenty of room in the house and room for a couple more if we would have wished. The house is stocked with everything and anything you could need. The owners really are generous with the amount of items to which we had access, to include: binoculars, telescope, canoes, life jackets, firewood, fire pit,
bug spray, laundry soap, spices, books on the area, games, child safety items and all the kitchen luxuries you could ever need. The beds upstairs were very nice. My teenagers mentioned that downstairs the sheets could use an upgrade. But it was all very clean.
The location is very remote. We only spent one day away from the house in a week. Make sure you have your supplies before arrival. Its very far to everything. But it was perfect because we didn't want our kids asking us to run out to ice cream or shopping or movies! There is no cell phone service, and make sure you get the wifi code as soon as you arrive.
Cons: The kitchen was primarily clean, but could use a deep cleaning and organization. Perhaps a case of "when the cats away the mice will play"? The house keeper has a big job there. Drawers were crumby and things were not in order. Also, the hot tub was not set up for use. The downstairs porch area where it is located was not very inviting as it was messy and dirty. a guest might want to call ahead if they knew they wanted to use those areas. Its just something to note for those who might need ultimate cleanliness and organization. We are pretty relaxed. I felt the great rental price and cleaning fee made up for the imperfections.
In summary, we want to come back next year! It was so relaxing and serene!
We enjoyed our stay. Beautiful home on Lake Appalachia. The only negative is that civilization is a long ways off....it is a 40 minute drive to Murphy to a restaurant. Other than that the lake is beautiful and it is quiet and isolated...Homeowners were easy to work with and honest.
Our house is on Apalachia Lake, a TVA reservoir that is 10 miles long and has 31 miles of shoreline. It is a remote lake with no marina or commercial development and is almost completely surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest. It remains at full pool year around. Our small gated neighborhood has only 10 widely scattered homes and offers the utmost in quiet and privacy. We are 1/2 mile from a paved road.
We consider our home to be in the middle of incredible outdoor opportunities.
The entire area is rich in outdoor recreational opportunities. Not only do we enjoy swimming, fishing, boating (canoe, kayak, motorized craft), on the lake, we are also very near whitewater paddling and rafting venues such as the Ocoee, Hiwassee, Tellico, & Nantahala Rivers. Trail heads to John Muir, Benton MacKaye, and Appalacian Trails are close by as well as many designated trails in the National Forests. Scenic drives include Ocoee Scenic Byway, Cherohala Skyway, Mountain Waters Scenic Byway, and miles of backroads to explore.
We are two hours from Atlanta, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Ashville and there are an abundance of charming mountain towns and villages to browse in. There are three scenic railroads within a hours drive and Great Smoky Mountains National Park is just over an hour away.
